Smoke-free casino

Recommended Posts

It really wouldn't bother me if the casino wasn't hoppin'. Last June we could barely ever find a decent slot machine to sit at ~ just too crowded.

:D Indeed. I'm a smoker, but I found it a lot more pleasant in the casino on non smoking nights. Not because of the smoke factor, but because we were always able to get a seat at the blackjack table and at the slots.

It would be financial suicide for the ships to go smoke free. They saw what happened to the Carnival Paradise, and they have no intent of making a ship smoke free. They will limit where you can smoke, but they won't make a ship smoke free. You can hope and hope, but it won't happen. You are right, the citys and states are going smoke free, but the person can still smoke, just not in public. Big difference then stepping outside on the sidewalk to smoke in a smoke free city, as opposed to a person out on a cruise ship in the middle of nowhere, and not able to smoke.

Like it or not, the smokers are faithful, and will go where they can smoke. When our city went smoke free last year, we had 17 bars close in 9 weeks because of lack of business. 6 months later, we had 32 close, and this happens everywhere citys and states go smoke free. The cruise industry knows this, and won't go smoke free.

I totally hate smoking and yet I have to agree completely. Asking a smoker to refrain for a few hours in a bar or restaraunt and asking them to refrain for a week are very different, and frankly not very fair to them.

Yes that's what I honestly think.

Very excited here, I am going on my first Royal Caribbean in 16 days. I can't wait.

I think it will be many years before they go smoke free, but in the near future I think that policies like Azamara's will become the norm - a couple isolated smoking areas that are out of the way so that non-smokers will be minimally impacted.

And for every bar that "closes" because of a smoking ban, another opens. Research has repeatedly shown that smoking bans are neutral to positive overall for the service industries (yes there are individual exceptions, but the vast majority thrive).

And why do people keep referring to Carnival Paradise; not only is that outdated people who mention it seem to leave out important facts such as that it did quite well for a while, but continued to sail the same itinerary. There were a lack of repeat customers because people wanted to try out different ships / itinieraries. If a cruise line made an entire fleet smoke free in today's atmosphere it would be a much different story.

No true, Florida restaurant business actually increased after the smoking ban.

Is it possible to stick to the topic which was, I believe, someone reporting a ship had a couple of nights smoke free. I think we've "hashed" the pros and cons of it already....haven't we. What I would find interesting now is the scope of the smoke free nights on different ships, not rehashing the same pros and cons.

Exactly, You ask a question about how a new policy is going and everyone gets on their soapbox. Statements like "furthermore I believe" and "soon every ship will be" only inflame and don't answer the op's question. I will now get off "my" soapbox.

In Bob Dickensons new edition of "Selling the Sea" he elaborates on the Paradise...

"Unfortunatly after an 8 year run, Carnival gave up on the non-smoking Paradise....Despite the fact that 80% of the adult population didn't smoke, the consumer demand for the ship wasn't as strong as for other Carnival ships on comparable itineraries. Group business, for example, was running in the 10-15% range, or about 1/2 of Carnivals normal group mix."

He goes on to say..

"Carnival's marketing folks reckoned that the lower demand cost the company up to $10 a day in guest ticket revenue and close to another $10 a day in net on-board revenue. (Nonsmokers drank and gambled far less than their smoking counterparts.) The estimated lost profit opportunity amounted to as much as $16 million per year by the time the Paradise was converted to a traditional smoking ship.

How much lost revenue would that equate to today?

Bingo-to you and cruisinMike-goes the prize! :D

I swear-this is such an issue here on the board of the preachers but while on your vacation-you don't hear a peep.

Smokers are in their area's and the non-smokers can choose to avoid those areas.

There are many cruise lines that are far more restrictive then RC. Complaining on this board will not make RC change their policy. It is you-the consumer-who is bothered so highly by second hand smoke to choose the line that suits your needs.

I was on the Radiance in September and formal nights were smoke free. One casino exec told me it was because ladies were complaining about their more expensive dresses being damaged by the smell of smoke. Who knows?

I'm wondering too if the casino might be less crowded because couples do other (dare I say romantic?) things more often on formal night because they are all dressed up. Dancing, shows, etc.

My thoughts exactly. I did the Carnival Paradise. The problem was it was the same itinerary over and over. Had they changed the itinerary once in a while I would have done the ship again.

We have our first new bar that opened in our town as completely smoke-free. You cannot find a seat in the evenings. Hopefully a few others will follow.

I am a smoker...I am a sinner...:D

I am a nonsmoker but still a sinner. :D

I do agree, though, that smokers should have their place to smoke. But my preference would be that it would be only in designated areas specifically for smokers, not public areas like casinos. Anybody know if they offer this on AOS? I'm leaving Sunday and would love it if this were an option.
