salty dingo Posted December 16, 2007 #4 Share Posted December 16, 2007 I think Nextel requires a different type of technology than is found on the ships, so it won't work at sea. Not sure if any ports of call have this service either. Best bet is to take a regular cell phone if you must have one.

linwood77 Posted December 16, 2007 #6 Share Posted December 16, 2007 thanks for the input folks. i thought ncl had cell phone service through he ship. They do, they call it Freestyle cellular. However it only supports GSM and CDMA. Nextel uses iDEN. Sparkylok6 Posted December 16, 2007 #7 Share Posted December 16, 2007 They do have cell service through Cellular at Sea. I have Nextel and Verizon and the Nextel never worked on the ship or in any of the ports. I think they have to sign up with Cellular at Sea to get the service and you have to have a specific type of phone to be able to use it. Check out their website for more info. http://www.cellularatsea.com Good Luck.

Sparkylok6 Posted December 16, 2007 #10 Share Posted December 16, 2007 Has anyone had any luck with Sprint? That is a very good question....since now Nextel has those hybrid phones...nextel for direct connect and Sprint for Cell service. I guess I will find out in April. My husband and son have those type of phones.
SPman00 Posted December 17, 2007 #11 Share Posted December 17, 2007 I left my cell phone on while at sea and received a few text messages, I'm very scared of seeing the phone bill!
