What "odd" things do you look forward to when cruising?

No I think that the muster drill is part of the cruise experience. I like to take pictures of us in our muster gear.

That was a great first post. You are very lucky kid. You have been on a lot more cruises than most people. But it looks like you have figured that out and are very appreciative that your parents are giving you these wonderful adventures.

I'm definitely thankful. Cruising is my favorite way of traveling, I can't describe how excited I am since I'm going on another cruise on Saturday! Ahh! Kind of off topic, but my friends get annoyed whenever a cruise gets close because I just get so giddy. I'm saving up money to bring a few of said friends with me on a cruise for when I turn 16, and hopefully they'll get to love cruising the same way everybody on here loves it.

Another thing to add to the list...

-The excitement a cruiser feels when you board in just a few days!

Muster Drill on Princess is probably more enjoyable than on other lines. Here we sit in lounges, or, theaters, no standing around on deck.:)

Last year on Celebrity we also got to skip the deck and lounged in the casino. Was much more enjoyable than standing all bunched together on on the deck.

Oh my you aren't even 16 yet????

Yep, I am there, the week after you, but to Alaska.

Another fun thing is going with someone who is one their first cruise. You get to experience the "first cruise" adventure through their eyes. Just remind those friends on their giddy excitement when they are going to go on a cruise. I think that the second cruise is even better than the first because you know what to look forward to such as the sailaway party or the dining experience.

So much!

  • first sight of the ship - although I suspect that nothing will match our first glimpse of our first ship (Emerald Princess) approached 'round a corner' by water taxi in Venice, it was a positively surreal experience.
  • walking on board while pretending to be oh-so-sophisticated and 'cool' - while in reality jumping up and down inside!
  • seeing our cabin for the first time and exploring its nooks and crannies
  • meeting our steward and knowing that he / she will be looking after us for the whole time, and that I won't have to do more than a little tidying (you have no idea how untidy my family are, but this time it's just DH so it will be easier)
  • sailaway - although, again, it will be hard to match the sailaway from Venice - with a glass of champagne in hand.
  • taking a zillion photos, on board and on land
  • all those decisions about what to do and what to eat - and then realising that it doesn't really matter what I decide, it'll all be wonderful
  • I'm with the 'bong' of the S&S card, but less keen on the chime before the (sometimes intrusive) announcements
  • meeting lots of folks, many wonderful and a few a bit strange - all make up life's great tapestry ...
  • actually managing to leave shore cares behind, not sure how this works, but even things which have been bothering me greatly seem in another world, so not worth worrying about for the duration
  • standing on our balcony, looking out at the vast ocean, and giving thanks for how lucky I am.

We look forward to many odd things !

Watching the last minute arrivals trying to get on as they are pulling up the gang plank , whether it be the day we leave or from a port . watching the runners is always one !

The Honeymoon show is always a Blast ... especially when you have newlyweds and the couple who has been married for 50 plus years .

The muster drill I can go either way on , I know it is required , however do you really think it would be that organized if the ship where sinking .. lol .. sorry but you know it is true !

Formal Night is always enjoyable , We always Dress to Impress ! and it is always a event watching people

The list could go on and on ... I will say thou , it was nice on one of our past cruises ( RCCL Adventure of The Sea ) we would go down for early breakfast every now and then .. and the Captain and the First Officer would be having Breakfast in the Windjammer Cafe ... sitting all the way in the back ... so a few mornings we got to have breakfast with them and just talk ... not 50 Questions ... just talk !

So I will end with ... what may seem odd to some / is a adventure to others ! and just when you think it can't get any odder ... just come back here and read some new post ! ! ! :D

This might sound odd, but I really look forward to my new issue of Cruise Compass appearing magically in my stateroom every night after dinner. I enjoy planning the next day's activities and marveling at the countless choices of things to see, do, eat, buy, play, drink, win, learn, hear, laugh at, sing along with, share, try, dance to, participate in, enjoy, and experience in ONE day, let alone several! I like to turn the "porch light" on and read it on the balcony before going to bed, or some nights I'll read it in bed by the soft reading light while my partner snoozes nearby.

We're set sail in exactly one month. I was thinking about it today and one thing that I'm really looking forward to is---chilled soups. Silly, huh? But, I just love them and never get them anywhere else. Yum!

Me, too! And sometimes, if there's an interesting appetizer or salad, I'll have the chilled soup for dessert rather than something heavy.

Seeing DHs face as he checks out the cabin and balcony. He has Rheumatoid arthritis and is in constant pain, but still works hard for us and although I can see the pain on his face he never complains. Our one vice in life is our cruises and for him to know he has at least ten days of luxury and rest ahead of him is a joy. The cruise really starts when he has had his first beer in the warm sunshine and turns to me and says "This is the life eh babe?" and winks. Even though we are both approaching 60 and have been married almost 40 years it still makes my heart flutter. ;)

you are a very caring wife--your husban is a lucky man

I love the ding-dong followed by the intercom as well!

I love the moment when you are standing up next to the immense ship looking up and wondering, "how on earth does this thing float?". come on. everyone thinks it!

So many things come to mind on this one.

Arriving at the port and seeing the ship that willl be our hotel/transportation/restaurant for the duration

The first morning at sea with hot coffee on the balcony with my wife

Exploring the ship on boarding day

Watching new cigar smokers while I enjoy my own and offering a light with my butane lighter and sharing stories

that first double dessert in the dining room(yummy)

Seeing my wife on first formal night(yummy)

No matter how bad things may get the sea always makes them better:D

That is a great list of favorite things. You obviously love your wife - and my list is very similar to yours! ;) Thanks!

You're right, John... we were thrilled when we sailed Freedom of the Seas last March we found that the muster was much more palatable since it was held in the dining room, lounges, etc. And, no life vest to bang against others!! :D

I've been google-searching that chime sound. Can you share where you found yours? I didn't find anything like it on iTunes. I found one on a website, too.

If you haven't found it yet I downloaded this one from PhoneZoo... oops, it won't let me post the file. Find "RoyalCaribbeanPa3" at http://www.PhoneZoo.com or search Cruise Ship and you will find it. Sorry I couldn't post the file!:rolleyes:

I love the moment on the first night on board when you switch of the cabin lights, and the room suddenly goes jet black. You climb into the cold and comforting covers, thinking you aren't going to be able to sleep due to all your excitement, but fall into a deep sleep as the ship gently rocks you.

One word: Awesome.

Booing the competition...if I see a rival cruise ship, I boo it. I boo them at see. I boo them in port. I boo them when all I can see it as a distance or just its night lights miles away. Yes, I've only been on one cruise, but I booed three ships...one of them, a Carnival ship in St. Thomas and Puerto Rico...twice.

Cup your left hand around the left side of your mouth and boo the heck out of them. :D
