Best White Pass rail option in Skagway

Which is best, taking the train into Canada and then the bus back a la Chilkoot charters, or the Celebrity shore excursion with the "deluxe" trip to the Summit? Or do you have other ideas. We will be in Skagway on 5/29 on the Summit.

Thanks so much for any input.

These are two different tours. It looks like you are considering the round trip summit option?? This does not get you into the Yukon, if of interest?? If Liarsville, is included, this is a recreated Gold Camp. Usually enjoyed by most, although completely fake. :) Nice salmon bake.

The long Yukon tour, offers more sightseeing and may include the Caribou Crossing stop mentioned above.

Depends what your interests are?? The Yukon trips take up most of the day. There is also plenty to see in Skagway.

Did you take the rail first or the bus? Which do you recommend? We go Aug 15th so I need to book soon. How did you like it. Thanks

I did a WHOLE BUNCH of research on various threads here - decided to book with Chilkoot charters (van one way - train one way) versus through Celebrity for several reasons:

we are only in Skagway from 9:00 am to 4:30 - not really enough time for the "deluxe" trip.....if you book the train through Celebrity - you do not have an option of one-way train, one-way bus - with Chilkoot you do

I found several posters that stated you SEE MUCH MORE if you drive on the Alaskan Highway (via van or bus) one-way - and the train the other - instead of just taking the train both ways....also saw lots of good reviews re: Chilkoot Charters....

We did the Yukon tour with the train up and the bus (really like a mini van) back through Chilkoot tours. The lunch was surprisingly good (and boy do they keep that line moving!) and the trip to Emerald Lake was beautiful. We saw a little black bear from the van. Our tour guide, Sean, was like a California surfer dude relocated to Alaska. Very entertaining.

susanema - I'm glad you enjoyed your excursion in Skagway! We did the same excurson with Chilkoot Charters, and had Larry as our bus driver. We were supposed to be on the longer Carcross rail/bus trip - but had to change plans after the tracks washed out somewhere near Lake Bennett 2 days before our arrival. We thoroughly enjoyed our rail/bus trip, and think very highly of Chilkoot Charters.
