Outside Balcony Free Upgrades

OK RCCL cruisers...here is the question that I need your expertise on

 

I am considering booking a May 20 Mariner Outside Balcony Cabin.

 

As a Diamond member of RCCl, how many or how much of a free upgrade can I expect to get when booking such a cabin?

 

Is there any way to get an upgrade into a Junior Suite without paying the going rate?

 

Please advise if you have any experience with this and can share to save me a few $$$.

We are Diamond Plus members and have been upgraded once from a D1 balcony to an OS, and our friends, who are also Diamond Plus members were upgraded to a GS. It's not a given for sure -- they have to have two or more suites available to upgrade, which doesn't happen often, and they won't upgrade until three weeks before the cruise. If a Diamond Plus member has more cruises than we have (we have 35) and is in the same category balcony, they will be upgraded first. So, as you can tell, not an easy thing!

Not sure, but I have to say that the Outside Balcony cabins are ever so much better than the Inside Balcony cabins. :)
