ciship Posted April 3, 2007 #26 Share Posted April 3, 2007 In March, our family (yes, we have the teenager too) drove from Toronto for a Norwegian Spirit cruise. Like you, we researched NY hotels and found them to be almost as expensive as our cruise for 3! We stayed in Jersey City at the Doubletree Suites (great hotel, great location...right on the Hudson River, large rooms with King bed and double sofa bed) for the night before the cruise. The PATH (train) station was a short walk away and we were in Manhattan 10 minutes later for $1.50 each. The hotel cost about $250 (Canadian) for the night. The next day we just drove through the Holland tunnel to the Manhattan pier. This summer we're on the QM2 in August and when we priced the Jersey City Doubletree Suites again (for 2 nights this time) the price was going to be $750!! We searched again and found the Sheraton Suites-on-the Hudson (in Weehawken...3 miles from the Doubletree) for nearly half that price. It has a ferry station adjacent to the hotel property and we'll enjoy taking that to get into Manhattan this time. Since we're driving again, we'll just drive to the Brooklyn pier. If you're driving, staying in New Jersey is an excellent option. If you're flying it could be a very expensive ride from there to your pier! Great info!! Thank you for taking the time. I'm checking into it TODAY!!
Budget Queen Posted April 3, 2007 #27 Share Posted April 3, 2007 I like staying in Manhatten since all my activites are there. It's especially convenient to be able to go back and forth to the hotel during the day if needed. I stay at the Super 8. Easy to book/cancel online. Key is to book, then keep checking rates. My last 2 trips did have significant rate drops, including the week between Christmas and New Year's, which ended up being $150/night from orginal booking of $250. The low rates are gone forever in NYC.

Unfortunately, they are showing that they cannot accomodate a family of five. If anyone knows differently, please let me know. We need a hotel that can take all five of us comfortably if anyone has suggestions.
BlueHerons Posted April 3, 2007 #29 Share Posted April 3, 2007 Don't stay in New Jersey. If you are sightseeing in Manhattan, stay in Manhattan. You should be able to find reasonable accommodations from this list. These aren't hotels I'm just throwing out there; I've either stayed in every one of these or had an immediate family member who did. One last thing, if you stay in New Jersey, you'll spend lots of time and money dicking around getting back and forth to your hotel. Try Apple Core Hotel Group (five hotels) http://www.applecorehotels.com/ The Milford Plaza (I've stayed here recently and it is fine) http://www.milfordplaza.com/ The Empire Group (The Travel Inn, The Newton, and Americana are reasonable) http://www.newyorkhotel.com/ The Pod Hotel (formerly The Pickwick Arms) http://www.pickwickarms.com/ The New York Salisbury http://www.nycsalisbury.com/
Budget Queen Posted April 3, 2007 #30 Share Posted April 3, 2007 It is going to be tough finding lodging for 5 in NYC. Most have a max occup of 4. You are correct, the Super 8 only has 1 or 2 beds, max. 4.

The only one in the group that can accommodate five people is the Salisbury. I'm checking in to rates and reviews right now. Thanks for your help!! 80/80 Girl Posted April 12, 2007 #32 Share Posted April 12, 2007 Hey there - was searching the threads 'cuz we're going to go on Crown in November. Too bad we won't be able to sail together again! emrmom Posted April 12, 2007 #33 Share Posted April 12, 2007 My daughter and I stayed at the Salisbury last summer for a week and it was really ideal. It's a little older, but the rooms were clean and comfortable and the morning breakfast room was a nice way to start the day. The staff was really friendly and helpful. We just had a regular room, but they also have suites, even up to two bedrooms. There were a lot of families staying there. It's right across the street from Carnegie Hall and just a couple blocks from Central Park. The subway station is right at the corner. For such a great location, I thought their rates were very reasonable. I'd stay there with my whole family pre-cruise, but they were filled on my dates. Good luck with yours! We will be there POST cruise July 30-Aug 2. Three Adults and two children (14 and 10). Would prefer to be near Central Park area, but really will consider anything that will allow all of us to stay together without costing a fortune. I tried the Salisbury. It was Sold Out. tinlizzy Posted April 14, 2007 #42 Share Posted April 14, 2007 ciship- After much searching I found an apt that sleeps up to 8. 4 bedrooms/3 baths in a high-rise one block up from the LeParker Meridian, one block from "the pond" in Central Park, two blocks from Carnegie Hall. $180-200/night! There are pictures of the apt on-line. Did I mention it has a terrace with views of the city. Look- a view from the window I'm not posting the site. 600 ppl have viewed this thread and it will be gone if I do. Liz
