San Diego to LAX

It's early but it appears we will have a better change of flying out of LAX than San Diego using our FF points. Any information on getting from San Diego to LAX other than renting a vehicle would be appreciated.

Amtrak is fine as far as going to Union Station, but Union Station to LAX is a long time consuming trip if traffic is bad. Have you considered flying out of SAN to LAX (there is frequent commuter service) and connecting with your LAX/home city flight? You can check your luggage right through from SAN:)

Flying between San Diego and LAX is VERY EXPENSIVE!!! I would recommend either taking the train as above (if you have the time...keep in mind the train often runs late) or renting a one-way car. There are no direct buses or shuttles between the two airports (used to be, but no longer).

Are you really dead set against driving? LAX is easy to get to by car from San Diego and is the cheaper than a shuttle service. If you are willing to spend around $300 you can probably get a sedan car or mini van. The car rental with gas is likely to be around $80-100 with gas for an intermediate sized car

Using the train to get to LAX would be an incredible pain - especially with luggage - and time consuming. Also the train is no real bargain. Train tickets from San Diego to LA are now $34 one way for unreserved coach. Shuttle tickets from Union Station to LAX are cheap - $5?. Still this is getting close to the car rental price for 2 passengers. Also, the time on the train/shuttle would likely be 4 hours compared to 2 hours max in the car.
