I see many questions on other board about trip insurance but I need to know about the NCL trip Insurance policy which I DID NOT take. I see no where on the board to read it. Is it a cancellation for any reason policy or are there MANY things not included? Does anyone have a policy to tell me if "missed flights" or "cancelled flights" are covered? All the ones I look at says it has to be a 24 hour down time on airline or not covered. THANKS!

Travel Protection Coverage

Offering "Cancel For Any Reason" Coverage.

Sometimes even the best made plans can go wrong. An emergency can force you to cancel your cruise, your baggage could be delayed or lost, or you could have a medical emergency during your cruise. That's why Norwegian Cruise Line offers Travel Protection, a travel protection program designed especially for NCL guests. From trip cancellation to baggage protection, Travel Protection offers a wide range of travel protection and assistance services so that you can plan and enjoy your vacation with total peace of mind.

Travel Protection CoverageTrip Cancellation/Interruption Protection

Reimbursement for any nonrefundable cancellation charges imposed by Norwegian Cruise Line if you must cancel or interrupt your vacation due to covered medical conditions or other specified causes affecting you, your immediate family members or your traveling companions.

Trip Delay Protection

Up to $500 reimbursement to cover accommodations, meals and transportation to the ship should you miss your departure due to covered airline delays or other specified causes.

Baggage Protection

Up to $1,500 to replace baggage and personal property that is lost, stolen or damaged. If luggage is delayed by the airline for more than 24 hours, you'll be reimbursed up to $750 for covered personal expenses.

Baggage Protection Medical Coverage

Up to $10,000 for medical expenses - among the highest limits available - if you become sick or injured during your trip. Medicare and many private insurance policies generally do not cover you outside of the US. And many HMOs do not cover you outside of their provider district.

Emergency Evacuation

Up to $25,000 for emergency air or ground transportation due to a serious illness or injury. Private policies, HMOs and Medicare do not generally offer this coverage.

Emergency Assistance

Should you need help with lost documents, cash transfers and other travel problems, we offer a 24-hour hotline for worldwide assistance.

Important note: This is just a summary of coverage. Please refer to the Description of Coverage in the Travel Protection (Travel Care Free) information booklet available from your travel agent or Norwegian Cruise Line, which contains the complete details of the policy terms, conditions, and exclusions, including preexisting condition exclusion and other applicable limitations. If you have any questions, call our Travel Protection Information number: 1.800.722.5672. The policy provides limited benefits health insurance only. It doesn't provide basic hospital, basic medical or major medical insurance as defined by the New York State Insurance Department. The insurance coverage provided by Norwegian Cruise Line is underwritten by the National Union Fire Insurance Company of Pittsburgh, PA, Policy No 9500222. Travel Protection is provided in addition to the other applicable insurance or indemnity programs, where permitted by law and shall apply only after benefits have been paid. The Travel Protection plan cost may be paid at any time from deposit up to and including final payment; however, trip cancellation coverage takes effect only upon payment of your Travel Protection cost. Payment of your cruise fare deposit without Travel Protection will not activate your coverage. All other coverage is effective upon your departure for your trip. Payment of your cruise fare deposit without Travel Protection will not activate your coverage.

Important note: Cruise credits can not be applied to government taxes and fees, air add-ons, land packages, travel insurance, shore excursions, gratuities, incidentals or any purchases of a personal nature. They are non-transferable and may not be combined with other cruise credit certificates or fare reduction coupons.

NCL Special Features

I don't know what NCL charges for their insurance...I rarely buy the cruiselines insurance, it's usually expensive.

I google, "cruise insurance" or "trip insurance" and you will get an unbelievable response, with choices and prices to fit your needs.

Try it...and good luck!

The price of travel insurance is based on the value of the trip. It will cost more to cover a $500 trip vs a $10,000 trip. Some travel insurance will also take the age of the client into account. NCL insurance does not but just price it accordly to the value of the trip. Most travel insurance policies start at arorund $30 - $50 and will go up from there.

Yup, I understand that the insurace price is based on the cost of your trip, but there is still a wide variation in price for policies that are similar. I just think you are wise to shop around for the one that covers what you want it to cover and at a price that works for your budget. ;)

Travel insurance is one of the reason's that we typically use a Travel Agent. Our TA selects our travel insurance based on our desire to have 'absolutely everything' covered. Since we frequently travel in the winter or early spring and live in a northern climate when sudden snow storms can paralyze travel, our policies always must have a provision to ensure that we are able to catch up with our trip as soon as possible. We have never had to use our travel insurance but it does give us peace of mind and add to the positive tone of our whole trip.

I would strongly recommend that unless you are totally comfortable with making your own travel insurance selections, that you may want to tap into the expertise offered by a reputable travel agent.

For those who want to chance it without travel insurance, my DP and I were the same way, until a week ago when I read a thread about how much it costs for emergency evacuation for medical issues. Costs for that could be any where from $25,000.00 to $75,000.00. We read that most health insurance companys do not cover you for that. We did research and found Travel Medical Insurance abounds. This covers you for the medical aspect of any issues you encounter while abroad, but not really for any expenses that you have due to missing your trip.

I suggest you check this out even if you thought you would never want travel insurance. Come to find out, both of our insurances companies via work cover emergency care (including evacuation) while in a foreign country, but the insurance we bought would cover any expenses that we were out of pocket after our primary insurance pays. I am 44 and it cost $27.00 for our cruise we are taking in October and my DP is 37 and it cost $19.00 for him. For peace of mind for us not being out $1,000.00 if something happens (deductibles, co-pays, etc), well worth the money. Plus, if something happens to one of us, it pays to fly the other to the city where the other is evact'ed to. For that small cost we got $1,000,000.00 coverage and NO pre-existing condition clause.

I checked with my brother-in-law before we purchased and he said his only suggestion was to make sure the company is rated at least a A on the A.M. Best Rating. We went to Insuremytrip.com and found a ton of options.

We did not purchase this for our Alaskan cruise because, of course, we will be on American soil, expect for a short time and while in international waters. Guess on this upcoming trip we are chancing it.

Myself and two other people were booked onto an NCL cruise and we all bought the insurance through NCL (AON). The cruise was a Casino discounted ticket through one of the travelers. For medical reasons the person that held the casino voucher is cancelling going on the cruise. The other guest is also cancelling because the first person is cancelling. I still would like to go. We all paid around $350 for the cruise (all inclusive). NCL says that if I go alone the additional fare will be $906. When I read the insurance coverage it says that they will pay for increase in the per person cabin fare if a covered person cancels for a covered reason and another covered person does not cancel. I just wanted someone to confirm either through personal experience or knowledge of the policy that they will pay the $906. Anyone have any idea??

One "loophole" many of the health insurance policies have is that they cover in a foreign country but NOT on the high seas. And they will consider your illness where you started getting ill, not where you are evacuated to, so getting sick 3 miles out at sea means you have no health coverage. It is very hard to get an explanation of this from the insurance companies, so you really have to dig to see if they cover you "on the high seas".

Good Morning All,

Looks like we will be looking into the trip protection to see if we can get a refund or rebook a new date. We're 2 weeks out from heading out of Miami on the NCL Escape to St. Thomas, Tortola, and Nassau all of which will be hit by Irma by Saturday. The island videos are already coming out St. Thomas and Tortola were hit extremely hard with much damage so not really a viable stops now. Nassau and Port of Miami are TBD at this point. So, we'll have to see what NCL does. Last year we were on RCL-Allure and never made it to any of the planned ports due to storms.. This is getting to be a sign September may not be the best time to cruise any longer.. Our prayers for those in the path of Irma and our friends in Houston... we'll have to see how this plays out.

Welcome to the forum. Please don't bump up threads like this from 2008. Most often they contain outdated information that may confuse people reading it who don't realize how old they are.

Hope your cruise works out as well as can be expected.

While on NCL Breakaway, my husband encountered pain in his leg, back and foot due to neuropathy. We were informed that acupuncture might remedy this. My husband encountered several treatments which cost in excess of $600. We submitted our claim to AON book safe insurance purchased from NCL. And also submitted the claim to Medicare, our primary, as instructed by AON. Medicare denied the claim and when we submitted the claim to AON, they denied the claim, on the basis that treatment was not ordered by a physician. We assumed that the acupuncturist was a Dr.

Previously when my husband needed accupuncture on NCL, under Travel Guard, the treatment was covered.

Please advise if there is anything we can do..

Hmmm, yours and a few others' experience with NCL's Book Safe insurance are indication that it is a better idea to purchase insurance outside of the cruise line.

This is exactly what I found out when I talked to an agent for GeoBlue, and international travel arm for BCBS. I use them a lot of international travel, but they are not a good option for me on a cruise, as I would only be covered in a foreign port, not at sea or on the ship. This is a very good point and a very important one to share. Fortunately nothing happened on a cruise I did when I got insurance from them, not realizing that I did not have the coverage that I thought I had. Next cruise I will be getting appropriate coverage from another company that is a specific cruise company.
