Muster Drill

It would be really tight if 3,000 people stood on the deck. But, it would be nice to know where and what lifeboat to go to. I wonder if there is enough boats for everyone! :eek:

Stupid ??: When your muster drill starts, do you have to wear the PDF from your cabin to your assigned location? :o

You are asked to CARRRY your PFD to your muster station , then they explain how to wear it at which time they ask you to try it on. After it has been tried on you are then asked to CARRY it back to your cabin. You will have plenty of time to go to the sailaway.:D

I just find it humorous that for instance on a cruise to the caribbean people would be uncomfortable outdoors in nyc or fl for 15-20 mins during a muster drill.

I hear you, Laura. Whether the muster takes place on deck or indoors does not matter.

 

The real question is where is the best place to meet in case of a real emergency. At the time of an emergency, the weather might be terrible: rough seas, heavy rain, whatever. IMHO, meeting under cover is safer and can be much more comfortable for everyone.

It's amazing that this has turned controversial. Oh well. Just FYI ... in an emergency, you would report to the same lounge, etc. where you had your muster drill. From there you would be told what to do. You'd be escorted to the lifeboats if they were needed.

I understand your POV and I can understand people with health problems/elderly/etc. preferring to be indoors.

I was not trying to make this into a huge controversy. Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinions and I respect that.

 

Out of curiosity...

If for some reason, if you are unable to get to your specific lounge in case of an emergency are you told an alternate meeting place?

ps my favorite muster drill occured on HAL when I was a teenager...in those days it was master and miss or misses __________.

It was very comical when the Bates were late and Mr. was called a few times...........:o....before the officer calling him figured out why there were so many chuckles...

Somehow I prefer the outdoors near your lifeboat muster drill...but that is just me...I want to know where I am going in an emergency..which lifeboat station, etc. Again my preference...

Princess gives two reasons for going to an inside lounge in case of emergency.

 

First, In the unlikely event that you would need to use the lifeboats, it may be hours between the start of the emergency and the time to get on the lifeboats. Much better to spend that time inside than out on the deck in whatever weather.

 

Second, in case it is necessary to use the lifeboats, some may not be able to be utilized because of the type of emergency. Gathering inside means that the Princess staff can bring you to the actual lifeboats to be used instead of you being gathered at one that cannot be utilized.

 

Thus, you will know where to go in case of emergency, the same lounge that you went to for the muster drill.

The way Princess does the lifeboat drill is actually the safest and most comfortable IMO. Other cruise lines should do it the same way. I wish the drills only lasted 15-20 min.

 

Lately, I don't leave my room right away, because of the horrible heat and having to stand in the back because I'm tall. Even so lots of people come later than I do.

 

I have cruised 16 times on 6 different cruise lines. Disney took the longest - outside in the sun on a hot, humid day in June, I nearly collapsed. My daughter had to hold me up and a cruise staff member helped me.

Don't worry about it, Laura. Just because somebody said it was controversial doesn't make it so. I think we've been having a very nice exchange of ideas, nothing more. Some people need to lighten up on the rhetoric.
