What not to miss on the Norwegian Sun

We are very excited to be sailing on the Sun in August for the first time. In fact, this is our first cruise.

We have a cabin with a Balcony on Deck 8.

What are your favorite things about the Sun, things not to miss and tips on having a great cruise to Alaska.

Thanks in advance.:)

Haven't been to Alaska - but have certainly been on the Sun - Lovely ship & great crew. The "must" list for me is the Il Adiago (Italian restaurant) great atmosphere and fantastic food. And don't forget to vist La Rambles for the tapas!! The best we've had on any ship so far :) We had sailed the Sun for our first NCL cruise as well and it paved the way for us wanting more. ;) Enjoy

I agree WHOLEHEARDEDLY with Vanina's two suggestions - at Il Adagio, the zillion garlic clove dish is very tasty as is the veal chop. At Las Ramblas, the sangria if great although overpriced and I just loved the marinated goat cheese.

I will throw a third recommendation of Adagio, and add Le Bistro if you like French food and don't mind paying for the specialties. Again, Las Ramblas is great - especially having an after dinner drink listening to Greg Guess.

Treat yourself to a Romance package $79.. totally worth it. We get it every time we cruise NCL.

Canapés delivered to your stateroom one evening

Honeymooners' Champagne and Cake party

Romantic dinner for two in Bistro with a complimentary bottle of wine

The Sun is an interseting ship. Sometimes it is tricky to find your way around, but I loved it. One of my favourite ships.

I loved the Sun. Il Adagio was also my favorite restaurant. We ate there twice and had a great meal each time.

The crew on the Sun was fantastic - so friendly. And the ship is spotless.

I envy you. I can't wait until I sail the Sun again.

Check out the Sports Bar too, they have a little menu (fish & chips, chicken wings, chili, etc...all very good).

Hubs and I were on the Sun back in Feb., it was our 2nd cruise and the best ship yet! Can't wait to sail on the Sun again.

Have fun and enjoy!

What's not to love about the Sun? You are sailing on a great ship with the best crew on the water! I really liked the sushi bar so you should give it a try. Even though there is an extra charge, I would have paid much much more if I'd ordered the same abundant spread on land. I love sushi!

We loved the Sun. I remember the food, both speciality restaurants and main venues, being good food.. but to be honest.. what I remember the most... the Hamburgers in the little outdoor cafe at the Aft of the ship. OMG.. those were the BEST hamburgers. I literally had to have one a day..AT LEAST one a day. And believe it or not, I lost 13lbs on that cruise.. LOL..

As many have said already, the staff are as good as you will find anywhere. We just loved sailing on the Sun. Our suite was the best suite we have ever had (AD or AC Aft, sorry I can't remember which designation it was). I do remember being a little disappointed with the bulters a little bit, as we supposedly had two but only met one. Oh well.. that just meant one less to tip.. LOL.. The casino was very good, had pretty loose slots and a GREAT casino staff.

I hope you have a blast on your cruise and it is a great memory for you as it has been for us.

Terry, I recall you had an AC I think it was 9276.

Based on your recommendation I tried to get that for my next cruise in 02/09 but I ended up with the mirror image in 9076.

I can't wait.

I hope I enjoy the casino as much. Per your earlier post, I have been to Vegas a million times (my grandparents lived there until they died - my uncle still does - he was a Baccarat dealer at Caesar's for over 40 years - he's retired now). I have never been to Tahoe or Reno. Might need to try!

Thanks for all your tips and good wishes.

Does anyone know the names of the Restaurants that don't have an extra charge on the Sun? We have paid quite a bit on the excursions and for a holiday to Europe recently, so we are going to try to economize a bit.

Pacific Heights doesn't have a surcharge. I think all the other specialty restaurants cost extra. But they do offer 1/2 price dining at many - usually early or late seating - so if you want to try them but do it more reasonably, that's an option.

Just arrived home after an Alaska Cruise on the sun. Fab ship great staff. Had a wonderful time. Will write a review in the next couple of days.

I would recommend Le Bristo as the food and service was excellent well worth the extra. The view as you sail whist enjoying a meal is breathtaking. I would recommend the evening you leave Tracy arm ( or Endicott arm ) as we were iced out of the former.

As for excursions the duck tour in Ketickan is good value as is the lumberjack show. In Junneau you must go Whale watching 9 but did get to see a few whales from the ship). The Whitehorse train ride goes through amazing scenery but was expensive.

Hope this helps. Any other questions I will be happy to try and answer. I would do the trip again tommorrow enjoy it.

Yes yes yes to Pacific Heights. I had dinner there one night and it was a very nice restaurant with very good food. You'll probably need reservations, but I was lucky enough to get right in without a reservation when I went for an early dinner around 5:30...and I got a window table.:) Lucky night for me there but I don't remember the casino being as good to me that evening.

I liked the gym classes on the Sun, but unfortuately, one of the instructors was leaving. I'm an early riser and it was a good way to start the day. There were a lot of bored teens and tweens due to the weather closing the pool and sports deck, but you won't have that problem in Sept. I think my only complaint was that the ship was a little too crowded. Once again, it was mid summer and prime time for families. So cabins that usually filled in with couples were now filled with families. Sept. will be more adults.

Walk around the promenade deck before or after dinner. That is where we saw most of the ocean wild life. It can be cold so dress warmly.

It was spotless, the cabin was equal in size to any other cruise line, I had a problem and engineering was there immediately.

The library has a pot of coffee and tea available. It was a nice spot to relax in quite with a cup of tea.

Edited because I forgot to mention the shows are very good. Don't miss the professional entertainment.

Enjoy.

Vanina, the two main restaurants are the Four Seasons (smaller) and the Seven Seas. They're both really good.

We also LOVED Il Adagio (are we now up to 6 raves about it). It's beautiful, in addition to the great food.

The Great Outdoors Cafe, right outside the buffet, was our favorite place to sit and people watch. The Windjammer Lounge is really nice when someone is playing the piano.

We've been on the Sun three times (one of those was to Alaska), and it remains one of my favorite ships. It's the perfect size.

The two main restaurants: Four Seasons and Seven Seas.

The buffet: Garden Cafe (and its outdoors offshoot, the Great Outdoor Cafe).

The tapas bar: Las Ramblas.

The "healthy eating" speciality restaurant: Pacific Heights.

And I think that the snacks in the sports bar are no extra charge, too.
