thefamilycruisers Posted August 31, 2008 #1 Share Posted August 31, 2008 Is there such a thing? We are cruising at Christmas and have a fair amt of OBC from our booking. This is the first time we will have OBC - not sure what I am going to use it for...gratuities, drinks, maybe spa - if I have credit left over, what happens to it? Is it use it or lose it? Thanks. I believe that if you have left over OBC they credit your credit card. I also think that you can go to the purser's desk and take cash out (from your credit) to use on the ship. If I am wrong, I'm sure someone will come along and make it right.
firefly333 Posted August 31, 2008 #3 Share Posted August 31, 2008 It depends on what the OBC is for. Some has to be used up on the cruise, some you can get refunded. Since we dont know what the OBC was given for, there isnt a definitive answer. For instance if it was given for a price drop or from the TA to book then you have to use it up. Wait until you are onboard and then book your excursions, so the money comes from the OBC instead of being charged to your credit card. (depends on the cruiseline how its done, Princess let us book ahead of time but not bill us until the cruise on our account. Excursions can eat a lot of money up fast. Tips can come from OBC, even though it usually says they cant.
paul929207 Posted August 31, 2008 #4 Share Posted August 31, 2008 If yu have too much OBC (is there such a thing??), just order a nicer bottle of wine with dinner.
EGG Posted September 1, 2008 #5 Share Posted September 1, 2008 We had excess OBC on our RCL cruise. We took it out as cash on the last day of the cruise (the only day you could do this). You can also take money out from the casino but you are really supposed to use it to gamble. A few ships have a 3% charge if you don't gamble. buffy4454 Posted September 1, 2008 #6 Share Posted September 1, 2008 On our last cruise my DH and I knew we had onboard credit, however, on the day before our last we got a bill and found out we had underestimated. We spent quite some time on our last night trying to spend $. Our SBC was promotional so we could not take it back with us. We received $300 for booking a suite and using our Am Ex Platinum card, $50 for booking this cruise while on a prior cruise and we thought $100 for having CCL stock. We were happily surprised to find $650 credit. We still don't know why.

We are in a similiar situation - and certainly don't want to lose the value but doubt we will spend that much on the ship. I already know about the 3% - I thought that was charged whether you actually used the money in the casino or put it in your pocket. Please clarify.
flvol77 Posted September 1, 2008 #8 Share Posted September 1, 2008 Too much OBC - Our cruise in 35 days we have over 1000 dollars in OBC for two people on a 7 day cruise. (princess bumped our April cruise and took care of us) for two people that normally only spend $300 dollars at the most this is a ton of OBC for us. Princess told us they would just credit our CC if we had any left over OBC.
Krazy Kruizers Posted September 1, 2008 #9 Share Posted September 1, 2008 Extra shipboard credit?? Send it to me -- I know how to use it!!
Rare silentbob007 Posted September 1, 2008 #10 Share Posted September 1, 2008 If I've had extra, I've pulled it out in the casino. Even with a 3% charge, I'd rather have the cash than items or services that I didn't really want.
luv2swim Posted September 1, 2008 #11 Share Posted September 1, 2008 Extra OBC? Ahh, a girl can dream.
cruiserbryce Posted September 1, 2008 #12 Share Posted September 1, 2008 I believe its refunded to your cc but we have always used our obc quite easily...we charge gratuities to the on board account so that is usually enough to take care of the credit right away

You might be planning on gambling that evening and you take the cash out that afternoon. You can go put a few quarters in a slot machine and you are gambling. I have never heard of such a thing, no one has ever asked us if we are going to gamble with the cash we take out of our account. Any money remaining in our account is credited back to our credit card.:D
