Drive from Skagway to Emerald Lake... have you done it?

Thanks Murray... we figured there'd be lots of pick-up trucks because of the weather and terrain. So, a full size car it will be!

Shereemcg... so you'll be there a day before us. We'll be on the Diamond Princess. What ship will you be sailing on? I gather all the Alaska ports get lots of cruise ships in summer. I hope it will be warm the end of August... at the very least no rain!

Hi,

Can anyone advise if 6 hrs (~2-8pm) is sufficient to drive RT btw. Skagway & Emerald Lake? Our "problem" is that we can't get started on this drive until about 2pm(1:30 at earliest) due to being on tour in the morning. If we're selective about which stops we make along the way, can we make it back to Skagway by say, 7:30-8pm? Our ship departs at 9pm & I don't want to cut it too close.

Btw, we arrive 5/22(7am-9pm) on the Mercury. I already have our car reserved from Avis. Thanks for any tips or advice.

Budget Queen, thanks for your response.

As we make our way to Carcross & E Lake, could you advise which stops are generally regarded as highlights for this route (or your personal favorites)?

Thanks again,

Dave

Yukon or Budget Queen

Do you know anything about P.B. Cruisers?

Avis is not open the week that we arrive in Skagway, May 10. We are thinking of renting from P.B. Cruisers and driving to Emerald Lake, having cinnamon buns, stopping for lunch, and taking tons of photos along the way. It was this or Experience the Yukon. We will have lots more freedom having the car; can eat where we choose and stop whenever we like. Thanks for any input either of you might have.

We just reserved a van from Sourdough for June and I have map of Skagway and it looks like it's about 5 or 6 blocks right off Broadway. I see two docks, Ore Dock and Broadway Dock. There is always a short walk on the pier before hitting the town streets, but 6 blocks shouldn't take long to walk. Ore Dock would be a little further away than Broadway, but doesn't look like much more than a block. I must have requested the city map-attraction guide from www.skagwayinfo.com. That is the web address on the front cover. It's a nice little info book.

All 3 rental places are within a block of each other. I see you'll be at the far end of the Railroad Dock, which would make it a little over half a mile, but there are lots of shuttles (I think they're still $1).

Thanx

Walking is no problem. Hubby and I walk 2-3 miles every night. Just got back from 2mile walk
Thanx for the info. They had emailed me today but did not tell me where they were located. I wanted to go ahead and reply to them and reserve the car(if I knew the location). This seals the deal for us. Rental car/Emerald Lake!!

Hi Bunnybear - take another look at the thread above and you will see a link to a website I posted which has the entire route from Skagway to beyond Emerald Lake mapped out by mile post (km in the Yukon). Very detailed and something you will want to have in the car with you! Enjoy

The downtown shuttle was $1.50 each way last Sept. If needed. All flat walking but if the 3rd ship back on the Railroad dock- it is a haul.

THANKS to you all for the good info. We now have a rental car and I've ordered a book that should arrive soon.

Now, where is MY map to that Cinnamon Roll Shop

(going to use that shuttle)

mooshele - don't take that BellsAlaska guide that you posted as gospel. There are a few mistakes that could cause problems - poor descriptions such as the fact that there are no toilets at Bove Island, wrong business and location names, missing attractions, etc.

Thanks Yukon I guess it is better than nothing and gave us a good idea of what we would be seeing (helped make decision to rent a car!) but is there something you could suggest that might be more accurate which I could get online or find in a book?!?

I'm pretty good with direction (plus it is only one road ) and I have a pretty good 'nose' for finding things and off the track sights (at least it was working in CA, AZ and CO!!) but would hate to miss a 'must-see' especially since we only have one day!!! Thanks again!

After seeing how many mistakes there are in the Bell's guide (the printed version doesn't even mention Carcross!), I decided that it's time to upgrade my own. I'm working on it right now, but the majority of it is done (it will be finished completely tomorrow) - http://www.explorenorth.com/library/roads/sklondike-photos1.html
Rather than an annotated photo album, it's now set up as a mile-by-mile guide, with photos and links to other information for those who really want to go in depth.
