To be honest with you

Barbados is too populated an island for your Deserted Island scenario

except in some lonely places over on the East Coast

where you might be better off with two big hairy husbands in your group.

Close to the ship.. a quiet beach is Brandons/Brighton Beach,

often referred to as Malibu because of the popular beach bar(at one end)

and laid-back Weisers at the other end, closest to your ship.

Midway in between the two should be quiet enough for you

in front the local Brighton residences, but down at the Weisers end is generally uncrowded

with little or no beach vending and your ship is right there within sight!

Parts of Carlisle Bay are away from the madding crowd(read: Boatyard)

if you walk along its 2-mile-long curve to select a spot that turns you on.

The pics you see should give you some idea as to overall beach conditions..

I agree with Aplmac.. I personally like a spot on Carlisle bay just beyond Bridgetown. The spot on the main road is the old fish market, just beyond Jemmotts Lane (any bus driver would know the spot -just across from St. Patricks Church). it's relatively quite. There is a little beach bar there called Finally Michaels if you need food and drink. There are some benches set back from the beach, and you can walk around the area and find some trees to prop yourself under and just relax.

aplmac, you are a great ambassador for the island. Would you kindly advise best beach place for myself, wife and two boys (ages 8 and almost 5) to visit? We want something quiet but not too quiet and would also welcome your recommendation on engaging a driver for the day as well.

Many thanks

Accra Beach is probably about right, given the ages you state(you're 41)

Look at the pictures on my website(URL in a post above).

Don't 'get a driver for the day'.

That sounds at odds with your beach-day,no??

Get yourself to Accra, chill there for the day

(it's in a tourist-active area nearby)

and then get a cab (or bus) back.

Brandon's/Brighton Beach was great. We pretty much had the whole place to ourselves. Great snorkeling, too. (Bring water shoes....lots of shells). You can see pics in my snapfish link, and read a review from the Amsterdam in my signature.

We're headed back there on our next cruise. :)

That says a lot!

Brandons and Weiser's are laid-back...not as pretty-sea-Glam as Accra

but for those who want a quiet beach-scene and calm water

well within sight of the ship

you can do no better than Brandons/Brighton beach

with Weisers Bar at the close end - and Malibu(with rum refinery) at the far end.

Tell me, Aplmac-

I'm SEMI tempted to venture over to Crane Beach in November. Will the taxi fare clobber us from the port?

Brighton/Brandon Beach was SO CLOSE, PRETTY, CONVENIENT, and INEXPENSIVE! I'm fairly certain that we won't find $2 Banks Beers at Crane like we enjoyed at Weisers! ;)

We love your island, BTW. We're very happy to be returning! :)

**edited to say that we were PERFECTLY HAPPY at Brighton, and my husband thinks I'm nuts to want to venture elsewhere! **

We love your island, BTW. We're very happy to be returning! :) ===> Thanks ..and welcome back!

- we were PERFECTLY HAPPY at Brighton, and my husband thinks I'm nuts to want to venture elsewhere!

Well.. you could try somewhere else without going right across the island to The Crane!

Seeing as The Crane is now a resort, turning into a mega-resort

it's completely at the other end of 'the accommodation spectrum'

compared to laid back Brighton Beach and Weisers!! :)

Since you already like the Brighton/Weisers ambiance

you might want to wander up the West Coast (past the now-infamous Blue Monkey at Paynes Bay)

to the HOLETOWN/Sunset Crest area, where sea conditions are like Brighton.

You might find that to your liking.. a bit more up-market than Weisers/Brighton

but not like it is at The Crane.

Taxi fare to Crane will not be cheap, but then how badly do you want to go?

I'm not good with taxi-fares since, as a local resident/citizen

I have my own car and haven't used taxis in decades

but I wouldn't be surprised to hear that average taxi fare from the Port to The Crane

one-way ..for 2 of you in a car ..is going to run at least US$30,

if not 40 or 50,depending on who you talk to and who you get!

And if you sell part of that big block of IBM stock you're holding

you guys might even afford the ride back to the Bridgetown Port:D

_________________________________________________

Solution: get together another Crane-bound couple or two

and split the taxi fare to and from, yah?

The Bds.$25 beach-access day rate is refundable at the bar and restaurant

so you have that on your side

and you don't have to go overboard on what you eat and drink.

As other people have told me, Crane's menu isn't that expensive

if you avoid the lobster and other high-flying items!

Speaking of which...if Lobster turns you on,

you could taxi over to Lobster Alive, just a short ways on the other side of Bridgetown

be close to the ship, pay zilch for beach access

rent a $5 chair and a $5 umbrella from Art at Lobster Alive

(i.e. Carlisle Bay - also calm like Brighton, but a nicer beach)

have Lobster lunch there and be no more than about 10mins.(traffic!) away from your ship.

Oh God - all these options!

APLMAC- I've enjoyed reading your posts. I have a question about Harrison's Cave. I got on their website and sent an email weeks ago, but haven't heard anything back. I wanted to make sure they were open, as I had noticed they had been closed for renovations. We want to go there, and then do a beach for the rest of the day.

How far is it from the pier to Harrison's Caves? Do they have bus routes there, or would our best bet be to get a cab?

Thanks! We've never been to this port, and are really looking forward to it. Reading about all the things to do on these boards is getting us excited. I love the planning part!

One question, where exactly is Accra. Say on Google Earth...
on the South-West Coast of Barbados.

Find Bridgetown, capital city of the island...down in the SW part of the island,

now run it down at about "four o' clock" direction (ESE) from Bridgetown

not too far

and you'll come across Accra or ROCKLEY as is it's correct name.

near Bubba's/Chefette/ WORTHING(is immediately East of Accra/Rockley)

Do they have bus routes there, or would our best bet be to get a cab? ===> Taxi..definitely.

It's just too difficult to bus it, and too easy to cab/taxi it, seriously.

We thought we'd be happy to just see your famous cricket grounds, but now that we've seen your photos of the beautiful beaches and aqua water, we'll just have to have a swim and a stroll along a beach (even though we live at the beach). The quiet one you recommended within sight of the ship sounded just perfect.

Thanks.

I was on Accra a week ago Monday and it was laid back without being dead. aplmac is right on about this beach.

There are some food and drink stands right there. One of these grills some really nice fish. I had a grilled marlin sandwich for US$7.50.

Cab fare was $20 one way.

Cab fare was $20 one way.

It kinda makes sense to taxi there,to begin the day

since you're not quite sure where you're going

- and then bus it back later, if you feel like being adventurous.

Simply because once you hop a City-bound bus

at the little bus-shelter opposite Chefette fast-food(great pizza!)

you're bound for only one place - Bridgetown..

And even though your ride may terminate on the other side of the City to where the Port is

at least you're close! ..well...close-ish!

Depends on how adventurous you feel at 3:30 p.m.!

Maybe leave the beach a bit earlier to bus it back into Bridgetown,

then it's a quick walk into the Broad Street area to browse the shops

and then get a quick $5 cab ride back to the Port

when you're done shopping.

How does that sound?
