Closet Light Hack

Nothing like a manual switch for the light on the Caribbean Princess.  I tried every switch and nothing helped.

I carry a little travel tool kit, part of which is duct tape if it moves and shouldn't and WD40 if it's supposed to move but doesn't.  I recently added some painter's tape wrapped around my small Sharpie.

If you don't like the motion sensor on the nightstand, a rolled up pool towel will take care of those if you don't feel like crawling on the floor to cover the sensor.

I just move the throw pillows from the bed to in front of the nightstands each night. Blocks the light and sensor and is a perfect fit.

Then throw it back onto the bed in the morning.

How about Royal? Does it have the same lights?

We are on the Royal right now and yes, they have the same lights in the hallway.  Fortunately, they are not as bright as the ones on the Ruby.  Unfortunately, the painters tape is not working.  But, we tape an opaque paper bag over the entire light and it does the trick!  We just take it down during the day and resecure it at night.

Sorry, I'm about to sound like a sourpuss.  I doubt Princess came up with that idea without prompting.  One too many frivolous lawsuits from people who couldn't manage to operate a light switch.

Another sourpuss here. The light actually works well for my husband who is cognitively disabled and legally blind. He can have difficulty finding the bathroom, let alone a light switch, in a regular balcony stateroom, especially at night. Personally I sleep with my eyes closed, so I never noticed if it is turning on and off throughout the night. Glad the rest of you have figured out a workaround.

Yes it does.  Our mini-suite had a really bright closet hall light that was bright enough to wake someone asleep on the bed, plus 3 under-nightstand/desk lights that would come on if you, for example, stuck your foot outside the covers.

I didn't notice the sensor but taped a brochure over the light, which let it still work but not bright enough to bother anyone.  The sensor tape is probably a better idea.  For the nightstands, a rolled T-shirt or towel works, just jam it under there.  I left the one on the desk alone, it didn't bother us at night because no one walked over there.

There were no switches for any of them.  So if you're sailing on the Royal, bring tape.

An additional word of caution - stick with tape over the sensor and don't complain about it.  I mentioned how annoying the light is to the hotel director at the Captains Circle party.  The next day a crew member with a step ladder came and "fixed" it by removing my painters tape and disconnecting the light all together.  That took care of the light coming on when it's not needed but also meant I couldn't turn it on my when I did need it to see in the closet.

I reached up, pulled the fixture down and reconnected the power ( simple plug in ) and recovered the sensor with painters tape.

The light stays off and I can turn it on when I need to by just reaching up and tweaking the tape.

Wouldn't it just be easier to not "improve" the closet light and leave it on a wall switch?

Maybe I should find that hotel director and complain about the cigarette smoke migrating from the casino into the Piazza and see if he gets right on that.
