sea mom Posted November 16, 2023 #1 Share Posted November 16, 2023 Can anyone recommend a private tour guide to see the Amalfi Coast when we dock in Naples. Thank you

euro cruiser Posted November 16, 2023 #3 Share Posted November 16, 2023 Just to be precise, you are hiring a car service, not a guide. The many companies that cater to the cruise business, including the one noted above, hire English speaking drivers who will offer a running commentary, but they are not guides. They cannot leave the car and escort you anywhere historic, but there isn't much/any of that along the Amalfi coast anyway, so no loss.
Rare Over from NZ Posted November 20, 2023 #4 Share Posted November 20, 2023 We've used this company half a dozen times (2018 and 2023) and they've been great - - https://italytoursharing.com/ports/naples-port

mar214 Posted November 22, 2023 #6 Share Posted November 22, 2023 We wanted to spend our day in the Amalfi Coast with a tour company that would work with us on a personal level. We found exactly what we wanted with Carmine's. We reached out to several tour companies - Carmine's Classic Amalfi Coast Excursion. was the only one to respond quickly and asked us questions so that the day would meet our expectations. Echo was our tour guide and within 10 minutes of chatting with her, we knew were in excellent hands. Echo worked around several road closures and surprised us with a visit to Pasticceria Sal de Riso in Minori, where Stanley Tucci had that AMAZING Delizia al Limone on his CNN's "Searching for Italy"!! We also visited beautiful Amalfi and Positano. Echo knew where all the best look-out points were - our pictures are breathtaking. We were returned to the cruise port in plenty of time. Our day was perfect and we treasure our pictures and memories of our visit to the Amalfi Coast. https://www.carminesamalficoast.com/en/ 1
smokeykat Posted November 23, 2023 #7 Share Posted November 23, 2023 I was looking at this tour. How much was it per person? I don't see any prices listed on their web site. Thanks
mar214 Posted November 25, 2023 #8 Share Posted November 25, 2023 We paid 350 euros for our day with Carmine's. Some of the other quotes we received for similar approx. 8 hour tours were 400 euros. These were private tours for the two of us. Don't forget to figure in the tip for your tour guide.

I'm feeling a tad pedantic here but I feel compelled to point out two things; one, this is a driver, not a guide; and two, tipping is generally not done in Italy. euro cruiser Posted December 1, 2023 #11 Share Posted December 1, 2023 I'm truly NOT picking on Mar214 but since I already admitted to being pedantic I might as well continue/explain my point. A guide in Italy is an educated professional. Calling a driver a guide is somewhat like calling an orderly in the hospital a doctor. The orderly does have to meet minimum requirements for his/her job but that does not entitle them to the professional designation of doctor any more than a driving license entitles a car service operator in Italy to the title of guide. (Feeling protective of the highly educated, hard working guides I've hired over the years.)
mar214 Posted December 1, 2023 #12 Share Posted December 1, 2023 Our "guide" was very knowledgeable about the entire area and throughout our day, pointed all so many points of interest and also gave us the history. We were very happy with all the information. Although we thoroughly researched the area before our trip, we learned many new things. We appreciate the talents of these experienced individuals and tip because we feel they truly deserve it. Some may say tipping is not necessary in Europe, we tip when it is earned. We wouldn't have changed a thing about our day on the Amalfi Coast - it was absolutely perfect.
mar214 Posted December 1, 2023 #13 Share Posted December 1, 2023 We have been to Europe many times and are well aware of the tipping customs there. To each his own - tip or don't tip. Up to you.

And by the sounds of the tipping story going on.. doesn't seem that cost bothers American's anyhow!! lol!! The one's we've done specifically from Naples were - "50 shades of lemon" and "Pompeii with guide/Amalfi/Positano". They were great.
