Formal nights - Dress down after dinner?

It depends on where you want to go. If you want to go to the martini bar or something like then I would stay dressed as you were for dinner and your show. If you want on relax on one of the decks then I think the casual is fine. A good rule of thumb would be if you are in a secluded area or one with others dressed casualy then that is fine, but if you look around and everyone is dressed formally then either change or leave.

We stay in evening dress thoughout the evening. Celebrity requests that the dress code be adhered to except on the casual deck (pool, alternative casual dining). I have seen people turned away from the show that did not follow the evening dress code. Other times it did not matter. If you change you are taking a chance of not being admitted.

This is how Celebrity and RCI differ. We always stayed dressed on Celebrity and went to the show and the disco after. However on the Radiance this year

we noticed everyone going back to their rooms, changing and then going to the various bars. Very few stayed dressed up. We are easy just go with the flow.

I usually stay dressed all evening. My husband, on the other hand, hates to be dressed up. Living in FL, he is in shorts almost all year and feels that's how life should be when one is retired. He will get dressed for dinner (formal night suit) but as soon as dinner is over, he changes into something else. He is not alone, and I think that's where he got the idea. He goes to the casino after dinner, and I am not so sure that they are concerned with the attire----------I wish maybe they were, lol.

We always stay dressed too, but we have late dinner, then hit the show or nightclub, or both, so since we don't start out dressed until about 7 or 7:30, it's hardly worth it to go back & change! You see everything, but Celebrity DOES request you stay dressed in public areas!

My wife & I always stay dressed for the night. I think we might get in trouble being about the ship in our birthday suits. ;-)

But seriously, yes, we stay in what we were wearing to the dining room for the duration of the night. I personally don't see what the big deal is in wearing a tie for a few hours for only about half of the nights. The ship definately takes on a different feel at night and I feel that the dress is part of that. I remember once last year on Century where we spent the entire night in Michael's Club in our formal wear playing chess while I enjoyed a cigar & scotch....it was like we were living like millionaires for a couple of hours.

My personal thing is that you know before even stepping on to Celebrity what their policies are so there's no reason not to adher to it, if at least for the benefit of other passengers. But I sense that I'm getting in to choppy waters here so I'm going to call it quits for this post.

I would dress down from a tux to a jacket that I could remove if it got too hot in the theater. How about those in jeans that are let into a formal dinner, are these slobs immune? If some are offended by my last remark so be it!john taylor

Here's a new twist on this question.

On our last cruise we had late seating. One day we didn't leave port until 6pm. After dropping our things in our cabin we went down to the atrium to ask a question at guest relations. We were still in our shorts from the port and were looking pretty grubby. I felt a bit embarassed when the elevator doors opened and everyone else on there was dressed in formal wear.

What do the rest of you think about this situation. Should late seating people be in their formal wear after 6 when in public areas?

Absolutely not! It only makes sense that if you are late seating that you will be getting dressed later than the early seating people. If you were laying around in public areas it may be a bit different but you were basically on your way to get ready for the evening. I think sometimes we get caught up in the strictness of 'rules' when common sense should prevail.

:) Hi, I agree with the "common sense" aspect.....Here is a short story....I sailed HAL last month and I had late seating.....it was about 5:00 and I had a meeting with the Hotel Manager.....I took the steps and saw many people in their formal attire.....they had early seating.

I wasn't going to get "dressed in my evening attire" at 5pm......dinner was at 8.

If they thought I looked out of place, well so be it.

These kind of circumstances happen all the time. Don't worry too much about it.

Lois and Lyn and Norcal,

My common sense was that it was OK also. But I've seen folks on these boards almost come to blows over the question of whether you need to be dressed up all evening in public areas, and goodness knows I didn't want to offend anyone.

Sally, We always have late seating and there is no way I would dress formally in time for first seating. What would be the point of having late seating if you had to do that.

I just stay out of the public rooms such as the casino or the bars. That doesn't in my opinion include the hallways, guest relations, or the casual dining area to get a few pieces of sushi. Just think of all of the folks that like to be in the spa before dinner. I think common sense goes a long long way if you have it. :D
