Only visited Salisbury cathedral once, having read Edward Rutherfurd's Sarum years prior and it was a half day spent in wonder, helped by the organist having a 'bit of a practise'! I can thoroughly recommend it as a day out if docked in Southampton or spending a few days there pre/post embarkation.

There are regularly trains from Southampton to Salisbury- strike dependant.( 30 mins ) It’s about a 20 walk from the station avoiding the town centre. Plenty of places to eat including Cathedral nearby. An easily doable excursion for the day.

I love the first glimpse of Salisbury cathedral from the A338. Ignore the houses and that is the same view that people have seen for many centuries.

And it was gorgeous when she finally emerged from the scaffolding.
