Smoking? in Cabins

It looked commercial to me. Sqaure rugged box in a metal housing. Definately nothing like an ionzer you'd see in retail.

Sounds like the commercial model. If it was, there should have been a warning label on it. If so, it really shouldn't have been left in the cabin when you were there to prevent the guest from turning the machine on in spite of any warning label. And, they should have restricted access to the cabin when in operation.

On One Of Our Cruises We Had A Balcony Room That Smelled So Bad We Literaly Could Not Go In. Our Cabin Steward Cleaned The Carpet 3 Times. I Could Not Believe That Someone Would Get A Room With A Balcony And Not Open The Door..........go Figure...in The End They Really Did A Good Job And We Tipped Her For All The Exta Work..........

Sorry, but that is NOT always the case.

We were on the Sky a couple weeks ago and both of our cabins REEKED of stale smoke. They brought in the heavy duty ionizers, which remained in our cabin the entire weekend and did a pretty good job, however, some odor was still present when we disembarked 3 days later.

We've noticed the stale smoke odor in the past in other cabins, but nothing like what we endured on the Sky. Usually you'll be OK, but not always. Whatever you do, do not hesitate to call reception for an ionizer if you smell stale smoke in your cabin.

Ok let me change that to USUALLY it's gone. In our experience it has always been gone. If the smell is still in the air then someone hasn't done their job properly. Mind, with the crew/room steward ratio becoming smaller it will likely start hearing about it happening more often.

Check around places like Walgreens, CVS, etc.

Charlie

I like Walgreens - when I'm visiting the States ;) Will check it out at local Walmart etc. one never knows. Thanks for the quick reply.

When travelling we usually take a small size Febreze airfreshener - it helps a lot with hotel rooms etc.

Question: So if you are allergic to cigarette smoke does that mean you are allegric to the smell of it or the actual smoke in the air?

People aren't allergic to cigarette smoke. Smoke is an irritant, not an allergen. Symptoms are very similar to other respiratory allergies and smoke can in fact exacerbate actual allergies. However, people aren't allergic to the smoke itself. When I see people say that they are allergic to cigarette smoke it tells me they haven't actually been to a doctor to get a diagnosis (which is what you need to do to get a confirmation of an allergy).

How dare you bring reason, logic and sanity into this discussion? Are you looking for a fight???

You are a lovely voice in the wilderness.......

:o I must admit - that was my understanding as well.

What is used most of the time is a product called Ozium to rid the cabin of smoke. I bought some myself to use at home to eliminate odors, it does a fantastic job.

This stuff is THE BOMB. Last year during a flood some water got into my airconditioner intake vent on my car. Within a few days the car smelled of mold. We got some of that Ozium at Walgreen at the recomendation of the mechanic we trust and IT WORKED LIKE MAGIC. It took a few applications but it worked. I am telling you, the lemon scented one I swear is addictive. I would spray that in that intake vent and it always put me in the best of moods. LOL. I thought I was going to be one of those junkies that spray stuff in bags and inhale it, but reason finally took over with me. LOL

No kidding...

Many people should "live" in a "cemetery"..if that is what they call "living"....by land or sea.

I'm not ready for the cemetery....give me the allergies, smoke, bad manners, loud people, etc., anyday. They do create many laughs..as I'm sure I have been guilty of contributing to in the past...no regrets :-(

Never a problem on NCL with any of the above "cronies" :-)

So looking forward to enjoying an NCL cruise.....in the near future :-(

I was on the Spirit and the Gem within a year of each other (spring 2007 and sprind 2008) and never noticed a smoke smell once. I really had no idea you could smoke in the cabins on all the ships until I read this thread, I thought it was just on the Majesty.

I sailed on the Majesty a couple of weeks ago and immediately was hit by the smell in the hallways and our state room. The whole place, very faintly in some areas and stronger in others, smelled of old smoke. I noticed it each and every time I came on board.

I would not say I'm extremely sensitive or "allergic," either. No, I do not like the smell of smoke, but I'm realistic about it and know that people do indeed smoke. If someone was smoking near me and it was bothering me, I would move to another area. I think I'm fairly reasonable about it, but this was just out of control.

I think the problem is compounded by there being no balconies on the ship and no way to open the windows, as is standard.

Yuck. Yuck. Yuck.

We just returned from the Majesty and our cabin did not smell of smoke. The only thing we found that did have a slight odor was the hairdryer in the bathroom when it ran for an extended time. In the hallways, you could smell quite a bit of smoke, especially since the cabins did not have balconies but we didn't notice that in our cabin. I agree, they do a very nice job of freshening the cabins for the next guests.

Both my husband and I are very sensitive to smoke. Our balcony cabin on the Star, #10092, last week did not smell of smoke at all. The balcony, however, was awful. It seemed every time we found a moment to relax and enjoy the amazing views and incredible weather our trip offered, someone started smoking on their own balcony. I understand how this can be a sore subject, as all of us paid for the luxury of a balcony, I just wish there was some way to contain it. And, of course some of us cruisers want specific cabins, so it's difficult to designate certain balcony staterooms as non-smoking.

I know that this is a sore subject, but I wish something could be done about the balconies also.

Add to packing list: A small fan (for the balcony).

My mother smoked for 30 years. 3 packs a day. Even in the shower. She quit in the 80's. Reformed smokers are the worst. She now hates smoke. Once our cabin reeked when we embarked. We called the front desk and they had the stewards visit. They worked their magic and it was fine.

I would go for smoking on one side and no smoking on the other.....side of the ship. The captain may not like the weight distribution but that's his problem.

Seriously, there should be no smoking in the cabins. If I want a smoke I go out onto my balcony. So to avoid a constant B-fest why not say smokers to the right of the ship and those that don't, go to the left.

I am a smoker, dont smoke in the cabin either but I did smoke on the balcony.

I have to say, I cruised several times and the only time I smelled smoke was our cruise a few weeks ago, I think it might have been from an inside stateroom, you were able to smell it in the hall.

While sailing the smoke subsides so quickly on the balcony Im not sure how it

bothers others, I guess a non smoker could only explain this...

Actually I'm trying to quit, one day at a time. I am 6 days smoke free as of today.

Congrats on being smoke free. As a smoker I know how hard that is..

I have to say as much as we smoke, we can't stand to walk down the hallway when someone has been smoking in their cabin and it has bled into the hallway.. Nothing worse than the smell of stale smoke. Sometimes the casino even gets too smokey for us.

As far as smoking on the balcony, we do. But we try to be courteous to those with a balcony near us. We always get Aft suites, so hopefully we don't effect too many people. At this point all we can do is try to be aware of each other.. smokers and non smokers and try to "share the excitement" of having a balcony.
