Enjoying every moment Posted December 19, 2007 #1 Share Posted December 19, 2007 I'm going on a South American cruise in April and would love to take a novel that has a South American setting. Cruise starts in Buenos Aires, continues around Cape Horn and along the Chilean coast. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
ab0si Posted December 19, 2007 #2 Share Posted December 19, 2007 Anything by Isabel Allende (daughter of the president of Chile assassinated in a CIA sponsored coup). Brilliant writer, both fiction and non-fiction The Old Patagonia Express by Paul Theroux is fascinating. Any of the many books on Peron (both of them)... I have my favorites but I am sure this is heavily influenced by my political leanings.
paul929207 Posted December 19, 2007 #3 Share Posted December 19, 2007 Thorton Wilder - Bridge at San Luis Rey - Takes place in Peru during Spanish time.
Mary Ellen Posted December 19, 2007 #4 Share Posted December 19, 2007 Since I like the mystery/thriller genre, I'm taking Amazonia by James Rollins with me in January when we sail from Rio - Santiago via Antarctica. I've already read The Hostage by W.E.B. Griffin (takes place in Buenos Aires) but I'm bringing it (on MP3) for DH. The follow-up is The Hunters taking place in Uruguay, which I'll also have on MP3 for us to listen to on the cruise.
cherylandtk Posted December 19, 2007 #5 Share Posted December 19, 2007 Another vote for Isabelle Allende, or Gabriel Garcia *****. One Hundred Years of Solitude if you have not read it.
Rare cruisemom42 Posted December 19, 2007 #6 Share Posted December 19, 2007 Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia ***** (a wonderful book recently made into a less than stellar movie....)
sultan_sfo Posted December 20, 2007 #7 Share Posted December 20, 2007 Another vote for "The Hostage" WEB Griffen. Thick book will last almost the whole cruise. Fun and interesting. We gave our book to the steward at the end of the cruise because they have a crew library.
