Travel To Be Free Posted September 16, 2009 #176 Share Posted September 16, 2009 What is it with the palms? Are you chasing an advertising dream-image? You may be setting yourself up for disappointment. Hey.... you got me!!! Thanks for the reality check. My DH and I have just cracked up over this!!! Have only been to Barbados once and did the caves... always heard the beaches were beautiful and could not be missed. The best ones I've been to have had a lot of palms, so I guess that's what I've been searching for. Guess I'll let that go and experience "Barbados." :) Thanks for all the info!! Aplmac Posted September 16, 2009 Author #179 Share Posted September 16, 2009 Nice Beach... ===> It's remote, with v.few amenitiesPlease Give me Directions......and possible Taxi Cost.... Bottom Bay is right over the other side of the island, about 14 twisty turny miles away.Taxi cost to get there to wait for you while you swim, tan, whatever and then bring you back is going to cost a bit (quantum unspecified) Pretty as it is, it's usually a bit too far for cruisers to access.. what with nearly-as-nice beaches more accessible It's out in the sticks, away from everything. There are a few guys there who rent chairs, but I didn't see any umbrellas. No food or drink -unless a local brings a cooler by, now and then but I'm not sure about that. 'Very few amenities' about sums it up. No taxis around to be hailed. He must either wait for you -or return at a pre-appointed time (and they're good about that, really) Now, if you were here for a week and rented your own car you could plan an entire day or two at BtmBay without the time constraints of a ship sailing at 1730 hrs. Can't help you with taxi cost sorry
The Big Booper Posted September 17, 2009 #180 Share Posted September 17, 2009 We hope to book the RCI Explorer for the holiday cruise which stops in Barbados on Boxing Day, Dec 26th. We have been to Barbodos once before on Dec 26th and nothing seemed to be open. I guess the best thing is to turn it into a beach day. What beach do you recommend on a holiday. The cheerleaders were quite nasty to you on the CB thread, totally uncalled for, including the clown who dissed your picture of the CB in the Barbados harbor, calling it a poorly composed shot. You meant for the CB to curl down and swing across the bay to the other ships tied up, right?
Norwaylin Posted September 17, 2009 #181 Share Posted September 17, 2009 Do they still do the Jolly Roger party boat tours in Barbados? That was one of the highlights of my cruise in 1997. I know they have these boats on other islands, but I plan to visit Barbados again with friends and want them to enjoy this party boat.
tourismmonkey246 Posted September 18, 2009 #182 Share Posted September 18, 2009 Aplmac, I also have a few questions for you. We will be in Barbados for the second time in November. The first time we did Silvermoon catamaran tour which was fantastic. However, we didn't actually get to see "the island" as we were on water all day. So, is there a map somewhere?? Can you give me any kind of general idea of the size of the island. Where and how far is doable in one day. We would like to visit a beach, probably Accra after seeing these photos, but don't want to spend a whole lot of time there. If you have Google Earth, the map is right there at your finger tips but as a satellite picture and not a drawing. Accra is very doable as it's about 15 - 20 minutes drive from the port (dependent on traffic). Another nice stop is Carlisle Bay, which you should be able to see across from the harbour. The island is not huge (21 miles long by 14 miles wide) but with one of the most dense road networks and one of the highest per capita car ratios in the world, it can take some time to get to the further areas like the North, East and South East Coasts. Would also like to visit some of the churches. We are from a strong catholic background, so we always love stopping at churches. Can you give me an idea of the island/ thanks As for churches, you'll find that Anglican churches take precedent here. You will still find very nice churches from other denominations as well! There's St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Cathedral (just across the street from Carlisle Bay), Sharon Moravian Church in the parish of St. Thomas (built in the year 1799), the St. James Parish Church (Anglican) which is next door to Folkestone Marine Park which can be a nice snorkeling stop and St. John's Parish Church (from it's grounds there's a wonderful view of the East Coast!) All of these areas will most likely not be seen on the same day as it is a bit too rambling but, if you were to settle on one of them, I could suggest areas of interest near to each one. If you need any other assistance, please feel free to ask.

Aplmac Posted October 6, 2009 Author #189 Share Posted October 6, 2009 Absolutely beautiful pictures! Thank you so much! ===> You're very welcome! How close is this to Accra? Let's see...the boardwalk runs from the Western end of Accraheading towards Hilton...the boardwalk is known to be 1.2 km which is about 3/4 mile or so. At the Western end of the boardwalk, it finishes at Hastings beach and the walk onwards to Hilton has gotta be about another mile maybe probably a bit more -all quite scenic --so all in all, I'd say it's about 2 miles? between Accra/Rockley and Hilton . ming Posted October 20, 2009 #194 Share Posted October 20, 2009 The fisheye is great, but this is what I admire: The smooth, graceful palm trunks framing the picture. A better one I haven't seen. First class composition. :)
