snohflake Posted June 17, 2004 #1 Share Posted June 17, 2004 Hi there. Does anybody have any experience with this group? Has anybody out there done a kayaking excursion and enjoyed it? Hated it? Thanks! http://www.mindspring.com/~jbferret/wd2an.gif
hooked-on-travel Posted June 17, 2004 #2 Share Posted June 17, 2004 We loved every minute of our trip with them last year. We had such a good time we're going back this year. We did the 4-hr Orca one last year, so we're doing a custom trip this year. It sounds even better and it's very reasonably priced. Have fun with them. You won't be sorry! natesfirewife Posted June 18, 2004 #3 Share Posted June 18, 2004 We used them also last summer. We liked that it was a small group, 6 total. And the smoked salmon they had for a snack was awesome. We did the Orca Cove tour and although we didn't see any whales we saw lots of eagles, salmon jumping all over the place and otter looking kind of animal. Not to mention all the starfish and jellyfish. Alaska has these beautiful red jellyfish that billow up like stars, but don't touch they sting!! Anyways, you have our vote for Southeast Sea Kayaks. ElaineB2 Posted June 18, 2004 #4 Share Posted June 18, 2004 I want to go kayaking, but there are whales right in the same water where you kayak, correct? I'm afraid that they can tip the kayak over. I know I'm probably sounding a little stupid about this, but I'm truly afraid that if a whale jumped right near the kayak, it could tip it over or I'd be scared to death. Does that or can it happen? Budget Queen Posted June 18, 2004 #5 Share Posted June 18, 2004 Whales are very uncommon in the kayaking area. I have only heard of one incident of whales in the area over several years. I have never seen them on my kayak trips. But verify this directly with the vender.
snohflake Posted June 19, 2004 Author #6 Share Posted June 19, 2004 Thanks for the replies. Looks like the way to go. We like the idea that we won't be with 20 other kayaks! It's a nice opportunity to get away from the crowds of the ship. Question for hooked-on-travel, what type of custome trip have you planned? Is it a half-day thing or longer? Thanks! bonsai1 Posted June 19, 2004 #7 Share Posted June 19, 2004 We are booked for the 7AM Orcas Cove trip , our ship ( Island Princess) arrives at 6:30. Is this cutting it too close? I'm sure they are familiar with the cruise ship schedule and would've advised otherwise.
mpk Posted June 19, 2004 #8 Share Posted June 19, 2004 I've only gone kayaking once, in Hawaii. Are these kayaks in Alaska the type that you sit on top of? Or the type where your legs actually go into the body of the boat? I ask because they behave very differently if the kayak should happen to flip. I guess what I'm asking is are these "bunny" kayaks or professional ones? I'm looking for the bunny ones
sibylcoe Posted June 19, 2004 #9 Share Posted June 19, 2004 mpk The kayaks used by Southeast Sea Kayaks are the kind that your legs go in. You also wear a skirt around the opening. I found them to be very comfortable. However, my son, who sat in the back and is fairly tall, said he felt cramped and unable to move his legs around. We both really enjoyed it. It was just the two of us on our trip.
