Dress code description

I certainly do not pretend to impose my dress code on anyone else. I do believe dressing like a gentleman is an attribute and one I aspire to. Our own dress code reflects our individuality and usually gets the respect it deserves.

Carnival. RCCL. NCL. Celebrity. Princess. HAL. Viking. Oceania. Windstar. P&O. MSC. Ponant. Seaborne. Costa. Ritz Carlton. Many others.

Most on that list aren’t exactly luxury - and some don’t even exist eg Seaborne (yes I know you meant Seabourn 😉) - they’re not lines that discerning luxury cruises would want to patronise

But yes fortunately there are indeed several luxury lines who don’t impose a jacket requirement on men eg Explora Journeys and Regent - and I don’t believe this has bought about the end of humanity or riotous behaviour on those lines - cruising continues along quite nicely on their fleets

I think it’s fair to say the overall industry trend is most definitely towards removing the mandatory requirement to wear a jacket. Silversea has moved a long along way away from their previous requirement to wear a jacket most nights

Anyway I still ask what difference does what one guest wears make to other cruisers?

I gave up on judging books by their covers a long ago

People earn my respect with their behaviour rather than the clothes they choose to wear

Oh good - another dress code thread…

re Ball Caps inside (not in restaurants) - on a ship you go from inside to outside pretty easily in the course of the day - I certainly don’t want to be taking my cap on and off as that happens. There are those of us who wear caps for sun protection - a very sensible measure for those of us who are folically challenged

As for jackets (or an even higher standard) being required all the time - no way - if the dress codes of 15 years ago were still in place I doubt I’d be cruising  so much. Some cruise lines don’t even require jackets at all now - while others have reduced the number of times they are required

Sure if you want to “dress up” - feel free to - wear a tux to breakfast for all I care but why does what I choose to wear make one iota of difference to you - or anyone else?

My comment about ball caps was referring to the evening dress code. I too wear a ball cap during the day for sun protection, but not during dinner or in the bars and theater at night.

I wear a cap whenever I go outside for sun protection as well. When I get home I do take it off.  Since Crystal (old Crystal was the same) asks for no caps I take it off when I enter the ship whether that is coming back from being ashore or from outside the ship.  It's really not a big deal.  On a related note when we are touring and we walk inside a church or a synagogue I do the same thing.

Well, what is "dress up" is a matter of opinion.  The question still stands:  is there a place for a gentleman to get dinner without wearing a jacket (and without ordering room service)?   Perhaps he doesn't ever want to wear a jacket (maybe he doesn't like wearing more than one layer of clothes).

I don't believe Tastes requires a jacket, although you might have wanted one dining there last night. It was seriously chilly!! 😮
