mkbruce Posted July 4, 2007 #1 Share Posted July 4, 2007 The following link contains a JPG image from Google Earth with the Century's track through the Baltic Sea from the 6/15/07 cruise. http://home.austin.rr.com/magnus/Cruise_Track.jpg I captured the track using a portable GPS with an antenna on our balcony (very geeky, I know, but the end result is pretty cool). The itinerary was as follows: Amsterdam At sea Copenhagen At sea Stockholm Helsinki St. Petersburg St. Petersburg Tallin Klaipeda At sea At sea Amsterdam Magnus
Rare Jim_Iain Posted July 4, 2007 #2 Share Posted July 4, 2007 Very cool indeed... Tell me more on how you tracked it. Did you have to have Google Earth Pro?? What type of antenna? GPS? etc I have tried before but would loose signal.
mkbruce Posted July 4, 2007 Author #3 Share Posted July 4, 2007 I used a Garmin GPSMAP 60Cx with a Gilsson external antenna (they make one with a 25 ft cable). The antenna is magnetic, so it sticks to most of the surfaces on the balcony. I let the GPS log the track for each 'leg' of the cruise (i.e. between each of the ports) and then saved each leg to a new track file on GPS. I then used Google Earth Plus ($10-$15 subscription fee per year) to import the tracks and display them.
BurBunny Posted July 4, 2007 #4 Share Posted July 4, 2007 Very, very cool. Thank you! Might have to play with that myself in August. Thank you for doing this for us. The visual is great!

SAN Posted July 4, 2007 #6 Share Posted July 4, 2007 I was on this cruise too. Thanks for the map of the GPS, but does it show how we rocked and rolled on the last day of the cruise? LOL

I have the same Garmin model and want to check with you about your Track interval settings. I want to log all the legs of my 12/29 Crown Princess route. Thanks. mkbruce Posted December 13, 2007 Author #8 Share Posted December 13, 2007 Hi Magnus. I have the same Garmin model and want to check with you about your Track interval settings. I want to log all the legs of my 12/29 Crown Princess route. Thanks. Harold I used the default settings (Tracks, Setup, Record Method: Auto, Interval: Normal) and it had no problems logging a track for 12-18 hours. I started the track just before sail-away and stopped when we arrived in port (this was easy - just turn on the GPS before dinner and stop tracking when you wake up in the morning). I downloaded the track and reset it each day. You can also record tracks to the microSD card, which will give you more track points, especially with a large card. The 60Cx supports up to 2MB microSD cards. Magnus
