On board currency?

We are sailing on MSC Preziosa and Euribia in Norway in September this year. We would like to know what currency is preferred? ( I know it is preferred cashless).

Welcome to Cruise Critic!

Please be more specific to your question.

Your title states "Onboard Currency" so are you asking can you pay for things in cash onboard the ship?

Ships are generally cashless and all charges go to your stateroom account and you settle them at debarkation with a credit card, or you may be able to pay in cash your final account...

Or are you asking what currency the ship(s) operate in those regions?

Hi, & welcome to Cruise Critic

MSC's currency throughout Europe is the Euro.

You don't need to get any Euros, the ship is cashless (even the casino), you charge your purchases to your cruise card and that's settled by your credit card which you registered on-line or at registration at the cruise terminal.

NB Since your home currency isn't the same as ship's, most cruise lines offer to convert your charge to AUD "for your convenience" 🙄DECLINE that kind offer, leave it in Euros, and your card issuer will convert to AUD at a much better exchange rate. Card issuers convert at, or marginally above, the wholesale rate whereas ships - like exchange bureaux - gouge you on exchange rates.

If your cruise is only to Norway the currency is Norwegian Kroner - not to be confused with Danish or Swedish Kroner. But everywhere in Norway accepts Visa or Mastercard cards (don't rely on Diner's or Amex), whereas most places don't accept cash. I always take a little local shrapnel abroad, in Norway I struggled to get rid of it.

For any other European countries on your cruise / vacation it's wise to have some local jingle, but plastic is widely accepted even for small purchases like a beer or a coffee. Same advice - don't let 'em convert to the currency of your card, some are even more greedy than cruise lines. Check the screen before accepting & insist that they charge in local currency. That way, as well as getting the card issuer's exchange rate instead of a rip-off rate, you can see whether the charge is the same as the menu, price board, sale sticker etc.

If you don't already have a card which doesn't charge for foreign exchange, get one to use on this trip- it'll be well-worthwhile. Your countrymen can suggest suitable cards - ask them on https://boards.cruisecritic.com/forum/564-australia-new-zealand-cruisers/ and / or https://boards.cruisecritic.com/forum/48-australia-amp-new-zealand/

Hi

on board, only cruise card.

You must give a credit card, debit card or prepaid in cash.

In case of credit card, they will "block" 250 euro and they will release 20 days after cruise

In case of debit card or cash, you have to pay 250 euro and adjust final bill in last night.

Currency

- America (North America, Caribe and Brazil) but not departing from Antilles: US DOLLAR

- South Africa: US DOLLAR

other cruises: Anywhere in Europe (Norway included), Antilles, Red Sea.... EURO

Japan, I do not know

Grand voyages, depending of starting currency. This is. Europe to America in Euro, America to Europe in Dollar

Certain round trip cruises from UK will use British pounds on board, typically to Canary Isles and back.

The casinos are't cashless, you can bring cash and pay with it, and leave it on deposit with the casino.

You can have a separate casino account, distinct from the cabin account, (saves awkward questions from spouses and churn on the cabin account.)  Also for larger sums you can transfer from your bank direct to your casino account with MSC.

MSC currency conversion rates are appalling, so always bring or transfer in the appropriate on ship currency.

How does MSC handle OBC if you get OBC in USD and then it needs to be converted? I've read that they use a terrible exchange rate.

OBC is given in the currency that the ship is using.  Example: 50 Eur/Usd or 40 Gbp for Voyagers Club when booking at least nine months out.
