While cruising around the bay today I spotted the Dawn Princess at the China Basin drydock in San Francisco. Anyone know details on what is being done? It is currently up and out of the water.

Probably routine.... have not heard of any problems they need to deal with. I agree with the above poster... would be neat to see pictures of her there.

It's been scheduled for quite a while, routine stuff. Probably new carpeting and bedding etc. Hopefully they finish on time as I sail on her to Alaska next Friday!

We were on the Dawn last month and several of the staff mentioned to us about how they were looking forward to going into wet dock for a week before the Alaska season.

Just a bit of primping for the ship and a few repairs, nothing more.

According to the SF port site, she was scheduled to go into drydock at noon today. I could see her from my office window leave Pier 35 at about 2:00 pm, and my husband, who can see the dry dock from his office window, reported that she had arrived shortly thereafter. So at least things started on time.

Enjoy your cruise!

I will buzz over on saturday and see if I can get a picture to post here. Provided there is no Giants game next door. Don't want to get messed up in that traffic. She does look bigger up in the air though!

I'm jealous of the view of the SF waterfront out your office window!

My window has a view of the shelves in our warehouse :(

I just changed jobs a month ago. Before I was inside where my view was of a cubicle farm. Now I am outside and can see through the Embarcadero Center buildings to the cruise ship pier. I've bookmarked the SF port web site so that I can find out what ship is docked whenever I see one. I am in heaven.

I see you are a neighbor. I live in Walnut Creek. Lived in Concord for several years before that.

So, what is it---dry dock or wet dock? :)

Hate to burst your bubble, but the Giants are playing the Phillies in the afternoon. Maybe you should try Sunday as the Giants don't play until 5PM.

The staff said it was going into wet dock, not dry dock, so that is what I am passing along. Not actually sure what the difference is, maybe someone can explain it that knows the difference?

will post a review within the next few dyas. however, the dry dock stay is to pull up and replace all the carpeting. i herad one staff member say they were going with an orange hue!!! then of course the usual spring cleaning, painting, polishing, changing out old mattresses, and re-doing the casino (changing out machines etc.) contractors came aboard yesterdy and will live on the ship as they do the work. one dining room will be open for meals.

Definitions:

http://www.cruisingcoast2coast.com/glossary.php

Wet Dock - Repairs made without removing the vessel from the water.

Dry Dock - Vessel is completed removed from the water to institute repairs to the keel.

My guess is that it is a Wet Dock.

Thanks Coral, I figured it was definited as 'in the water' or pulled 'out of the water', but wasn't exactly sure.

Yes, I agree, I think the staff was correct on this one that it is a wet dock refurb.

Sure hope they actually do change out those mattresses onboard, they weren't very nice at all.

Sorry for the confusion, when I first saw the Dawn it looked as though it was higher than water level and thought it was up and out of the water, from my vantage point at least. Either way wet or dry, it is not currently moving:D Also, thanks for the heads up about the Giants game. I will stay away from that area at least for today.

I drove by the Dawn yesterday after the Giants game. She's definitely in the water. I thought it was very cool when they showed a live shot of the ship on the Jumbotron during the game.

Got off the Dawn Friday morning at Pier 35, and went to the Giants game that night. As we're walking up the ramp to the upper deck, there's the Dawn on the other side of AT&T Park. Took pictures, of course. I'll post them if I ever figure out how.

What they told us was they were doing general routine maintenance and replacing some of the carpeting.

A dry dock is used to scrape and paint the bottom of the ship and make any mechanical repairs needed to the screws or rudder. Kind of like if you have a sailboat or power boat and need to scrape it to clean off the barnicles, etc. only on a bigger scale. With repainting, the ship moves better through the water.

A wet dock is used to make interior (or exterior above the waterline) repairs that would be disruptive if there were passengers onboard. Princess ships continuously replace carpeting (often done overnight -- I've seen a whole deck done overnight) and the decks and outside are continuously painted so those are not the usual reasons for a wet dock. Refurbishing cabins or dining rooms is a frequent reason for a wet dock as well as replacing deck coverings on the Lido deck, for instance.
