No, you need an internet connection.

No. But it has been possible to use iMessage without logging in to use minutes. It has been a loophole and it is possible that loophole has been closed recently. (My daughter could use it a few weeks ago on Escape but someone else reported from another ship it wasn't working)

I have found WhatsApp does not work, but iMessage (no photos or videos) does whether or not you have the package.

on my devices i noticed notifications from whatsappp, email and other app still work fine without being logged into the internet. If i try to use those apps without internet, the apps never works. I need to log into the internet to use to see the actual message and send messages
