CruzinNoony Posted January 10, 2009 #1 Share Posted January 10, 2009 Can we expect to see whales in May or is it too early?:(
texasoceanwave Posted January 10, 2009 #2 Share Posted January 10, 2009 May 2003 in Skagway we went on a whale watching hunt and a whale circled our little charterd boat for thirty minutes. The whale acted like she was trained a SeaWorld . The whale blew water out of her spout, she did a jump with her tail in the air then down into the water again. We have this on tape. We also prayed for divine intervention to see a whale so ask Jesus for help and it will not be too early.
melodyina Posted January 10, 2009 #3 Share Posted January 10, 2009 You can check this link out for the Gray Whale migration. http://www.learner.org/jnorth/tm/gwhale/MigrationRoute_Map.html This is a great link which shows (from human spotters) where the whales are on their migration path. Not sure where your itinierary will take you, but gray is exciting as their 'blow' is in the form of a heart.
Yukon Posted January 10, 2009 #4 Share Posted January 10, 2009 It's humpbacks we see in Juneau, though.
Marie321 Posted January 10, 2009 #5 Share Posted January 10, 2009 We were in Alaska the last week in May last year. We saw several whales in the open sea, but it was too early to see very many on whale watching excursions. We went another year in July and saw a very large number. knorrisb07 Posted January 10, 2009 #6 Share Posted January 10, 2009 Humpback will be back to Alaska in May. Either take a tour in Juneau or spend time looking out from the ship. Bring your binoculars.
jens0124 Posted January 10, 2009 #7 Share Posted January 10, 2009 We were in Alaska last year in late May and we saw a lot of whales both on a whale watching tour and also from our ship. We also saw an Orca in Glacier Bay but it was very far off so we weren't able to get pictures. We were able to get some very good pictures on the whale watching tour. Coffeequeenj Posted January 10, 2009 #8 Share Posted January 10, 2009 We saw both Humpbacks and Orcas in May. Have fun.
Budget Queen Posted January 10, 2009 #9 Share Posted January 10, 2009 Humpbacks are FULLY viewable the entire Alaska cruise season. 100% sightings on whale watches. There is some continued late migrating into May, seeing them maybe the third week. This would be on round trip Seattle sailings. Orcas are PURE chance to see with no tours for them in Alaska. Tours are available for the resident pods out of Vancouver Island. You do NOT see grays, since they have migrated in April to the Bering Sea and do not migrate to inside passage. Residents are seen Newport area of Oregon, if you want to see some.
melodyina Posted January 10, 2009 #10 Share Posted January 10, 2009 I'm not sure where the original posters cruise destination will be, but if you are in Seward, you will find that the gray whale watch excursions will still be available in May. Also they are heavily advertised on TV and newspaper, beginning in April in Anchorage along with specials, check the websights. Renown already has their adversiting on-line for $69 and a 4 hour tour. http://www.renowntours.com/gray-whale-watching.htm I've taken this tour on two separate years. I prefer the May dates, as you wil see more shorebird migration if you are into bird watching.
