veronkia Posted July 22, 2023 #1 Share Posted July 22, 2023 Hi this is our first cruise and looking forward to it. Norwegian Prima 27th August from Southampton to Iceland. We have unfortunately 2 days before we have to leave Iceland so trying to book excursions for the 2 days ie 6th and 7th September. Would like to book a private excursion looking for the northern lights on the 6th. This excursion we're looking at starts at 9pm. We have a question. Can we come back after 12am if the ship is docked for the night? Hope someone can help us with this query. Thanks
Rare BirdTravels Posted July 22, 2023 #2 Share Posted July 22, 2023 (edited) If the ship is docked overnight, the gangway is open 24/7 and you can come and go as you please. Here's a link to my live post from the Prima last year Edited July 22, 2023 by BirdTravels

Thanks I haven't been to Iceland, so I don't know if they have some rules which might prevent it. I have traveled on NCL ships which had overnight stays in several other countries, however. In every case, you could come and go at your leisure at any time after the ship first arrives at the pier up until the "all aboard" call, which usually is 30 minutes before the ship leaves the dock. A member of the security staff is on duty at the gangway 24 hours a day when in port.

Rare www3traveler Posted July 24, 2023 #5 Share Posted July 24, 2023 If the weather is clear, you should be able to the Northern Lights from the ship-- no excursion necessary.
Rare debenson0723 Posted July 24, 2023 #6 Share Posted July 24, 2023 Just so you aren't disappointed, it's not always that easy to see the Northern Lights. We were in Iceland overnight on the Prima back in September and had what sounds like the same tour booked. Were to leave at 9pm and come back at 2am. Luckily for us, our tour contacted us at about 6pm and told us there was no way we would see them that night and they cancelled with a full refund. There were others on our ship with the same tour, different company, and they did not cancel. Of course they spent that time just driving around in the cold and saw nothing. It's really a hit or miss. I do highly recommend a tour to the Southern Coast of Iceland. We were gone 10 hours but it was worth every minute. Check the Iceland port of call board on this forum for more recommendations.
