No smoking in cabins & veranda

Just off the phone with my TA who told me that Celebrity will no longer permit smoking in the staterooms and/or verandas on their ships. Smoking will be in designated areas only. This is effective December 1 and was cause by a fire started on a Princess cruise by someone smoking on a balcony and causing a fire in several cabins. I am in the process of verifying this with Celebrity.

However, unlike Royal Caribbean and Regent Seven Seas Cruises, whose recently announced rules will take effect in several months (an advance notice some readers tell us prompted them to cancel bookings), MSC put the policy in place right away -- even in Europe where smoking is quite common.

 

Effective immediately, smoking is no longer allowed in staterooms or on stateroom balconies. Only the Cigar Room, the casino and one lounge will be available for smokers; otherwise, smoking is allowable only in designated areas on deck. Previously, MSC allowed smoking in cabins and in some public rooms on the ships' port sides.

 

MSC's restrictive policy is similar to those of Disney, Azamara Cruises and Oceania Cruises (which does not allow smoking in the casino). As of January 2008, RSSC will no longer allow in-stateroom or on-balcony smoking -- and by next summer, Royal Caribbean International will prohibit smoking in all cabins fleetwide.

Even though the passenger smoked, I thought the fire was ruled to be electrical........in the end.

 

AS for smoking, It should be allowed outside on the verandas, but not in the staterooms...IMHO.

 

I think there could be other causes as well...Travel irons, curling irons left plugged in, 18 appliances plugged ito 1 extension cord, candles.....and of course CHILDREN playing with matches or lighters...( which is a good reason children shouldn'r cruise at all).

 

AS for an update, I haven't heard of one, except for the fact that the AZAMARA ships are non-smoking in allpublic areas except for 2 designated areas.

Actually, after checking all the links (and the links on the links) in the article, I DON'T think X is included in the new RCCL policy. I know this subject is VERY important to quite a few people so I'll do a little more research and see what I can find out. It's this or house work.:rolleyes:

I disagree completely. Although I don't want a stateroom that reeks of smoke (and some of them do), it is far more bothersome to me to have a smoker on a balcony nearby (not just next door, but anywhere where the smoke drifts onto my balcony), since there is nothing much I can do but complain about it.

Nothing really changes. My expensive balcony becomes a waste of money.

 

In a recent instance on HAL, the suite we booked really reeked when we entered the stateroom. HAL came in and—at expense to them that should have been passed on to the previous smoker, in my opinion—removed the draperies, brought in a high-powered machine, shampooed everything, etc. and the stateroom became habitable. The balcony never did. It stank the whole time the smokers were upwind of us.

 

Then on the Infinity a cigar smoker on a balcony below us stank up the entire time spent at Hubbard Glacier. The ship barely moved, turning slowly for all to see the Glacier, so the disgusting smell permeated the entire aft area of the ship.

 

I think Royal Caribbean's new policy of prohibiting smoking in the staterooms but allowing it on the balconies is nothing more than a way for them to save money on cleaning the cabins.

 

By not extending the ban to the balconies, they are doing nothing to protect nonsmokers' rights.

Based on past experience with customer service,don't believe anything until you see a press release. Celebrity is not included in the RC changes....

I'm sure more fires have been caused by drunk adults than by children. Does that mean alcohol shouldn't be on cruise ships at all?

Instead of throwing the kids overboard, let's throw all of the matches and lighters overboard. Then no one could start a fire... young, drunk or otherwise. ;)

Yea!!...well for those of us that don't smoke, it's a yea...sorry for those that do :( But I have to say...some people are not very careful with their cigs...Will be a better cruise experience for all if it is kept in certain areas...

I doubt if it was the same person but they posted the same rumor on Princess threads, I guess they think if they say it enough times it will be a truth! When they outlaw smoking world-wide (like Prohibition worked too), all us scum-sucking smokers will have to stay home or go to the smoke-easy to get a cigarette and have the Untouchables come busting through the door to tell me how to live my life! For all you whiners, WAAAAAHHHHH! You want some cheese with that! By the way, for the cigar-smoking gorilla, he should have followed the rules and gone to the designated areas for cigar smoking but I guess Elliot Ness wasn't there to bust him. There are inconsiderate people smokers and nonsmokers everywhere and all your whining won't solve that one.:rolleyes:

I just noticed the OP has posted 3 times and the one Princess has only posted 1 time and never answers back. They heard this rumor from their TA, sounds to familiar to be a coincidence!:rolleyes:

Nothing like having some foul smoke ruin the sea air, let alone a dinner. In much of Europe, smoking is no forbidden as well...many resturants, and bars etc..and public places. When we lived in Italy in 2002-2003 It was already part of the norm to prohibit smoking in many places..and the laws are not stricter.

Isn't it about time you gave this train of thought a rest!! Solstice is coming and all indications are Celebrity is going to turn into a family line. How else will they sell 1500 cabins on a weekly basis to the very mundane Caribbean seven day cruises.

The problem with this is people toss their lighted cigarette butts into the sea only to have the wind blow them right on to someone elses veranda a deck or two below! the same as someone heaving a big spitball being cute to see how far it goes & it comes right onto your veranda floor! There should be designated smoking areas - period. IMHO.

Your T/A is incorrect on 3 counts.

Firstly there has been no announcement [yet] from Celebrity on this. Secondly perhaps she is getting confused with RCI which is stopping smoking in the rooms - but not on the balconies - and thirdly the date from which this starts in Jan 1. I would change T/As if I were you.......

This is what I just received from my TA..................

"As to the non-smoking in cabins/verandahs. I could not put my hand on the print out so I called Celebrity for you. It came out on 9/1/07 that effective 2/1/08 there will be no smoking in any cabins/verandahs on any of the Celebrity fleet. Their sister company Azamara is already non-smoking in cabins/verandahs. Also when I called I asked the question you posed to me regarding which side of the ship is currently non-smoking in cabins and was advised that until the policy change - smoking is allowed in all cabins/verandahs and not restricted to either side of the ship."
