On the Oosterdam Hubbard Glacier itinerary, are there suggestions for selecting a cabin either on the port or starboard side? We are booking an SA level cabin and have a choice of either side on the Rotterdam deck. Thanks for any advice!

DH and I have gone to Alaska 4 times now and each and every time we a method of viewing the Glaciers that works well for us. We always select Starboard side because when you go to Hubbard Glacer the best view will be forward on the Bow and Port side in the very begining so that is when we dress warm and spend the first part of the viewing out on the bow with everyone including the Naturalist. Then about the time the Captain turns the ship for view on the Starboard side is about the time we are ready to go in and warm up so we head back to our cabin, grab a hot cocoa from the Neptune and then head out to our verandah and enjoy the view from our cabin.

Now many will tell you Port side because the ship does seem to stay toward the Glacier longer on Port side but we really enjoy being out with our fellow passengers on the Bow.

Your method makes a lot of sense, Lisa. Personally, I'd be lower down on Promenade, but I like the idea of being able to head on in when the ship moves to starboard viewing, and yet not miss any of the action. :D

Good idea.

Have been to Alaska quite a few times.

The captains on most of the ships - especially in Hubbard Glacier keep the PORT side of the ship facing the glaciers the longest. One time in Hubbard we the port side of the ship faced the glacier for 2 hours while the starboard got only about 1/2 hour. And they missed all the action.

The Crow's Nest and Observation areas outside are the best for viewing.
