stuNYC Posted September 25, 2006 #1 Share Posted September 25, 2006 I traditionally "send" my wife flowers which are in the cabin when we arrive. I thought I read somewhere that there were flowers in the Suites, I don't want to spend the money on flowers if they are provided. I'd rather give my DW extra money for the slots. What other amenities are provided? By the way, where is the Oak Room on the Noordam and do they sell cigars there. On a separate post I was told that cigar smoking was allowed in the Oak Room If anyone has been on Celebrity in years past,is the Oak Room similar to what Michael's Pub was, which Celebrity has converted to another use
RuthC Posted September 25, 2006 #2 Share Posted September 25, 2006 I don't believe you get flowers in an SS, as it isn't a "suite" with any perks. So send them to your wife---it's such a sweet thing to do. :) I do know where the Oak Room is. It's starboard side as you head into the Crow's Nest. There's also a door to an outside deck that's very attractive. There was comfortable seating there, a lovely view, and shelter from the wind. Also, very few people. :) Have a lovely time on your cruise.
Randyk47 Posted September 25, 2006 #3 Share Posted September 25, 2006 Depends on your definition of "flowers". :) A couple of cruises ago I bought my wife a dozen roses as we typically cruise on our anniversary. After keeping that "tradition" up for the past 3 cruises I kind of figure I'm stuck and she'll get another dozen on our next cruise. As to the cabin flowers...nice but not much there, almost to the point you'd easily forget they were even there in the first place. We're hardly talking something that would pass as an arrangement. So send them to your wife---it's such a sweet thing to do. :) Ruth, does that mean that we WILL get flowers in the SA suite we've booked on the Noordam? We're cruising the day after Joan's birthday, and it's a major birthday, the big #-0. (You didn't really think I'd give the number, did you?) RuthC Posted September 25, 2006 #5 Share Posted September 25, 2006 Joe, I really don't know. I'm a cave dweller and only answered about the SS based on what I've read here. That's why I said "believe". I'm sure someone with experience in the SA's will answer. :o I did know the answer to the Oak Room question as I've sailed the Noordam. Joanandjoe Posted September 25, 2006 #6 Share Posted September 25, 2006 Thanks, Ruth. The Oak Room sounds as if it's a lovely place that neither Joan nor I can visit. Neither of us can take cigar smoke. On the old Horizon, we couldn't stay in the beautiful old Michael's Club even when it was empty. There was always a lingering odor of cigars. Randyk47 Posted September 25, 2006 #7 Share Posted September 25, 2006 Joe - We were in an S on the Volendam, and while nice, the flowers were only slightly better than the SS cabin we had on the Oosterdam. I'd say it was a small arrangement about the size of a medium to small mixing bowl.
jhannah Posted September 25, 2006 #8 Share Posted September 25, 2006 We had a small arrangement of flowers in our SS on the Noordam. Cigars are sold in the onboard shops, but not in the Oak Room itself. The room is used for multiple purposes, and there's no concession area in there. When they stage a cigar smoking "event," they may bring some in ... but since I didn't go I don't know for sure. But the room is very nice, as RuthC said. Very comfortable place to relax. Charliesmom Posted September 25, 2006 #9 Share Posted September 25, 2006 We travel in an SC suite (used to be S) and they give you a tiny arrangement of mums and carnations, nothing much to write home about. Order the flowers for your wife. They will eclipse flowers provided by the ship, if indeed, there are flowers in an SS suite. Have a lovely time on your cruise. WNYCRUISER Posted September 25, 2006 #11 Share Posted September 25, 2006 According to their website, they indicate that they had fresh flowers in all verandah cabins, but I don't recall seeing them. I would err on the side of caution, and order them.
torpeedo Posted September 25, 2006 #12 Share Posted September 25, 2006 I would order them too if you want something romantic to commemorate the occasion. There are flowers in the veranda suites SS but not much, just a nice little touch. We have ordered the long stem roses from HAL before and they were beautiful. They last the entire trip. Ferry Watcher Posted September 25, 2006 #13 Share Posted September 25, 2006 Hi JoanandJoe, I was just on the Westerdam and had our Rewenal of Vows ceremony in the Oak Room. Even though cigar smoking is allowed there, there was no smoke odor at all. This was also true when we stepped in to take a look at various times during our cruise. They must use something really effective to control the smoke odor. Mary
RuthC Posted September 25, 2006 #14 Share Posted September 25, 2006 Oops. :o Well, it's nice to learn that there are flowers in an SS after all---even if they aren't ready for the Rose Parade. But I want to clarify what I meant about the comfortable sitting by the Oak Room---I meant outdoors, not in the room itself. I looked in the room, but didn't enter. I did go outside and found a delightful little spot.
bepsf Posted September 26, 2006 #15 Share Posted September 26, 2006 Yep - Flowers in SS's.... ...like what your mother would recieve from FTD back in the 80's. (send the flowers) ;) I've seen cigars on display in the cabinets of the Oak Room - I sorta thought one would just get a steward to open a cabinet to purchase one for smoking... Nice thing is that the Oak Room has sliding doors that open to the covered Observation Deck and there are very few soft furnishings in the room to gather smoking odors - all leather chairs and wooden floors... stuNYC Posted September 26, 2006 Author #16 Share Posted September 26, 2006 Thanks everyone for the info regarding the flowers and the Oak Room. I think that based on the posting it is unanimous the my DW gets her dozen long stem red roses (her favorite flower). The Oak room sounds great. Now the only question is can I drag my wife out of the casino to go there. She is a slotoholic. She would prefer to go to the casino then even to the show. She can't wait until we leave port so the casino can open In fact, we are going to Atlantic City tomorrow. I always say we make deposits and rarely any withdrawals. If you go thinking that you are going to win, you shouldn't go. If you go with a certain amount of money that you are willing and able to lose, it is entertaining, especially the new video slots. I myself play the penny slots (yes, there are more and more of them while my wife plays the quarter. We definitely will try the dollar slot that someone mentioned on a previous post that appears to be a "winner. Thanks again for your help I am sure that being a HAl newbie that I will have many more question as the cruise gets nearer

Now that you mention that, it does ring a bell. I was in there for an hour when Captain Scott had a bull session for aviators, and there may have been some behind glass. I just don't remember for sure. They say memory is the second thing to go! ;)
AAAAmerican Posted September 26, 2006 #18 Share Posted September 26, 2006 Flowers all over the ships make it seem so normal and alive. :D HAL Leads All Cruise Lines again with this But if your buying flowers aboard remember your not allowed to take them off in the Port of New York etc... USDA ... When we have seen this that a man has bought his wife an exquisite arrangement and they can not take it off ship .. it makes me wonder still why thye dont tell the cruise guests this more especailly waking all the ships guests a couple times on the Noordam IV cruises...
