pogieone Posted June 2, 2007 #1 Share Posted June 2, 2007 Parkwest is selling the same artwork at the Richmond CA Costco that they sold on the Noordam 5/20 cruise. Not an auction, but real prices around 50% off their "retail" prices. I didn't have a chance to check where they go from Richmond, but these special Costco sales usually go store to store. That is too funny. I bet they look really cheap at Cosco. Too bad you do not have photos. Also, how do you know they are 50% off. I thought it was an auction on-board (but I guess you can just buy)
localady Posted June 2, 2007 #3 Share Posted June 2, 2007 We had them up here in Roseville a few weeks ago too. :D They were partially crated, and the ambiance wasn't the same as on a ship, but it was the same darned art work!!
Krazy Kruizers Posted June 2, 2007 #4 Share Posted June 2, 2007 Oh Goody. Wonder when I can get one of those "priceless art works" in my area??? Maybe WalMart will soon have them???
Krazy Kruizers Posted June 2, 2007 #5 Share Posted June 2, 2007 Or maybe I will be able to get one at lightone at K-Marts Blue light special?? Of course I can even get one on Tuesdays with an extra 10% off for Senior Citizens.
RetiredMustang Posted June 2, 2007 #6 Share Posted June 2, 2007 This is just beautifully hilarious! I've had sneaking suspicion that at least some of the art on the ships was something you could pick up in a mall, but never thought about Costco! Anyone, if you see them at a Costco near you, please post photos, especially with prices. I want to take the pictures aboard on my next cruise! pogieone Posted June 2, 2007 Author #7 Share Posted June 2, 2007 I'm just estimating from the Retail Price posted on the print compared with the Sale Price on the print. I'll try to get some pix but Costco can be a bit nasty when it comes to taking pix of their items...

hammybee Posted June 3, 2007 #11 Share Posted June 3, 2007 While there, you can book your next cruise and be eligible for Coscto Bucks which can be used to buy Parkwest art, in the store. It just keeps getting better.
cruznon Posted June 3, 2007 #12 Share Posted June 3, 2007 Hmmmm.....Do they clog the aisles of Costco with their art like they do the HAL atriums? (I can just see one of their easles run over by a large shopping cart or a kid on those roller tennies!!!:) I wonder if you can buy a bundle of artalong with the supersized grocery packages of canned goods, pancake flour, and/or cereal? This is soooo funny...premium art...yeah, right.
eh2zed Posted June 3, 2007 #13 Share Posted June 3, 2007 This is simply hilarious. I only hope those high rollers who got the VIP treatment on the 05/02 Black Sea/Egypt that tied up the Crows Nest get a chance to see this thread and how they might have been ripped off. There were 18 skids of art offloaded from the Rotterdam when we got back to Piraeus. We had late disembarkation and I counted them as they were put on a flat bed semi trailer. I couldn't believe the expense they went to in order to get these high rollers to Greece, bring in this much art, HAL commission, etc. Must be extremely lucrative business. Looks good on Park West. sab490 Posted June 3, 2007 #14 Share Posted June 3, 2007 Is it true they took over the entire electronics department for the length of the sale, thereby making it impossible for members to purchase cameras to take pictures to send to Costco corporate with their complaint letters....AND they were not given a store credit for the inconvenience? - Steve
RuthC Posted June 3, 2007 #15 Share Posted June 3, 2007 Next time you're sailing tell the art auctioneer that you saw the same thing at Costco for a lot less. Say it loud enough so that the other passengers hear it. Might put a crimp in sales. ;)
sail7seas Posted June 3, 2007 #16 Share Posted June 3, 2007 Don't be so fast wishing them lower sales figures. ;) The higher their sales, the more stable our fares will be. IF it is true what we have read here from Bruce Muzz........ HAL is making more money from the Art Auctions than Bingo, Casino and Shops combined. Let their cash register ring!!!! DAVLIB007 Posted June 3, 2007 #18 Share Posted June 3, 2007 Costco in Dallas had it last month. There were Picaso, Erte. Strange seeing an original in Costco. Had friends buy a Picaso on Princess last year. Had to have it sent back after a year. could not get authenticity on the piece. paid $16.000. they were not happy. Got their money back and had the fun of bidding on something this high. Got a lot of reebies from the auction.......................
kryos Posted June 3, 2007 #19 Share Posted June 3, 2007 This is just beautifully hilarious! I've had sneaking suspicion that at least some of the art on the ships was something you could pick up in a mall, but never thought about Costco! Understand ... I know beans about art, but ... I would be willing to bet that while Park West probably does have some fine artwork in its inventory, the vast majority of it is nothing but cheap junk that one could buy anywhere for far less than Park West would want for it. It doesn't surprise me that they are selling it at Costco now. They probably have way to much in their inventory and need to thin it out. Rest assured, WalMart will be next. Sails, I could not agree with you more. I appreciate that Parkwest is onboard every HAL cruise and that a percentage of their onboard revenue goes to HAL. The real beauty is that no one is forced to attend an auction or buy anything. And despite how some of us feel, a lot of pax buy a lot of art, at sea. Bless them all and those who flock to gold, by the inch.
sail7seas Posted June 3, 2007 #22 Share Posted June 3, 2007 EXACTLY....... :) No one makes us buy art or gold by the inch. The more others buy of those things, hopefully, the more under control our fares will remain.
RuthC Posted June 3, 2007 #23 Share Posted June 3, 2007 The real beauty is that no one is forced to attend an auction or buy anything. However, the real ugly is that the passageways are lined with this "art" making walking treacherous. A secondary ugly is that passengers cannot sit in chairs in the Ocean Bar because pieces of "art" have taken up the space. I have no problem with the "art" auctions, per se. It's only when it impacts negatively on my cruise that I object. Unfortunately, that impact is constant. And that's not "real beauty" in my eyes. sail7seas Posted June 3, 2007 #24 Share Posted June 3, 2007 The day I can't find a seat in Ocean Bar because a piece of art is 'sitting in the chair' and there are no other empty seats........is the day I lift that piece of art and with care place IT on the floor and ME in the chair. :D
