We are going on the Glory in August too. What date are you sailing? We are going the 26th. You don't have to tip your porter more. Trust me I have given those guys twenty bucks the first time I've seen them and ask them to always have ice. Ya right. The problem is they come in the morning while you are out. They fill the tiny bucket with ice, by the time you get back it's all melted and they are off duty until early evening. So if you want ice, you have to call room service to get it. Then you tip that guy like a buck or two. I always tell them go get me some more, I want a lot. Then that's a two buck tip. You were right about you just can't go get ice. Everything is locked up. To take your drinks to the pool, well you could either take a large cup of say vodka and then go over to the Lido deck, that's where all the foods are and they have drink machines there with ice tea, fruit punch. You could go back and forth between them and pour the vodka in. I don't do the pool so I can't help ya there. But that to me would be the easy. I always bring a bottle or two. Just wrap it in bubble wrap, tape it good, wrap it in a towel and put it in the middle of your suitcase for a cushion. Now if you are going to bring the beer, put it either in a suitcase or the soft sided coolers. Those porters don't care what is in your bag, they just want to see some green in your hand. They say hi, and then they look at what you have in your hand. If you have nothing, then you'll be standing there a while. I also buy the little minis or nips as I call them. I buy them like 99 cents each at Walgreens or sometimes you get two for one. Those you can just chuck in the suitcase. I have them give me the small case of them and then I bubble wrap that and they go. Most of them are plastic bottles. Those are so easy cause you have the right amount. In my soft sided cooler I bring quarts of tonic water, coke, whatever I am going to use for a mix. And I bring a lot of it. In my second cooler I put bottled water for when we go ashore or if I want some in the cabin. Oh and here is my biggest tip of all. Bring a can of Lysol. And carry it with you when your board. Those cabins are not really THAT clean. Those stewards have you out of your room on the last day by 8. Then they have 12 rooms to get ready and the people are all ready coming onboard at 11 as we are still leaving. They call you by floors and colors to go and get off. You put your luggage outside your cabin the night before by midnight and it's gone. So you might want to bring along like a small tote bag to throw your dirty clothes in or any thing like your tooth brush that you kept out. You have to have a change of clothes, unless you want to wear what you had on the night before. So back to the Lysol. I get carried away here. I spray the door knobs, the toilet, the handle where you flush the sink, the shower, THE BED SPREAD, yuk, you know they never wash those suckers. I spray the remote control the light switches. Cause you are on a ship with some people that might not have very good sanitation issues. And that Stewart is basically going to change the sheets, run a vacuum, wipe the seat of the toilet quick, put in new toilet paper and he is gone. So I just don't want to get sick on my cruise. Remember to constantly wash your hands on there. Sometimes outside the Lido deck for the buffet they have hand sanatizers. Like an alcohol. You want to be aware that this is how those Norwalk Virus starts. People just not washing their hands. So now that I've given you a few tips and talked your ear off, just relax, bring your booze, sit on the balcony and watch the magnificent ocean and the sunrise and sunsets. I get up so early and I sit out there and just watch the sun come up it is beautiful. I love the sea.

Not sure what you are talking about tipping the porter for ice? The porter is the one who takes your bags from you before you get on the ship. We always tip our room steward a little extra when we first meet him/her and ask them to fill our collapsable ice chest up with ice, not our ice bucket.

After that we don't see them too often but they always empty out the water in our ice chest and refill it with ice everyday. They go as far as bringing it in out of the sun when it is on the balcony:)

We have never had a problem with dirty cabins. I guess if you have a germ phobia then it would be a could idea to bring lysol. But don't forget that there are germs in the public restrooms on the ship, the elevators, the slot machines, the bar stools.............you get where I'm going ;)

Opps, I meant the stewart not the porter. sorry. I just do have a germ phobia. I don't want to get sick and ruin my cruise. I've been on plently when the virus breaks out. That does tend to make you paranoid. I just prefer not to take the chance. So my can of Lysol goes with me. Lots of people do that. I got the tip off here years ago. I also bring the Clorox wipes. I just do it once and then I'm done. I don't walk around with it. And you are so right about the casino and all the other places, that is why I said, wash your hands. It's all hand to mouth that you get sick. You can pick up those germs on your hands, but once you touch your face near your mouth, that's when you have a problem. Hand washing just keeps you safe and makes sense. When there is an outbreak on the ships, when you go to the Lido you will see the crew serve you. You won't be able to touch the spoons and they wear gloves. It doesn't take long for that to spread thru a contained ship. I prefer not to spend my vacation quarantined in my room with stomach cramps and vomiting. The rooms look clean, but let's face it, they aren't cleaning them that good.

Mamanance, if I didn't no better, by the way you cruise I would think that you were my wife.

And for the posts above that suggested bringing large quantities of vodka on board, just bring enough to get you to 1st port. Absolute Vodka is about $8/ltr in the islands and you can wrap them up in a beach towel and bring it aboard. I have never had a problem doing this.

Everyone, awesome info! glad to hear I'm not the only acloholic around....

So these collapsible coolers, you pack them in your suitcase, or you actually take them on-board as a separate carry-on?

So I guess I can buy some rum on St. Thomas and St. Martin, hide the bottle in my towel, and wala.......

sounds like my s&s account might shrink from 5 pages to 4 now:D

we're going 8/5 on Glory

I bring beer and spirits in my checked baggage and I bring a cooler full of water and/or soda (no ice). (I drink A LOT of water!) I take the water out of the cooler and put the beer in it and have my Cabin God or Goddess keep it filled with ice the whole time... I know what the policy is and I choose to bend the rules. My bar bill is plenty high even though I bring some of my own.

You're my kind of cruiser. LOL. How did you manage to keep the beer cold? Those mini refrig. are not very cold and hell, to get ice is like pulling teeth at times. I have these soft sided collapsible coolers I got at Walmart. They even have wheels. You get them in the camping dept. I put all my sodas, water and whatever in there. You can send them right up with the porters and they always come up to the cabin undamaged. I suppose I could fill them with ice. The best thing is after you are done the cruise, they fold right up like a big square and you chuck them right in your suitcase. So you can bring your mini's and the mix. I bring peanuts, chips and whatever to go with it.

We had not trouble at all keeping it cold on our last cruise. We took a collapsible cooler too, gave the cabin steward about $10 extra the first time we saw him, and asked him to keep ice in the cooler for us. He filled it up twice a day. :)

I agree. I'll have to be sitting down when I see the damages from our bar bill. In fact, I'll need a drink after that!

I guess we need to change the name of this thread to the lush's. Fine by me. You put that cooler in your suitcase when you leave. Naturally. Oh, another tip. Don't bring a portable iron, cause then they will open your luggage. And don't forget to lock your luggage. I remember my first cruise. We were so nervous like we were two pirates. We couldn't wait to see if our suitcases came upstairs. And VIOLA, there they were. I used to drag the little cooler around with me when I boarded, but it is award when it's loaded up. So then I said the hell with it and the porter told me it would go up no sweat. So I just put a luggage tag on it and up it goes. I even back peanuts, chips, whatever the old man likes to munch on when he has a buzz. And we spend plently of money in the bars. Because we post on the LUSH board.:p And maybe I am your wife in another life.

Why in the world would anyone want to bother with lugging around all that alcohol? You're on vacation...you're going to spend money....Relax!

Lugging? Who lugs? Stop at liquor store right before you board the ship, put it in extra rolling suitcase (We pack our clothes that we will be wearing while at hotel in) give to the porter. Easy. No lugging around;)

It took me a couple of days to figure it out (I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer) but Carnival sells a Fosters "oil can" thats 25 oz. for like $5.50 plus the gratuity. Once I figured out the trick I had to do some more 'research' to confirm the theory! Suffice to say, it was the best deal. I woke up in Mexico with a nasty hangover and couldn't remember how I made it back to the room. For a bonus treat I spent the day walking around in Mexico with my mother-in-law and a raging hangover. Nice.

ok, i'm gonna fill a few water bottles with vodka and ginger ale bottles with rum, pack em in my suitcase. at debarkation, should I make sure to give an extra tip to anyone in particular to ensure safe arrival of suitcase with contraband to my room? are the porters at cruise dock the same people who carry the suitcase into my room?

thanks:D

The porters at the dock don't go on the ship as far as I know. I believe they simply move the bags to the "door" of the ship and conveyor them up to the crew members. The crew then drop your bags off at your door.

You'll definitely have to tip the porters when you hand over your bags at the dock or there will be a long and uncomfortable silence with lots of staring.

We have always brought our own, never to excess, and a cooler. We ask the room steward to keep it full of ice and tip them nicely for their help. Have never had an issue. We bring our own Pepsi, Diet Pepsi and water as well. Again, not to excess buy enough to enjoy without breaking the bank. Then the casino and art auctions take all the money we save on our bar bills... :0)

Cool, thanks. I'll for sure tip the porters $1 bag at least, then tip the room steward right off the bat to hopefully ensure ice each day. Also, I assume tipping the bartenders may help with getting "better drinks". Do we have the same waiter all week, or is it different each night?

You will have the same room steward and wait staff for the cruise. We usually give the room steward a tip on the first day when we ask for the ice. Once we had a steward who wasn't that on the ball. I found the room on the floor with the ice machine and got my own each day-just in case. There's a room on every floor.

This has worked well for us. Actually, more people would ask about my Diet Pepsi then anything else. You can only get coke on board.....

We leave in 20 days on the Legend!!!!!

Enjoy

Yes it is so true. Pack your soft sided cooler, put a room tag on it and up it comes. I ALWAYS bring it. I like having sodas in my room if I want one and I bring mix, in qt. plastic bottles, like tonic water or whatever, if you don't want to bring cans. And I like my bottled water, so I bring that. I take two of these coolers. You can just roll up in bubble wrap a bottle of booze, and then wrap it in a towel, put it in the middle of your suitcase and VIOLA up it comes. I always tell the guys on the dock that I have cans in there and they tell me not to worry. They just chuck it on in one of the big containers. The beauty of those coolers is not only can you fold them up and put them in your suit case when you are leaving, but they have wheels and a handle that comes out of the top for rolling. Piece of cake. You can also buy the nips at the liquor store and chuck them in the suitcase. We always bring metal cups with the lids on them. Then it stays cold and I can shut the lid and give it a shake to mix it. Remember, Walmart camping dept. has them. They are like $25 each. They have lasted me forever. I don't know why people get so bent about others posting that we bring booze onboard. Not all of us are rich, and maybe they don't like to drink. And if the ship put a decent price on the drinks it would be a different story. But I still would bring it. The prices of the cruise aren't' cheap. And you figure multiply that by 3,000 passengers and a crew from a third world country that they pay squat to, then I think they are making out just fine. Just my opinion. Of course there are those that will disagree, but to each his own. :p
The thing that kills me is, everyone pays big bucks for a cruise but can't afford to pay for drinks. If you are a gambler or smoker, cut back and save a few bucks for the beverage of your choice.

Most people don't do it to save money. most do it for the convenience ;)
