Seattle cruise port illegal ubers so be careful

Recommended Posts

current news report about illegal taxis and ubers operating near the ports in Seattle.  You need to prearrange any uber or car service.  Only taxis allow walk ups and if your offered a 'taxi' with no name, no meter and mostly no license you run a good chance of getting ripped off.  Here is the report as an FYI

Seattle drivers clash with independent 'hustlers' for cruise passenger fares (msn.com)

If arriving at Pier 66 any cab is a flat $40-45 to Seatac but pier 91 cabs may or may not offer a 'flat rate' but many do which is ok if its about $55-60.

You do not need to prearrange an Uber-- you can call one in the app when you get there. This is clearly by a trade group trying to defend their turf. You shouldn't accept a solicitation in the parking lot but calling an Uber or Lyft in the app is perfectly legal.

yes of course that is what is proper.  If you read what is happening you call and book and uber and a guy is sitting there and says he is 'your' uber.  When the legit uber shows up your long gone.  Calling or booking on the app on arrival is perfectly fine.

Still doesn't add up. Not sure why anyone would get in a random car when the Uber app clearly shows the license plate, driver name, and type and color of the car you are supposed to be in as well as its exact location.

Just a trade group trying to cause a small panic for their own gain.

This news story really isn't about Taxis or Ubers, but the XL Black SUV's (Livery Drivers) that are independent drivers, not professionally registered, so there is no official oversight of them.

These independent drivers will show up at Pier 91 and call out to passengers waiting for their Town Car / SUV driver.  Disembarking passengers can be enticed by a low price fare and a instantly available ride  to SeaTac Airport, and  and will accept the offer (and thus leaving their reserved ride in the lurch).  These folks need to be careful as the promised low fare may change once they arrive at the airport.  So buyer beware.

The transportation workers are always trying to move along these drivers, because they just park and try to solicit riders.  It's annoying, and not allowed, and the Pier is trying to do something about it (although it's not an easy fix without more staff to shoo off these drivers).
