We did the Cruisetour 17N which took us to Prudhoe Bay and back. This first part will be about our cruise. We had a wonderful time overall. Alaska is a awe inspiring landscape filled with amazing wildlife. We loved our honeymoon. Our land portion was also great, but I'll write about that later.

Sunday, July 20th – Travel to Vancouver, Canada

Princess Transfer picked us up at the airport and took us to our hotel, The Four Seasons Vancouver. This was so easy and convient. The hotel was wonderful and the bed was the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in!

Monday, July 21st – Board Coral Princess in Vancouver

Princess transferred our bags and we walked to the ship. We got our cruise cards at the hotel so boarding the ship was easy. I wish we would have stopped to pick up flowers at the stand on the street, but we didn’t. There wasn’t much of a line to check in and they seemed very organized. We even boarded a little before 12. After going to our room to check it out we began to explore the ship. We had lunch in HC since the dining rooms seemed closed and I didn’t want to start our honeymoon forcing our way into the dining room.

We went to dinner early in the anytime dining room and we had OK wait staff and food. We were glad that we went early, since the line was so long when we left. We made reservations for the next night

Tuesday, July 22nd – At Sea

We spent the day wondering around the ship. Found the front open balcony forward on deck 10 that was recommended here and had it to ourselves most of the trip. It was wonderful and we felt like we were alone on the ship as we sailed. We also went to the naturalist’s presentations. We enjoy learning new things together, so this was right up our alley.

Went to the dining room for lunch and found it to be much better than HC. This was the first formal night. We enjoyed dressing up. We had reserved a table for 2 and had a great waiter, Ronald at table 52. He was new to the Coral but not to Princess and went out of his way to make sure we were happy. We booked his table for each night but only got it a few more times. He was great.

We didn’t do much of the on board activities or night life, so I can’t comment on that. We spent a lot of time on our balcony. At night we enjoyed quiet nights in our room after a few nice dances in the Wheelhouse Bar. This was a romantic way to end each night before retiring to our room. Remember this was our honeymoon and we enjoyed being aloneJ

Wednesday, July 23rd – Ketchikan, Alaska

We docked at 6:30AM and left at 2:00PM

We did the Misty Fjords Wilderness Cruise & Flight that we booked through Princess. It was nice. The weather was beautiful. We saw seals and eagles. The size of the eagle’s nest was impressive. We spent the entire cruise part out on the top deck. We were glad that we took a great camera and lens as well as good binoculars. We flew back on a sea plane and I got to sit in the front seat! It was beautiful! The sea plane landed right in front of our ship. We purchased a t-shirt while waiting for the bus back to the ship. We should have walked but we didn’t realize how close we were. We didn’t see much of the town after that.

Thursday, July 24th – Juneau, Alaska

Spent the morning walking around the town. It rained/drizzled all day. Thank goodness for rain jackets and pants. We walked to the capital building. We didn’t care for the shopping/tourist part of town. We went back to the ship for lunch and to get ready for our Helicopter Glacier Trek (booked through Princess). I was scared about doing this excursion and with the weather I was even more uneasy. But this is what we wanted to do and I didn’t want to let my new hubby down so I didn’t show that I was scared. Well this excursion turned out to be the most awe inspiring thing I have ever done. The helicopter ride was neat but bumpy. Hiking on the glacier was amazing! This company did an outstanding job. There were 9 people in our group and 2 guides. We got to hike for 2 hours. The completely outfitted us. Even though it rained the entire time no one cared, how could you when you were surrounded by the magic of the glacier. I can’t recommend this trip enough. It was the best! I just wish our pictures showed the beauty but it was nearly impossible to capture. This was truly nature at it’s best and we were in the middle of it all alone!

Friday, July 25th – Skagway, Alaska

Today we went into the Yukon – Chilkoot Charters 7 hour Yukon Bus and Rail excursion. We booked this privately and were so happy we did. We had the last rail car that was very empty, which made for great photo ops. Our mini bus met us at the end of the train ride and we went into the Yukon. The scenery was beautiful and Emerald Lake was stunning. I met up with umpire from this board on the mini bus portion. It was neat to meet someone from CC.

Saturday, July 26th – Glacier Bay Scenic Cruising 6:00AM – 3:00PM

The rain continued for most of the day. It was cold too. Hot Chocolate was our friendJ We spent most of the day forward on deck 10 taking in the sites. Alaska never stopped surprising us with her beauty. We went to listen to the park ranger’s presentation and it was very good.

Sunday, July 27th - College Fjord Scenic Cruising 5:30PM – 8:30PM

We did some laundry today to prepare for our second leg – the land tour. We only waited a few minutes for a washer, but had to wait over 30 minutes for a dryer. The coin machine worked and it was easy to get things done.

College Fjord was my favorite day of sailing. The sea otters and whales were so much fun to watch and again the beauty of nature took our breath away. Again we were forward on deck 10. This was the deck our cabin was on and even though we had a beautiful big balcony it was nice to be at the front of the ship with an un obstructed view with very few people. There was a researcher on the bow counting wild life and he would yell up to us when he saw something. This was a great help. Most times we spotted it before our naturalist did because of him.

While we sailed out we ordered champagne and choc covered strawberries from room service. We sat on our balcony writing the thank you cards for our wedding enjoying the most beautiful place on earth. It was truly perfect.

The ship was great! It was easy to find our way around. We loved being on deck 10 in a BA balcony room. Our room steward was good and we appreciated him. He even got my name changed on our door to my new married name. The name card had wedding bells on it. The balloons 'Just Married' placed outside our door always made us smile (and kiss). It was nice. Our room was clean and well laid out. We loved sleeping with the balcony door open. It was so nice to listen to the water and enjoy the landscape at all hours of the night. We were very happy with our ta's pick of a room.

The food was OK as was the service. The exception was our favorite waiter Ronald at table 52 in the anytime dinning room. He was wonderful! He was everything good in a waiter we could have wanted. We appreciate all that he did to make our nights with him so special. We only wish we could have had him each night, but we were unable to get his table every night.

Our excursions were all wonderful. I had gifted my husband the money to cover the excursions and most of the expenses prior to the trip in OBC. It was nice to only owe under $200 on the last day. It made leaving the ship nice and the best part is that I it is all done being paid for. I have no cc charges to regret later.

I was so happy I had read up here and learned so much! Thank you to all of you who answered my endless questions and to those who offered their thoughts and comments. You all helped to make this trip perfect.

Best tips: forward open balcony on deck 10, bring hot chocolate packets and order hot water from room service, excursion information, ask for robes, egg crates and a top sheet when you first arrive, get a balcony on deck 10, how to make reservations for dinner, bring the best camera, lens and binoculars you can get your hands on and most importantly focus on the positive aspects and enjoy the trip. And enjoy we did. We went to Alaska to see Alaska in all it's beauty. It rained and was cold for most of our trip but it didn't matter. After all, isn't that part of Alaska? We know know why many of you keep going back. Maybe we will too when the kids are a little older and my daughter out grows her food allergies. Alaska's beauty does get into your blood!

Fran - The cabin was nice. The bed was on the hard side and we could definitely feel the lump where the 2 beds joined together. This was the reason that we asked for the egg crate. We had plenty of room in our cabin. We took 5 suitcases. My husband loving tells everyone only 1 was his and it was one of the smaller ones. We stored a few under the bed and the rest in the closet. We found the closet to be the perfect size to have our larger suitcases stand up in the back. There were a lot of hangers in our closet. Maybe we lucked out. We had at least 25. There was a cabinet with shelves next to the closet. We liked the easy of having everything right there. The safe in the closet came in handy for storing the large lens for our camera and our passports. I do wish it was a little larger to get all the camera equipment in, but it was good for the things we really wanted to protect.

The bathroom was small, but better than I thought after reading some comments here. The shower was tiny but did the job. The curtain was weighted in our room and even though the door was open it never wanted to stick to us. We basically left the bathroom door open the entire cruise because it made the bathroom feel bigger. There were 3 shelves where my husband stored his shaving things. We took our own liquid soap for hand washing and that stayed on the counter. We always travel with our landsend bathroom bag. We hung it on the bathroom door, just like we do in hotels and b&bs. It holds our bathroom needs, my make-up and a small hair dryer. We never unpack it but just replace what we use, so we are always ready to get away for the weekend. The bathroom worked out well for us.

We took along an extention cord. My husband found a great light weight one that had the 3 prong outlets. We kept it plugged in at the desk for my hairdryer, cell phone and camera charger. We were glad that we had it. And we used it in every hotel room. My DH never unplugged the chargers from it and just plugged it in to our next hotel each night. It was so easy that when we got home my DH kept it in our carryon that we use to store our travel things for our next trip.

We loved being able to lay in bed and look out the window. It didn't seem that many people used their balcony's. Maybe it was because it was colder. This was to our advantage, because we left our door open a lot when we were in our cabin and enjoyed the fresh air and the sounds.

The balcony was spacious and easily accomidated the 4 chairs and table.

We had the stewart store our bedspread for the week, so it gave us more room. We also asked for top sheets to be placed on our bed. And extra towels.

There was a small fridge. We stored the items the ship had stocked in there in the desk drawer and used it for our own drinks. We told the stewert, so we didn't get charged for the drinks. It worked fine for us.

I did wipe the entire cabin down with the clorax wipes when we first arrived. It made me feel better to know that it was all freshly cleaned. Not to say that the cabin looked bad, because it didn't. It just made me feel better.

The room was great and we had plenty of room. I do think it would be tight with 4 people.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

But always remember we are new to cruising and don't have anything to compare it to. All we can say is that it worked out great for us and our needs.

We boarded the Coral Princess the day you disembarked. Have sailed on the Coral before and love that class of ship. Were you on the train to McKinley Lodge? If so, we waved at all of you as we got on the train to go to the ship!

Can't wait to hear about Prudhoe Bay, we want to do that in 2010.

Thank you for the well written review. We were on the Coral this past may for a B2B2B and have been on her a total of 5 times and I consider the Coral/Island ships the best in the fleet.

Monday, July 29th – Disembark the Ship in Whittier and travel to Anchorage

Portage Glacier Cruise & Wildlife Center was an extra trip that we decided to take. I really wanted to go to the Wildlife Center after reading about it here. After disembarking with no problems, we boarded a bus driven by a young Holland American driver. She tried to make the tunnel out of Whittier, but just missed it. We sat and waited at the tunnel for the next opening.

She was a local and just finished college. She told us all about growing up in the Anchorage area. It was nice hearing her stories and you could tell how proud she was of Alaska and her life.

After the tunnel opened, we did to Portage Glacier Cruise. It was OK. Not nearly as impressive as everything else we had seen. The Wildlife Center was great. We only had 20 minutes and we enjoyed seeing the animals especially the baby moose and black bear. I could have spent more time there.

Our drive took us into Anchorage and told us where to eat/shop before dropping us off at the hotel. We stayed at the Captain Cook and again had a wonderful experience and room.

Tuesday, July 29th – Leave Anchorage and Fly to Prudhoe Bay ( Deadhorse), Alaska

We woke up early and did some shopping, before heading to the airport. The weather was great and it was so nice to see the sun. We took the 1:42 Alaska Airlines flight from Anchorage to Deadhorse. The mountain was clouded in. Really, everything was clouded in the entire flight, but the plane was very nice. The pilot gave us the weather – yes more rain but said there was snow in the forecast for the next dayJ

Princess took care of collecting our bags and they were taken over to the Inn by fork lift in a wooden crate. Remember if you go here it is a working town. The Arctic Caribou Inn (ATCO permafrost trailers) is not the Four Seasons! It has more charm. The workers could not have been nicer. The rooms were clean. We ate dinner with the oil field workers. Some had just come from work and were still muddy others relaxing during their time off. But this was Alaska and what we had come to experience.

We then gathered in the tour room at the Inn to watch a short view about the oil field operations and to have our ID's checked prior to boarding the tour bus. Since it was rainy and muddy, our views were limited, but we did get the general idea of what was around. We stopped at the Arctic Ocean and everyone got off even though it was cold and rainy. We were determined to take the Arctic plunge, so after we checked things out we were off to the bus to shed our clothes and done our bathing suits. Boy, was it cold! We were in and out fast, but were happy that we did it together. No one else in our group did it.

Back at the Inn we listened to native Eskimos give a presentation about our home land. It was interesting. They have had many experiences and have watched their village and people change through the years. They made us realize the struggles that they have gone though.

Back at the room we cuddled together on the single bed and it wasn't that bad.

Wednesday, July 30th – Motorcoach: Prudhoe Bay to Coldfoot 8:30AM to 5:30PM

We departed at @8:30 for our trip down the Daulton Highway. We were the first to the bus and got front seats. It was still rainy so the road was muddy and bumpy! The windows quickly became covered in mud and you couldn't see out the driver's side windows. Our driver stopped often to attempt to wash the windows but they quickly became muddy again. This is a rough road in the mud! Our bus stopped each time we saw wild life and we often backed up if we missed it. We saw snow falling in the distance on the range. It was exciting to know that we would experience snow in July! The snow stayed off the road for us but fell enough that we could make some snowballs. What a thrill to throw snowballs in the middle of the summer.

The road was interesting. The sites varied. Wildlife was not as abundant as we had hoped, but still true Alaska. The mountains covered in the first blanket of snow they have seen in a while gave this land a magical glow. We were thrilled to be a part of it.

Be prepared for a trip like this. Limited port-a-pots along the way, poor road conditions, and a long, long drive. We loved our trip, but we also read up on what we would be doing.

On thing that really surprised us was how many motor cycles and bikers we saw on the road or camping in the middle of nowhere. Now that seemed too extreme for many of us to grasp.

Spent the night at Coldfoot's Slate Creek Inn. This was essentially a truck stop with a place to eat and a post office. The Inn's hallway smelled a little of fuel, however the room was fine. Keep in mind if you go here you have your own bathroom and it is a step above camping. Yes, single beds are all that they have here as well. My DH and I enjoy camping and knew where we were going from researching, so we enjoyed ourselves. We went to the rangers program at the visitor's center across the Daulton. It was wonderful. He showed us all of his gear for patrolling the national park when it is 60 below. He is very experienced and has spent up to 31 days alone in the park in the middle of winter. His guy is so interesting. We highly recommend this program and it was free :) Some on our tour went by plane to a village which they said was wonderful. We also took a walk around the area and enjoyed watching the birds in the pond. It was interesting to see all the trucks come in loaded up with supplies for Prudhoe Bay.

Thursday, July 31th – Motorcoach: Coldfoot to Fairbanks

We left at 8am for our ride to Fairbanks. We sat further back in the bus and just enjoyed holding hands as we drove through a lot of burnt forest. We didn't see any wildlife on our drive into Fairbanks. We did stop for a great burger at The Hot Spot for lunch. The burger was very big and very good. It was a neat lunch spot. Stopping at the Arctic Circle was also a fun thing to do.

Stayed at the Fairbanks Princess Riverside Lodge! We were given our room key as we got off the bus. After going up the elevator we couldn't find our room number. It just seemed to skip right over our number. Then my DH smiled and put the key in the door that had the number before ours and after ours and it opened to the most amazing suite I had ever seen! I was shocked! This place was beautiful with a full kitchen, fire place, 2 full baths, king bed and the largest jetted tub I had ever been in! Needless to say, after 2 long days on the haul road and 2 nights in twin beds we were thrilled. Princess made us feel like a king and queen! We had a quick dinner down stairs and enjoyed our suite. (With 2 kids and a dog we won’t be in one like this again for a very long time!) Thank you Princess! You really outdid yourselves with this room!

The next morning it was raining and we did the paddle boat ride. The river had overflowed its banks from all the rain. We went to an Indian Village down the river and saw a float plane take off and land. While the ride was nice, all I could think of was we could have spent some the morning enjoying that tub instead of hanging out in the rain for another day. Really, I loved that room. Princess's Fairbanks Lodge was beautiful!

Friday, Aug. 1st – Travel from Fairbanks to Denali

After the River Boat Discovery Tour we went into Fairbanks for lunch by motorcoach. We ate at a cute little place but I can't remember the name. It was a block off of the visitor's center. Our bus picked us up after an hour and we drove off to Denali. The ride was uneventful. We were delayed for about 30 minutes for an over sized load coming across the bridge on its way up the Daulton highway. Seeing the massive load being hauled and pushed by several trucks was the highlight of the trip.

We arrived at the Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge. We stayed in the Canyon section. As my husband said it was like a motel 8. The rooms and bathrooms were tight. We had 2 full beds. We were spoiled at Fairbanks. Many in our group commented that they didn't think the accommodations here lived up to Princess's hype of this lodge. We were going to try and do a whitewater rafting trip, but the one we wanted was canceled due to the amount of rain that had fallen. We went to subway across the street for dinner and to get sandwiches for the next day. We kept them on ice in our hotel room over night and they were great the next day. We retired to our room early.

Saturday, Aug. 2st – Denali

Tundra Wilderness Tour 6:50AM! My DH went down to get in line at 6 because we wanted to sit in the front of the bus. Well, it kind of worked. The bus stopped at another hotel first and was more than 1/2 full when it got to us. But, both front seats only had 1 person each in them, so we grabbed the 2 inside seats. This wound up working out great, because we got great pictures of wildlife from both sides of the bus! We saw many fox pups, 8 bears, moose, caribou, sheep and many other assorted animals on our journey. It was great! Then we hit the jackpot because the mountain was out with both peaks towering beautifully into the sky which meant that we got to go 8 more miles into the park before we had to turn back. Our tour was wonderful. We thought about jumping off the bus and taking a shuttle all the way in, but decided we wanted to head back to the room and take a nap (OK, I know lame, but it was our honeymoon!) We heard later that the bugs were bad and the mountain covered over, so we didn't feel that bad.

Sunday, Aug. 3rd – Denali to Anchorage

We woke up early to take the shuttle to the park. We wanted to do the dog sled demo. We were glad we did. After it was over we wished that we would have spent some time walking in the park. In reflection we wish that we would have taken a shuttle in the first night and walked some trails. But Alaska is now in our blood, too and we know we will be back.

We took the Princess Domed rail cars to Anchorage. It was a slow, relaxing ride. We had lunch in the dining car just to say we ate on the train. The food was good. We enjoyed chatting with the people who were on the trip with us, knowing that this would be the last time we saw them. We were lucky to have spent the 7 days on land with such a nice group of people. There is something special that we will remember about each one of them. After being on a bus and in close quarters for so many days we became a group of friends.

We ended our trip by staying again at the Captain Cook Hotel. We were sad that our honeymoon was coming to an end and happy to be going home to our kids and dog to begin our lives together as a family. Our trip was wonderful. I would recommend it to anyone who wanted to see off beat Alaska and had some adventure in them. Princess made our trip easy. We never had to worry about our luggage or our next adventure. Our bus drivers for the most part were outstanding and very informative. Princess was very organized and professional. We were happy we went with them. If we did it again, I would like to go by RV. I am now drawn to see the small out of the way towns of Alaska. I don't know if I'll ever get all the way up the Daulton again, but it was truly a trip of a lifetime.

Sorry if this got too long. We loved Alaska!
