My initial concern is a low medical coverage of $50K and no waiver of pre-existing conditions for you or for family members not traveling with you.

Allianz is also $50,000 medical. And I am only insuring the 2 travelers. Not sure I understand.

I used Allianz recently. My medical was $50K (I used $3K). Though - my medical  repatriation was $1 Million. They were supportive of me going home for medical care (as opposed to where I was). While my injury was not life threatening - the company they hired to transport me home had several private planes, etc.... In my situation, they flew me home Business Class with a Medical escort.

I learned a lot from my situation and if I can, I will always choose to return home for medical treatment. I realize this is not always possible.

A lot of plans have $50k in medical. An improvement from some plans with $10K or $20K.

Sorry - never heard of Aegis.

If you feel $50K fits your needs, then by all means do what you feel comfortable with. Myself? I always go with a minimum of $100K coverage.

Regarding the "And I'm only insuring the 2 travelers." Yes and No. You're also insuring that if a non-traveling family member (parent, grandparent, sibling, aunt, uncle, child) should get ill or pass and caused you to cancel or terminate your travels, you would have coverage. But with this policy, if the underlying cause of their illness or passing was due to a pre-existing condition, there would be no coverage.

$50K would probably fit my needs. I only need the insurance to cover what my work insurance doesn't cover. My out of pocket, out of network employer provided insurance is $6400. So $50K is enough.

Though what I realized when speaking with someone who was a medical paramedic escort who escorted me home was that it is medical evacuation that is very important. Allianz has $1 million. In many cases, most people want to be transported home for their medical procedures. The company this paramedic works for has several planes that are medically equipped to pick up passengers and fly them home (with appropriate medical personnel of all levels). Because mine was a wrist, we flew commercial, business class.

Something to keep in mind is when/whether the insurer will actually fly you *home* or just take you to some facility that is "adequate".

Now, in your case, I'm guessing there was another factor:  IF they got you home, then *your* health insurance would cover the actual medical/surgical care.  If they did not, then *they* would have the privilege of paying for all of that care...

Anyway, if one looks at the actual policy, it usually shows something like transporting you to a "suitable" (or similar wording) facility for the care needed.

And what WE consider "suitable" may not be what the insurer or the local medical team considers suitable (or "satisfactory" or whatever terms are used) !!

WE would want to come back to *our* hospital and *our* medical team, all of whom are familiar with the "peculiarities" of each of our medical situations, etc.  That may NOT fit what the insurer or local medical team considers at all necessary.

So we get MedJetAssist.  They will fly you to *your* choice of hospital (in the USA, I think, for USA-based members) at YOUR request, assuming you are stable enough for transport including in a full medivac plane, etc.  AND assuming you are admitted as an INpatient.   NO beancounters are making the decision.  NO local medical staff are put in the possibly awkward situation of needing to declare themselves/their facility unsatisfactory for your medical needs, etc.  Note that this requires that you be at least 150 miles from home.

We've let our membership end because we haven't traveled far since The Before Days, but back then, we got an annual policy.

We came very close to calling MJA once when I was in hospital overseas. As we thought, okay, IS this the time to call MJA...?  Yup, I suddenly started to recover.  That was better, of course!

And then our regular travel insurance stepped in, in addition to all of the to-date costs.  They covered special transportation to get us to that final week of our trip.

Again, we assume that the relative costs had some bearing on the decisions.  Paying for special transportation was going to be a *LOT* less expensive than sending us home business class on last-minute fares, plus reimbursing us for that final week at a 5* lake resort.

Anyway, we have had no complaints with Travel Insured or with TripInsuranceStore's assistance starting with helping us choose the most appropriate policy for our particular needs.

I have bought MedJet Assist in years past (not this year as I wasn't going beyond Canada). Though I had 17 hours to talk with the Paramedic who brought me home. Their company is hired to bring people home from all over (commercial plane, private plane, etc...). I later spoke with my TA who is pretty much a cruise only agent though she does book some tour packages such as Tauck, Sandels, etc... My agent sells Allianz insurance. She indicated that her clients when they are hurt and hospitalized frequently come home for treatment (as opposed to being in a foreign country and receiving full care there) and that her clients rave about Allianz. She said it is rare that her clients have surgery outside of the US.

So that made me wonder if MedJet is actually necessary. I know the wording is "closest hospital" but in my situation - all I said to Allianz was "I want to go home for surgery" and that started the wheels turning. Next day I had flights to approve and flew home the day after (so 2 days after accident).

I have to say the company they hired to provide a medical escort was outstanding. Kudos to Life Support. https://www.lifesupporttransport.com
