Late embarkation ?

One alternative is to simply drop your bags off and then explore the area.  Return to the ship later and check-in will likely be much less crowded.

I've not done this, but I've heard from others who have done exactly that at the NY cruise port and visited the USS Intrepid next to the port before even checking in.

Is there a reason you want to do this? As others have said, just drop your bags off, check in and get your card, but just don't get on.

We did exactly that in Seattle. Stayed at the hotel across the street the night before, dropped our bags off and checked in at 9:30am, but then left the terminal building with cards in hand to go wander Seattle.

Came back around 1:30pm and walked right to security, then right through everything else and onto the ship.

We each normally have a carryon bag that would be cumbersome to carry for several hours so by boarding the ship we can ditch the carryon bags in our cabin and the go ashore unencumbered. Our carryon bags contain items such as electronics and medications that we do not wish to put in our checked bags.

In that vein of thought though not sure how much it would help you. If you board as soon as possible at say 11am, your room may not be ready until 1pm, and if all aboard is 3pm... is it worth it?

There are ports such as San Juan where you can board at a typical  time but sail away time isn't until the evening, sometimes as late as 8 or 8:30 pm.
