I am a non smoker and I really dislike the smell of smoke and the way it makes me feel:(. I have been to many resorts that have non smoking rooms. So my first question is for those non smokers out there, Do you typically notice the smell of smoke when you walk into your stateroom? And if you do, is there anything you can do about it? Like talk to your stateroom attendant to get it aired out or something? I imagine this is especially difficult it you have an inside cabin.

 

My second would be, why don't they have specific non smoking staterooms? I can't be the only one who does want to spend a week in a smoke infested room. I guess living in a smoke free town has really spoiled me. Anyone know of any petitions or any way to suggest to the lines themselves to at the very least get non smoking rooms, if not get back the non smoking ships?

 

And no offence to those smokers out there, but you have the right to choose to smoke I would like to have the same right to not have to deal with smoke.

I dont know if i've ever been in a stateroom following a smoker or not.. i've never smelled smoke before.

 

I've seen the stateroom attendants cleaning the rooms on turn-around day and it seems like they do what they can to air out the rooms and clean up sufaces that might hold on to that smell.

 

At worst, if you do end up with a room that has a smell of smoke you can't put up with, I would recommend visiting the Guest Relations Desk and seeing what they can do to either futher clean the room or put you in a different room.

:confused: but didn't you choose to deal with it when you booked the cruise knowing smoking goes on, on a ship?:confused: We chose Carnival over Royal Caribbean because we felt if we were gonna pay this kind of money for our trip, we should be allowed to smoke in the stateroom if we want to. Royal Caribbean doesn't allow smoking in the cabins according to one of the brochures I've read, so we chose Carnival. No offense was taken, and I hope I have not offended you, just wasn't sure if you knew about RC and their policies.

Some cruiselines have non smoking cabins, you didn't tell us what cruiseline you are booked on??

 

And for the record, i have never smelled smoke in my Cabin on any ship.

I have never smelled smoke in the cabins when I entered, however you can smell it in the hallways.

Did you request a non-smoking room?

Friends of ours requested a non-smoking cabin a couple of years ago and when they walked in their cabin the smell of smoke about knocked them over. They ask to have all the bedding changed including mattress, curtains, and all towels removed and replaced with clean ones. She said this helped a lot. No offense to smokers, but for someone who does not smoke the smell is unbearable! If I am in a room that has smoke or had smoke not only can I smell it but I can taste it.

Smoking in the cabins is allowed on Carnival. I don't smoke and I have never even gotten a hint of residue when I entered my cabin. (and as you can tell, we have entered a lot of them)

 

There have been a very few posts that I have read where people did notice an odor of smoker's waste. If that were to happen, I would simply ask the cabin steward to replace ALL the bedding (including comforters) and stream clean the carpets (they dry quickly) plus hit the drapes again with their "magic spray".

 

I also carry a solid (inexpensive) Renuzit air freshner with me for all those old (and/or sudden) odors.

 

I did not realize that RCCL did not allow smoking in their cabins. What about on their balconies?

I'm an occasional smoker. I DID smoke in my RCCL cabin on the Sovereign a few months ago. The ash tray was right there in plain sight when I entered the cabin. So - somebody's gotten some incorrect information.;)

There are a couple of lines that do not allow smoking in the cabins, Disney is one and Oceania, which does not even allow smoking on the balconies.

 

Other than that, there are no non-smoking rooms. We've been lucky, out of 10 cruises so far, only one has had a smoke smell issue and that was because our cabin was next to a chain smoker. It really isn't as much of an issue than you are imagining. I also have to say, out of all the cruiselines we've been on, the one with the most smokers was definitely Carnival.

 

I don't know what they use to get rid of the smell in the cabins, I've read they use ionizing air cleaners and they probably change out the bedding completely if the previous tenants smoked in the cabin. I sure wish the cruise industry would educate the hotel industry in how to eliminate smoke odor, though. Almost every non-smoking hotel room we've ever been in has reeked of smoke, it makes me think even the smokers can't stand the smoking rooms.

 

But, being a former smoker (stopped 18 years ago), I can understand how and why smokers object so strongly to controls. It's hard having everyone in your face about it. However, when I smoked, I did so outside no matter where I was. It would be lovely if smokers stopped to think about what they are doing to the cabins and the neighbors and go up on deck to enjoy their cigarettes. I'm the last person who would ask another to not smoke, I'd rather move away myself than make a comment. I like to be treated with respect and thought of as having some intelligence, so I won't be educating anyone on the hazzards of smoking. They are smart enough to already know.

MSC does not allow smoking in their cabins - if you h ave a balcony you may ask for an ashtray from your steward.

Royal caribbeans no smoking in the cabin--- is that a new policy or something? When did this start?

 

I know Disney does not allow smoking in their cabins.

I just got back from RCCL Empress of the Seas mid November, and I was allowed to smoke in the stateroom.

I read a thingy on here on cruisecritic that said that Disney and Oceana were the only ones to have more strict policies. I was on RCCL when I was much younger and this is my first cruise without my parents. I don't remember the experience at all. The two cruises that we are looking at are Star Princess and NCL Jewel (and after reading Coka's review of Jewel that one is just sounding better and better!).

 

I am from a family of smokers (my mother died 12 years ago tomorrow) so I lived with it for many years. Unfortuantely since I was subjected to second hand smoke for many years I have any health problems as well my boyfriend as asthma, so for people like us it is a very big deal. I would truely prefer to have smoking and non smoking areas, part of the reason I chose to live in a smoke free town. I just wish that I had the money to take a smoke free cruise as well.

 

It has nothing to do with a snob factor, it has everything to do with a health issue and an emotional one that even after 12 years I am still trying to deal with.

 

As for why I chose a cruise when I know that there is smoking prohibited, well I have a right to a vacation too, I would just like to know why more aren't smoke free or smoke limited.

 

Thank you very much for the advice I will keep all that in mind. I just hope it doesn 't smell like smoke cuz I really don't want to have to be a pain in the butt and ask for all that!

I'm a nonsmoker who's quite sensitive to smoke smell, and I've never in my four Carnival cruises smelled smoke in my cabin or in any place that wasn't a designated smoking area on the ship. Maybe I've been lucky, but that's my experience.

 

I have, however, experienced falling cigarette butts from balconies above me. One of them landed in my lap once while I was sitting out on my balcony. Ouch! I really wish people would learn that when you toss a cigarette (or trash or whatever) off of your balcony, it does NOT go into the ocean! :p

Unfortunately these things do not turn around overnight. It will take years. We have seen more restrictions on ships over the years (and hope to see a lot more in the future). Non-smokers are now the majority. The wave will catch up on sea as it has on land. Even other countries are becoming more intolerant of smokers and are enacting laws.

I would not overly worry this. We have always experienced clean rooms. I know how intollerant it can be putting up with a room someone has smoked up. I made a hotel room reservation and forgot to specify non-smoking..:( ... try as much as we could to air it out without success..... we had to spend three nights sleeping in someone else's ashtray. :eek:

I'm not sure if there has been a smoker in the cabin before me.....can't say that I've smelt smoke in the hallways before either! Did a Greek Islands cruise a few years ago and the Ladies across the hall from us smoked in their cabin, could smell the smoke very stronly in the hall.

Royal CAribbean does not have non-smoking cabins and to answer one of the other questions, smoking is permitted on the verandas including cigars and pipes.

Unfortunately the reason is money, all attempts at having smoke free cruise lines or ships have failed. Supply and demand

Our October cruise on RCI's Explorer was spoiled by excessive smoke residue in the stateroom, I call guest relations and they "Refreshed" the room but you could still smell the smoke. I wrote RCI and here's their response:

 

Thank you for your e-mail.

 

Mr. ******, with regard to your inquiry, smoking is permitted in

designated smoking areas in many of our lounges and all open air decks

(exterior).

 

All showrooms and dining rooms are non-smoking.

 

Pipe and cigar smoking is not permitted except on the outer decks or at

designated areas at certain times. This varies from ship to ship on

Royal Caribbean.

 

Guests are permitted to smoke in their staterooms. There are no

non-smoking staterooms.

I was in several staterooms and a suite and didn't notice any smoking smells on my recent cruise. The casino wasn't bad either compared to the ones in AC. I didn't smell smoke in the hallways, except for the wacky weed smell in the hallway when we left Jamaica. That smell was on several decks in various parts of the ship.

I read a lot about the smoking issue, what I do not understand is that having done a few OK quite a few cruises smokers do not cause any real problems. Its not because they are nice people its because there are so few of them, there will be one or two chain smokers and some bloke with a cigar that produces more smoke than the ship.

 

So this being the case why not just ban smoking from all cruse ships on health and safety grounds, the less things that can cause a fire on the ship the better.

 

Now as people spend a lot of time shore they can light up as much as they want until the laws catch up with them..

 

England will ban smoking at work, inside buildings etc next year, Scotland is a head of England and is already looking at banning smoking from parks or play areas where children could be present.

 

Many health boards , universities ban smoking even in car parks and gardens.

 

It is only a matter of time before smoking on cruise ships is banned.

 

My own view as the study in Dundee showed bar works health improved greatly and very quickly when they worked in non smoking bars so for that reason smoking should go.

I emailed Royal Caribbean directly and asked if smoking was allowed in cabins and they replied that you can indeed smoke.

Of all of my cruise experiences, one that still remains at, or near the top was my cruise on the Carnival Paradise. At the time, she was non-smoking from stem to stern and it was so incredible to walk through public areas with no smoke at all. Even crew members were not allowed to smoke anywhere. Anyone caught smoking or with tobacco products were escorted from the ship at the next port of call. All of this ended when the ship was re-deployed to the west coast. I say bring her back the way she was and I'll be back onboard asap.

Being from California, part of where the anit-smoking groundswell started, it was kind of a shock to be in an English restaraunt a year ago and have someone at the next table light up. :eek: Then we remembered we were in England. ;) This year when in Scotland it was interesting seeing the sign (posted below) that greeted us at the airport.

.....It is only a matter of time before smoking on cruise ships is banned.

Again, here in California, they have banned smoking in Calif State prisions. That includes the staff and inmates. At least the staff can go home for a smoke.

 

So I guess the jails are ahead of the cruise ships.
