Casino cash advances

We haven't been on X for about a year and a half and we're getting ready to leave on the Mercury.

I have forgotten if they have a service charge for cash advances in the casino (when there's not charge for a cash advance, we find it more convenient than carrying Traveler's checks for spending money). I wanted to search for the answer, but search is down tonight, so I'll apologize in advance for starting a new thread...

Can anyone give a quick 411 on the casino cash-advance policies on Celebrity?

Thanks in advance!

Darcie you are the BEST! We've always avoided the ATMs (why pay the fee if you don't have to), but I couldn't remember for the life of me how Celebrity handled the advances.

Thank you so much for the quick response. It will save a trip to the bank for a lot of traveler's checks.

The advances are charged to your bill - the ATM is like any other ATM and is charged directly to the bank account is is linked to.

When we cruise, we try to carry as few credit cards, etc., as possible - by using the casino as our "bank", we don't have to carry Traveler's check's either.

Some cruise lines do charge as much as 3% as a "service fee" for such advances...for those, we bring traveler's checks and cash them at the purser or casino.

I thought Celebrity was trying to discourage this practice, but evidently not.

I wonder why they do it as all lines do. When a coompany takes a card they pay a % to clear the transaction. That is why when you return something they want to put it back on the card to get the % back. Maybe because they figure you will leave it in the casino. You cannot do it at the front desk.;)

We were on the Connie last Oct. I went to the casino cashier several times and took cash several hundred dollars each time, charged to our on-board account, thence to the credit card I had posted. No fees or premiums charged to me...perhaps the credit card co. charged 1% or so, but Celebrity ate that.

We used a Bank of America/Celebrity affinity card, got double points for charge to Celebrity. So, let's say I got $2,000 cash in the casino, carried the cash home with me, it cost me nothing and I got 4,000 points on the credit card.

At perhaps $500-600 per transaction, I saw no indication that anyone watched to see if I gambled, or how much, or how long; certainly they did not ask me, at the cage, what had I done with the other $1400 they had already given me.

I can't speak from experience on Celebrity, but I can tell you that Princess charges 3% for cash in the casino. Hard to believe they would do it for free; if so, as mentioned above, why not get $2000 every day to get the credit card miles, then just keep the cash to pay the CC bill when you get back.

That is what Celebrity does and has for a number of years. I have taken money out for the casino, tips and other expenses. Got my miles and never a charge...

RCCL and Carnival charge also. Other than taking all the cash off I will look into it on my next cruise.

I am on the Constellation now. Last Day @ sea, heading into Ft. Lauderdale.

They Are trying to discourage cash advances in the casino for anything other then "Gaming Purposes" as I was just told by a very grumpy lady at the bank desk in the lobby. She told me to use the ATM. I dont have my credit card set up with a pin number, so that wouldnt work for me, even if I wanted too.

Of course, how does the casino know how much you are going to play with. :o I had no problems getting the cash in the casino.

I had a similar experience when the casino cashier gave me a hard time. So I walked away ticked off. I guess he knows who the players are and who are not.
