If you can time the train correctly it would be a better way to go but regarding cost - with Quick Shuttle you can board right at Canada Place if that is where you ship is docked and Quick Shuttle will drop you at Sea Tac - if you take the train you will need to add the expense of getting from Canada Place to the Amtrak station and in Seattle from the King Street Station to Sea Tac so their might not be a savings - the train ride hugs the coastline for much of the trip while the bus follows I - 5 all the way.

 

If you are planning on staying overnight in Seattle then the train would be my choice.

Thanks go to Urban trekker, Scottbee and Putterdude for help with our visit to Vancouver. The Canada Line train was ideal for getting downtown and back. We had an upgrade at Delta Vancouver Suites, the 14th floor facing the Lookout tower. Too bad there were some showers both embarkation day, Sept. 5, and disembarkation day, Sept. 19. Putterdude, once again we crossed paths getting on and off ships! We got off the Sapphire yesterday and you got on!!!

 

Can't wait to book another cruise!

PUTTERDUDE, since you were sailing when I posted this I wanted to bring it back so you can read it. I appreciate all the good advice you give us on these boards. Sorry your lovely cruise ended so badly, and I hope someone at Princess listens to what you and others have to say about this debacle. We enjoyed the staff, the food, the itinerary, everything about our cruise. So much we are already booked on the Diamond Bangkok to Whittier in April 2010. Any chance we'll be running into you getting on, off, or actually sailing with us? lol!

Thank you for your kind remarks. I envy your next cruise but I think we are going to stick to wamer climes for the next while (I am now starting to work on the theory that it is easier to take clothes off then it is to put them on:D) so it is not likely that we are going to see one another this spring. However if you are on a Caribbean itinerary in January 2010 or 2011, I would enjoy meeting you. As to how our cruise ended, I am quite satisfied that this was a one off situation and Princess won't rush to try that again.

I just wanted to stop in and thank all your Vancouverites as well as others that gave advise when I asked a question.

 

Our hotel the Westin Bayshore was great. The Hop On/Hop Off trolley was fantastic. We did both routes the first day and then went back and did want we wanted the next.

 

Your guys aquarium is fantastic. Love the 4D IMAX movie.

 

Had great food and could find free wifi with little problem.

 

Thanks again for all your help and in anyone is heading my way and needs some help, hunt me down on the Alaska Port of Calls board.

I just returned from New York City where we went to several VERY nice upscale Asian themed restaurants... not cheap, but wonderful... Can you recommend something with ooodles of ambiance and great food in the downtown area?

In greater Vancouver there are about 1,000 Chinese restaurants and everyone has a favourite. My two (the third one had a fire a week or two ago) are the Floata Seafood House in Chinatown and the Fortune Garden Seafood restaurant at 1475 W. Broadway.

Azia on Smythe St. is excellent. Menu is posted on their website if you are interested. I am typically suspicious of an Asian restaurant that offers food from many countries, but everything I have had there has been delicious.

 

Has quite a lively atmosphere, particularly on a weekend evening.

This thread has had quite a run over the past couple of years and I think we can all be proud of the information we have provided through it. For myself I have been in AZ since late October and it looks like by month's end I will have played some 32 golf games since we arrived which is just slightly better than playing every other day. I have taken a bit of a

sabbatical from posting on these boards ..... for no good reason other than I just haven't seemed to have the time and have focusing on our cruise in the southern Caribbean next month.

However the real reason for this post is to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and all the best for 2010.

If I don't mind travelling back and forth to Whistler it looks like I can have the volunteer opportunity that was presented to me. There are two training days in early Jan where you can make your final decision.

we will be cruising in july out of seattle. after the cruise we will be renting a car. i definitely want to visit vancouver for 1 possibly 2 nites. would you:

1. drive the rental car into vancouver

 

or

 

2. leave the rental in the us and taking the amtrak train.

 

:)

suggestions please.

It really is a personal decision but I would be inclined to recommend taking Amtrak. Amtrak is much less stressfull than driving the Interstate to Vancouver never mind the wait at the border. Also, parking at any downtown hotel is going to run you $20 per night and Vancouver is not the easiest city to drive around if this is a first visit, plus you will be paying for parking at each sight you want to see. Once in Vancouver you may want to consider one of the HOHOs for seeing the sights and I will attach a couple of links for your convenience.

How are you doing after that hockey game tonight?

 

UPSET!!! I do take solace in the fact that Canada did outshoot the US by a wide margin, something like 45 to 22, but when a goalie, Miller, is hot there is not much you can do about it. However, it was a great game to watch.:(

As people are starting to think about Vancouver in terms of their Alaska cruise and this thread obviously contains a great deal of information about Vancouver, I am taking the liberty of bumping it.

Bumpy, bumpy, bumpy - posting from a very snowy Whistler - had about 6 inches last night and it is coming down hard as I type this post - will escort my delegation down to BC Place for the opening ceremonies but we don't get to see much as some of the athletes are heading right back up and I will have to be on one of the buses to assist them - give them there supper and water etc.

Hello,

 

We fly into Vancouver on 5/16/10 for a cruise that departs on 5/17/10. We are staying at the Delta Vancouver Suites. Can you tell me if there is a market or store near the hotel where I can purchase a case of water and maybe some wine for our cruise. We will not have a rental car so would prefer walking distance or short cab ride. Thank you.

Across the street from the hotel in Hoarbour Centre you will find a BC Liquor store where you will be able to purchase wine. Two blocks south on Seymour St. (away from the water) there is a 7-11 on the corner of Dunsmuir St. and a London Drugs at the corner of Granville and Georgia about 4 blocks from the hotel for your soda.
