Greenwich to London

Hi all,

Where specifically does a cruise line, specifically Viking, dock in Greenwich? I have looked all along the Thames on Google Earth Pro and can't find any dock or terminal. I'm trying to plan on getting from the ship to the British Museum. Does the Underground go out that far? Can anyone provide the best way to go about getting from the ship in Greenwich to the British Museum?

Viking does not dock.  They anchor off Greenwich, and you take a tender to/from the ship from where the Thames River ships dock (which is right by the Cutty Sark).

You can take a tube (slightly arduous) to downtown London/British Museum.  We took an Uber from Kensington (much farther than British Museum) and it was very reasonable and quick.

You can also take a Thames River cruise down towards Westminster and take the tube from there.

The most fun way to get into central London is to hop straight on to a Thames Clipper riverboat, westbound to Embankment Pier. They run every 15-30 mins and take about 40 mins. From there, you can transfer on to the Northern line tube to Tottenham Court Road from where it’s about a 10 minute walk to the British Museum. The boat will take you past many of London’s iconic sites including Tower Bridge, the Tower of London and St Paul’s Cathedral and is well worth the ride.

Alternatively, from Greenwich Pier it’s a short walk to Cutty Sark station where you can catch the DLR (Docklands Light Railway) six stops to Canary Wharf, then transfer on to the new Elizabeth line to Tottenham Court Road. That’s quicker and cheaper but not as interesting.

All of these train and boat options operate under the Transport for London (TfL) ticketing system, and you can pay simply by “touching in” and “touching out” on the yellow card readers with a credit or debit card - you don’t need to buy a paper ticket.

Thank you! This is exactly what we will do 🙂

Here is a picture I took this past summer, showing where the Viking Ship anchors near the Cutty Sark/Greenwich River Cruises docks.

Thanks, I was able to find it on Google Earth in two seconds with that information 🙂

there is a service barge that cruise ships use .... the 'tenders' run from the water taxi / tour boat pier . . .

we had a room in London near parliament and big ben at just took a taxi to this pier area. If the driver has no clue just ask to go to Cutty Sark and there will be signs at the foot entrance showing where they will collect your bags then you head to the water taxi terminal area and will find VIKING reception.

For anyone who sees this and does think about taking the route (which is very efficient but less interesting, as gumshoe958 says), the change from DLR to Elizabeth Line is best done at West India Quay DLR --> Canary Wharf Elizabeth Line. It's a much longer walk if you get off at Canary Wharf DLR.
