mtd716 Posted August 21, 2023 #1 Share Posted August 21, 2023 This may be an unusual question, but what is the correct pronunciation of Koningsdam? I’ve heard the ‘o’ pronounced different ways on various YouTube videos, and I want to know what is accurate. Is the ‘o’ a long (cone) or short (con) vowel sound? It seems trivial, but I would really hate to show up for our cruise next summer and discover that I’d been pronouncing it wrong in my head all this time. Thanks!
luv2cruisenz Posted August 21, 2023 #2 Share Posted August 21, 2023 (edited) My DH who is Dutch, pronounces it as the long ‘o’ like cone. Edited August 21, 2023 by luv2cruisenz
ConanD Posted August 21, 2023 #3 Share Posted August 21, 2023 Since it's a dutch word, it's pronounced with a long o like cone (or co-pilot) Wikimedia has a pronounciation soundfile here as well 🙂https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/48/Nl-koning.ogg

badtwin Posted August 21, 2023 #9 Share Posted August 21, 2023 Reminds me of the time we went for a cruise on the Magellan (which was then with now defunct CMV.) We assumed it was pronounced muh-JEL-uhn. We soon learned the correct or at least British pronunciation was muh-GEL-uhn (with a hard -G-).
Ineke Posted August 21, 2023 #10 Share Posted August 21, 2023 Proper pronunciation: Ko- long o as in go - nings- pronounced as written- dum, as in thumb. Emphasis on the first syllable.
