14 days in western europe

Need suggestions for a 14 day road trip between Amsterdam and Southampton with a rental car.

First, have you confirmed with your rental car provider that one-way rentals from NL to UK are allowed?

 

SIXT will do it, but I just checked some random dates and they want nearly $400 a day.

I was thinking about spending a few days visit interesting near by towns then turning car into same place it was rented after learning there are fee's for turning car into a different local rental site. Then ride train towards Southampton and stoping and renting another car etc.

You mean contactless (tap in, tap out)?
 

In The Netherlands, yes. In the UK, only in the London area.

The drop fee on a rental car from mainland Europe (left hand drive) into the UK (right hand drive) will be at least £500, probably a lot more.  The car cannot be rented in the UK, no UK customer will accept a car with the steering wheel on the wrong side, so the rental company has to pay to repatriate it. Not recommended

What you may wish to do is make a loop road trip and take the eurostar train from Amsterdam to london, then onward to Southampton

You are probably going to have to flesh this out a bit to get meaningful help! A key part of that plan will be how you intend to get from continental Europe to the United Kingdom - your options are flying, various ferry services or the Eurostar train from Brussels, Paris or Lille. 

Depending on what you want to see, you may be better sticking to trains and not renting cars (and there MAY be rover tickets that make sense, rather than individual tickets for each trip), but impossible to generalise.
