first time independent Posted August 17, 2007 #1 Share Posted August 17, 2007 Hi, I'm a first time independent traveler from CA. I will be in Brisbane Australia mid October. I am looking for a one way, economical trip by water (either cruiseline or other creative option) to get from AUS to any port in New Zealand near the end of October or early November. Know any good cheap, one way trips that are short in duration? I can only find 10-14 day trips online...too long because I want to explore the S. Island for 6 weeks if possible, yay! Aussie Gal Posted August 17, 2007 #2 Share Posted August 17, 2007 The cheapest way would be to fly. The only cruise ships that go to New Zealand are the ones that P&O Aust use and the ships that come out here from the U.S. during your winter season. eg. HAL, Princess, Celebrity etc. The website for P&O Aust is: http://www.pocruises.com.au/html/default.cfm Please not that it is a different product altogether from what you are used to in the States. Globaliser Posted August 17, 2007 #4 Share Posted August 17, 2007 I am looking for a one way, economical trip by water (either cruiseline or other creative option) to get from AUS to any port in New Zealand near the end of October or early November.I doubt you'll find anything like this on a mainstream cruise. The closest that you might come is if you could find a line that would sell you a Sydney-Auckland (or similar) sector of a world cruise. But they usually swing through in February-ish. Otherwise, most cruises in the area treat the journey as the event, rather than just as a way of getting from one country to the other. Two possible ideas:- Cargo ship Crewing on a yacht that's repositioning But you'd need some specialist help with this. Frankly, your only realistic option is almost certainly to fly. Globaliser Posted August 17, 2007 #6 Share Posted August 17, 2007 I Googled the words "travel by cargo ship" and got the following links, as a first step:- http://www.geocities.com/freighterman.geo/mainmenu.html http://www.freightertrips.com/ http://www.greentraveller.co.uk/node/24 http://www.gonomad.com/transports/0011/miniguide_freighter_voyage.html http://en.allexperts.com/q/Budget-Travel-2750/Traveling-Aboard-Cargo-Ships.htm http://travel.independent.co.uk/news_and_advice/article360799.ece I can't vouch for any of them - I just literally pulled them off the first two pages of the search. But it can't be difficult to do more research from that start.
