Hi.  Sure I spelled that wrong...lol.

4 PPL do not want to go to Rome - been there a number of times.  Any recommendations for great excursions out of this port that do not include rome?

Great excursions in no specific order:

  • Tarquinia
  • Orvieto and Civita di Bagnoregio
  • Ostia Antica
  • Lake Bracciano - Castello Odescalchi - Cerveteri
  • Porto Ercole and Porto Santo Stefano

Wondering about a beach or some place to just relax off the boat.

Civitavecchia actually has beaches of its own with at least one only a very short stroll from the port.  Find locations and descriptions  of type of beach and the availability of umbrellas, chairs etc online.

Not sure we would want to spend any time on the Civitavecchia beach.  However, there are some decent beach towns closer to FCO, that are easy day trips from the port for folks that simply rent a car.  Beach towns like Fiumcino have not only the beach and sand, but also lots of decent restaurants.  The downside is that the decent beaches in the region are very popular with the Italians from the Rome area, and can be very crowded on a hot summer day.

We used Rome cabs to do a private tour of Odescalchi Castle, Cerveteri Etruscan site and time for a lovely lunch.

We also rented a car and drove up the coast for a lovely fresh fish lunch and explored some of the countryside including Tuscania.

On another occasion we took the local bus to Tarquinia, where  the Etruscan museum is excellent.

Viterbo and Orvieto are also an interesting spots.
So lots to see and do,  depending on your comfort level.

I second the suggestion to take locus bus to Tarquinia.  Their museum was fabulous. I don't know whether it is still possible or not, but when we went, from the museum you could take another bus to some of the Estruscan tombs. Afterwards we walked back into the old town and had a nice lunch before returning to Civitavecchia.
