I agree with largin in that while on the Coral going through the buffet line I cannot begin to tell you how many people I saw not using the hand sanatizers. Unbelievable.

We also used the hand sanitizers on the Caribbean Princess and saw many people passing them by. Even if We just had a cup of Coffee We would take advantage and sanitize our hands. With so many people on a ship, We used it every chance We got. Also We brought our own along too.

Just remember that those hand santizers won't prevent Noro or Norwalk viruses - the only real protection against that is keeping your hands away from your mouth and regular and aggressive hand washing. You can't kill viruses, but you can 'misplace' them by using soap and water. The hand santizers are better than nothing, but they are not a cure-all. And remember, when leaving the bathroom to use your hand towel to open the door. It won't help you to practice good hygiene if the person in front of you is a slob.

P.S. We travel with hand santizers as well.

On the Sun Princess in April, there was an employee stationed at the Horizon Court each morning and afternoon. They would only give you a plate IF you used the sanitizer first. If you didn't, they pointed back to it and many had to go back and use it before entering the buffet line.

IT WAS FANTASITIC!

On the Diamond Princess, Sydney to San Francisco in April, they had hand sanitizers and Princess personnel dispensing it at every eating facility. The Internet Cafe, the library, etc...all had sanitizers. We DID NOT have any breakout of Norovirus, due to the efforts of the crew on the Diamond.:) :) :)

When we were on the Sapphire, the crew member stationed at the front of the line wouldn't give you silverware unless you use the sanitizer. On the Island, it was the honor system and you would see people skip using it. We also brought little travel size bottles of the stuff (even carry it when we go to eat at our local mall).

We use the sanitizers before getting our plates also then when we get to the table we use the purell pocket size that I carry around with me. I figure it doesn't do much good if after I wash my hands I use servers that someone who didn't wash used. Even if it isn't a magic cure, I enjoy my meal more knowing I've done what I can to keep the blech away. Be sure to bring hand lotion, hands tend to get pretty dry using so much sanitizer.

we just completed an alaskan cruise about a week or so ago aboard the sapphire princess, and they had someone stationed at the entrance to the buffet to make sure you were using the sanitizer. overall, i think it's a good idea, but you had to do it everytime you went back in, even to get some salt or something. and that stuff is foul tasting. if i ate anything with my fingers (like a muffin), i could taste it or smell it. i'm good about hand-washing and not touching my face anyway, so i didn't feel the compulsive need to re-sanitize my hands after doing it two minutes prior. like i said, overall, i'm glad they do it, but after a while, i came to loathe it!

After touching those tongs, etc. in the process of picking up my food, I like to use the sanitizers again before eating. I agree the smell on the hands can be quite bad so I use knife and fork to eat everything...no picking up with smelly fingers.

They are wonderful!

I would like to see them at the exit of the rest rooms too - Something like you can't leave without using one.

This is usually the source of much of the problem - on ships, and all public restrooms; many people just simply do not wash their hands properly, if at all after using the facilities.

To bring this to its logical conclusion, since it has been proven there is more bacteria on the faucets in public bathrooms than on the door handles, you would be advised to use a towel to turn the faucet off after washing your hands if the faucet is not an automatic one. I have never seen anyone do this.

It's disappointing that Princess crew members don't push the sanitizing more, on Norwegian Wind they asked everyone to use it entering resteraunts as well as whenever you boarded the ship. I saw one group enter the resteraunt without using it and the hostess caught up with them and asked them to go sanitize their hands. They were embarassed by this, but that's their fault for being so gross in the first place. I was happy they pushed everyone to use it. It was my first cruise and I was hoping other cruise lines would do the same thing.

All the lines, including Princess, are pushing it more and more...especially when there is even a hint of Norovirus activity. :)

On the Sapphire I thought it odd that all the public restroom doors were kept open. Then my husband deduced that it was so no one would have to touch the handles/knobs on the way out! We also noticed the absence of salt and pepper shakers on the tables.

I think this is an excellent idea. I'm a hand sanitizer freak. I have that stuff everywhere. Although I prefer the good ole' soap and water, the HS is great when soap and water is not available.

I sure hope it's on the Grand. One less thing to stuff in my pockets.

On NCL they had the hand sanitizer stations outside of every dining venue, outside of the casino, placed at various stands in the hallway and also before you get back onto the ship after an excursion. Good reminder for everyone to sanitize if you're not going to wash your hands.

Sanitizers are a great adjunct measure when you are already washing your hands both well and frequently, but one must use enough gel to keep the hands wet for at least 60 seconds to be effective for ridding the hands of Norovirus which is difficult to destroy with alcohol based solutions.

As someone mentioned, the hand sanitizers do NOTHING to prevent the Norovirus. It makes me wonder why they seem to really emphasize using it when Norovirus is present. Just a gimmick to make you think they are doing something.

I recently asked a pharmacist if there was anything OTC that you could buy to prevent viruses and was told there wasn't.

I still encourage everyone to use the sanitizers as we do. It just seems like a little "false advertising" or whatever when they try to make you think it will stop viruses.

Norovirus ia a non-enveloped virus and thus much more time is required to destroy them....enveloped viruses and bacteria are more easily destroyed by the alcohol disrupting the envelope. So "Purell" does destroy germs on the hands, but one needs to "wash" vigorously for an extended period with the gel to achieve effective action.

The dispensers on NCL are large, and at the entrance to every buffet & dining room.

On the Crown, there were small bottles like the size you'd buy for your house. Crew members were at the entrance to Horizon Court & Café Caribe the first day or two to enourage people to use the hand-sanitizers. After that, the bottles were simply left standing next to the buffet dishes & silverware. It was up to each passenger if he or she decided to use them.

There were no hand-sanitizers in the entrances to the Crown's dining rooms.
