da1425 Posted March 30, 2006 #1 Share Posted March 30, 2006 Hi there, I'm looking at booking a trip for my parents anniversary. I of course, would be going along! We're currently considering Celebrity as the cruise line of choice as Celebrity is (from what I'm to understand) geared more towards folks my parents age (60 - 65). I only have limited experience with cruising, and I have never cruised Celebrity before. I'm currently booked on Carnival next month with my girlfriend. On to my questions! How many formal nights on a 7 night cruise will there be? Am I able to bring beer or booze on the boat in my carry-on or do you have to smuggle it in your suitcase? I know thats what you have to do with Carnival, so I've already got an extra strong suitcase! Do they have any all you can drink plans? I know that both NCL and Carnival don't have this option. What is the nightlife like? I've heard that on Celebrity the party usually dies down around 11pm - midnight...is that accurate? Thanks for all your help! Rare Lois R Posted March 30, 2006 #2 Share Posted March 30, 2006 Welcome to Celebrity:) I will give you some of my opinions.....I am 48 and have sailed X 7 times, #8 is April 13th...so there goes your age thing;) 2 formal nights on 7 night cruise:D Drink plans? You mean for adult beverages? No..but they offer a soda card for carbonated stuff. I have never had a problem with nightlife. Now that is not to say it might be the casino I am in till late. But as for the disco being open till the wee hours...I can't tell you first hand but it probably doesn't stay open as late as Carnival or Royal. If you want to rock away the hours, not sure X is what you are looking for...but as I said, I have never had a problem finding a nice nightlife. And I feel pampered for a week...with fantastic service so I am always happy on X!:D
da1425 Posted March 30, 2006 Author #3 Share Posted March 30, 2006 Thanks for the quick reply! I'm asking about the nightlife for myself and my girlfriend...I don't think my folks will be looking to stay out past midnight!!! But you never know! hdawson Posted March 30, 2006 #4 Share Posted March 30, 2006 Thankfully, no all-you-can-drink plans. Who wants to vacation with alot of out of control drunks? Even Carnival has tried to live down their frat party reputation.
BindarDundat Posted March 30, 2006 #5 Share Posted March 30, 2006 Geez, that's a bit over the top, isn't it, hdawson? The OP gave no indication s/he's an "out of control drunk". Let's try to play nice, now. Bindar

You have picked a good line for your parents and you too, I may add. To answer some of the questions (of course you already have some answers) no drink card, don't we all wish, but if they did I can guarantee the price would be very high. Can you bring booze on? Yes, most of the time. The thing to remember is not to flaunt it or bring too much. We did get busted by Celebrity when we tried to buy out the entire duty free store in San Juan: They took one look at the boxes used for packing booze and made us stop right there. We had a bottle of scotch in the carry on and nothing was said. As for night life, Celebrity isn't known for late night activities. It is geared more to the subdued and the slightly older group. There will be bars open and as mentioned the casino, but by midnight the ship is pretty quiet. Finally formal nights? there will be 2, the second doesn't seem to be quite as formal as the first. Both nights you will see long dresses and tux, but the second night you will see more dark suits and street dresses. NMnita
hdawson Posted March 30, 2006 #7 Share Posted March 30, 2006 BindarDundat. My reponse was meant generally, not specific to the OP. Wonder why so many states have outlawed the practice of bars offering all you can drink plans?
darrencantwait Posted March 30, 2006 #8 Share Posted March 30, 2006 Hi there -- everybody answered most of your other questions. As for Discos, the nights are hit or miss. Also probably depends on your itinerary, length of voyage, time of year, etc. I'm 36, and my partner is 30. There always seemed to be a few people on the dance floor...and on Constellation, they have a White Party masquerade disco one night, and the place was REALLY going that night. You'll have fun. Champagne Posted March 30, 2006 #9 Share Posted March 30, 2006 I'm in my late twenties and have cruised celebrity 4 times. I have never cruised any other cruise line so I don't have a direct comparison, but many of my friends and family have cruised other lines so I have an idea. As for the alcohol, I have never had a problem brining on a couple bottles of wine in my carry on. I make sure to look a little dressy when I board and it never seems to be a problem. However, I have seen them take hard liquor from people. So if you want liquor you probably should sneak that on. As for the night life, I'm sure it won't be anything as wild as Carnival. Here's my breakdown; if you want night life try to book the shortest cruise possible on Celebrity and book when school is out so younger people are cruising. Stay in the Casino or Disco late at night as this is where most of the people are late at night. Go to all the theme things, I think one night they have a pool party with a Congo line and a melon parade. Karaoke seems very popular and this can go late into the night. I would agree that things slow down by 11:30-midnight but if you go to the Disco it can go for another hour or two. Honestly, I think a lot of things will depend on who's on the ship, as with any cruise. I love Celebrity because they have wonderful people working on their ships who provide excellent service. They have great food (mostly French based) and an excellent vegetarian menu. I think many of the passengers are great and have excellent worldly stories and I enjoy many of there activities like Martini tasting and wine tasting. :o
