nilsbyy Posted December 20, 2008 #1 Share Posted December 20, 2008 We're going shopping for our formal dresses (two each) today. I've been thinking --- my partner and I are exactly the same height, and only a few sizes apart, but we have different hair/eye colors. How coordinated should our dresses be to strike a good balance between not clashing with each other and not looking like the doublemint twins? They'll be similar in length and level of formality, but beyond that...is a similar color good or bad? Similar fabric? Aren't you folks glad all most of you have to coordinate with your date is the color of his tie?
bobandkelly Posted December 20, 2008 #2 Share Posted December 20, 2008 Your post brought me a giggle! thanks, I like alittle humor. I think that as long as your colors don't clash you will be fine. I wouldn't worry about being to matchy matchy. Buy dresses that you both love. I was going to say one go with a neutral and the other a color. That's what we do with the suit or tux. Black for the suit, color for my dress. I am sure whatever you decide you'll both have a wonderful cruise! Kelly
BroncosFan2010 Posted December 20, 2008 #3 Share Posted December 20, 2008 I would just pick something you each like, and not worry about clashing. If you want to look good in pictures, maybe pick the same color, but different shades of it. ex.. light blue, dark blue... and in different styles. Or pick colors that look good together... Black/white, red/blue, green/pink etc... Either way, you will have a good time.
bobandkelly Posted December 20, 2008 #4 Share Posted December 20, 2008 Ok maybe I should get up and do something rather than playing on cc all morning. Another thought on one dressing in a neutral. Would it look to matchy if the one wearing the neutral used a clutch or shoes in the color of the other ones dress? You said we match a tie so why not shoes/clutch? the_dylaness Posted December 20, 2008 #5 Share Posted December 20, 2008 Ooh what a fun question! I think so many options would really look great... 1. Same color dress but TOTALLY different styles 2. Others have suggested 1 neutral and one color- I like this too, but I think if you accessorize the neutral dress with the color from the other you should keep it to ONE item (i.e. if you have a blue dress and she has a white one, I wouldn't have her accessorize with a blue sash, blue shoes, blue purse, blue earrings...) 3. Opposites attract- one ALL black one ALL white? I saw a casual photo of a two-female couple I know dressed this way (not on purpose) and it was SO striking and beautiful. The caucasian one was wearing black capris/tank top and the Asian one was wearing white capris and short sleeved shirt. 4. I also like the two shades of a different color approach. I think you should keep both dresses somewhat simple so the photos turn out elegant looking and you don't clash.
the_dylaness Posted December 20, 2008 #6 Share Posted December 20, 2008 Ooh, another fun idea... If you are big into costume jewelry, what about buying an entire matching set but splitting up the pieces? (One with a necklace, the other with rings and an earring or whatever.) That would look cool.
smoothdancer Posted December 20, 2008 #7 Share Posted December 20, 2008 On a recent cruise our tablemates were two sisters. It was fun to watch them, and a lot of fun to see thier pictures. They did not coordinate their dresses as they lived in different parts of the USA and met up on the ship, but once on board they did make decisions as to what they would wear based on what the other was wearing. Thier colors were never the same and actually I think the best pictures were when they wore compatable but contrasting colors. One eveing one gal wore mint green, the other a midnight blue and the pictures they took had a real "pop" to them. I wuld say keep your colors in the same family on the color wheel, but experiment with contasting colors or extreme sides of the color wheel... I would love to see your final decisions. cb at sea Posted December 20, 2008 #8 Share Posted December 20, 2008 You don't have to "co-ordinate" your outfits! Wear what looks best on you! Even the length doesn't have to be the same!
