I Need A Good Book To Read On My Trip

Everybody gives so much info it's great to read all of your suggestions and will pick carefully. Sometimes too much info for me to handle -

I have to admit - Kevin from Sac I am envious - your signature say it all - what a life you have had.

My DH and I are just starting now that the kids are gone - by the way DS lives in Sacramento.

I think I will try Erica Spindler - I like mysteries.

Patricia Cornwell has a new Scarpetta book coming out in October, and Patterson has a new Alex Cross out in November. I just read 4th of July over the weekend... in 5 hours on Saturday out by the pool. His books are such an easy read...I didnt like them at first... thought they were too easy. I thought the same thing about Janet Evanovich when I read the first chapter of the first book... however, she is my favorite now... I laugh out loud everytime I read one of her books (Plum series, not the others) I want Stephanie with Ranger... he seems very HOT! I vote Sandra Bullock for Stephanie. I have also started the Kellerman books (Jonathan and Faye). I love a good mystery...no romance. Tess Gerritsen is good. I read A LOT!! ;)

I love James Patterson. I have read almost everyone of his books. My favorites are the "Womens Murder Club". I am waiting to find 4th of July in paperpack, but no luck yet. I also really like Iris Johanson. Her writing is very similiar to Patterson. She also has a series that centers around a forensic sculptor "Eve Duncan".

 

Of course my favorite author of all time is Mary Higgins Clark. I got hooked on her back in 7th grade. That was around 15 years ago and I still read her today. Weep No More My Lady was my very first book.

Paperbooks are ok, but I listen to Audiobooks! Its so much less work, I don't wanna do all that page turning while I'm on vacation! I think the Dan Brown books are good ones for a trip, and you can't go wrong with Harry Potter, he'll give you something to talk about onthe ship cause almost everyone and their uncle has read those. Put them in your MP3 player and you are good to go!

I have tried the audio books, my fiance loves them, but for me, there is just something about having a book in your hands, and flipping the pages. But we are going on a long trip next month, so I will probably borrow one from the library to keep us company on the road.

I listen to Harry Potter Too!!!!!!! Wife reads on the balcony!!!

I'll suggest anything by Gail Tsukiyama, she's an amazing writer.

Also if you're into comedy, David Sedaris is pretty funny. AS well as Dan Savage, who's written a couple of books.

And if you're into darker stuff, Chuck Palahniuk is always a good bet.

I'll also second the person who suggested Dan Brown. Good, fast, entertaining reads.

Hi Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series is ablolutely hysterical, and definetly "can't put down". They are a nice change from all the "mushy" romances.The only problem is the looks yo get for laughing out loud :D

I couldn't agree more. The Stephanie Plum series is an absolute scream. You will laugh out loud reading these books. The series is up to #11 (Eleven On Top) which I thought was one of the best ones so far.

 

Janet also write another series similar to the Plum books. This one is the Metro Girl series. They come out in Novemeber (where as her Plum books come out in June).

 

Bring two or three of these with you for a cruise as they are very easy reads and perfect for a nice day of laying out by the pool with a cool drink in your hand.

if you are from VA you should definitely read Patricia Cornwell. I love knowing what she is talking about when she describes an area of VA. Nora Roberts is one of my all-time favorite authors & you can't go wrong with anything she writes if you are looking for a romance. I also love Luanne Rice for romance novels (can you tell i am a romantic?). James Patterson is great... Dean Koontz... Michael Palmer... all great authors.

I am not the Stephen King horror fan, but I love mysteries. Just discovered the second book by a mother and daughter team, P. J Tracy, "Live Bait". Now I want to get their first book, "Monkeewrench." Some of their one liners are so quick, you have a lot of fun reread and laughting again.

Also Stephen White has a good series based in Boulder Colo. Did DaVinci, not great writing IMHO, but anything by Ken Follet has some character. Cornwall can get gory and preachy, Grafton is consistent as is Evanovich.

 

Away from series/mystery authors, "the curious incident of the dog in the night-time" (lower case part of the title) by Mark Haddon thrusts one into a world of thought experienced by an austistic child. Don't hesitate to consider it...in fact forget the description....just read a page or two.

 

"Krakatoa" by Winchester deals with the 1863 eruption in Indonesia. Intricate, a bit technical but fascinating. I also wanted to understand more about the area many crew members are from.

 

Finally, the "Secret Life of Bees." Pure honey.

 

Ah I'm looking forward to those sea days...never bored...so many books, so little time:)
