Dry Dock?

Where is information available for what is being done on the S ships in dry dock?? It must be quite extensive and I am wondering how it will change our favorite ships!

Here's some info for you about what will be done on the four "S" (Statendam, Maasdam, Ryndam & Veendam) and one "R" class (Rotterdam) ships

Over the next two years, Statendam, Maasdam, Ryndam, Veendam and Rotterdam are scheduled for month-long dry docks that will add a bunch of new amenities and facilities. Among them will be The Retreat, a resort-style pool area aft on Lido deck.

The Retreat’s pool will be divided into three main sections separated by low, curving walls running the length of the pool. The middle section is 16 inches deep so guests can sit on built-in benches in the water. The two side sections will feature 44 lounge chairs set in 8 inches of water. At the aft end of the pool will be a hot tub.

Slice pizzeria, which debuted on Eurodam, will be in the pool area with tables and chairs under a sunscreen. A stage will be located near the pool for live music performances, and an LED screen and sound system will provide movies and video to The Retreat.

This $200 million phase of the Signature of Excellence program brings the latest innovations at sea to Holland America’s S-class ships and Rotterdam. The first of the extensive dry dock periods begins with Veendam in spring 2009 and the last will be completed on Maasdam in early 2011.

While in dry dock, the ships’ aft deck will be expanded to create The Retreat and a new bar concept called Mix. All existing staterooms will be upgraded and new staterooms will be added. The ships also will have new lanai staterooms that open on to Lower Promenade Deck’s exterior teak deck. Spa staterooms near the Greenhouse Spa and Salon will have special amenities.

Holland America Line has committed $525 million to the Signature of Excellence program

Maybe I'm warped (don't answer that), but I find it interesting that Veendam is the first to get the new fancy Retreat aft-pool resort area, then they send her to Alaska all spring/summer. Who's going to sit in 8 or 16 inches of water in a deck chair there?:p

I thought of that myself a couple of months and just shook my head.

I will sit in the pool on the Veendam in late June. I may be wearing earmuffs and toting a cocktail, but I will be there! In Alaska, it should be a nice view. I hope someone stops by and chips the ice away from my feet so I can get a refill!:D

Be sure to get Hot Chocolate laced with something good -- and get one of those lovely plaid wool blankets to cover up with!!

Enjoy!!

We were on the Amsterdam in Alaska the second week of September 2007. We were in the aft pool and soaking up some sun when we left both Sitka and Ketchikan - it was in the low 70's. Juneau was in the 50's and Glacier Bay in the high 30's. You never know. :)

I am very confused re the drydock info from HAL.

All articles discuss the five ships, but never is the Oosterdam mentioned.

Drydock schedule for it is beginning of April for the month. Deck plan changes are noted (ie with the change effective post Apr 24)

So what is going to be new on the O?? And will the drydock be completed on time?

Talk is of the aft lift, but I haven't seen this confirmed by HAL anywhere.

p.s I have swam in heated pool in Alaska at the end of Sept (Mercury). It was wonderful, even laid out on deck!

Lemmie try to 'splain;): The dry-dock described above (the addition of the 'Retreat' and the conversion of the present Piano and Casino bars into the 'Mix', the conversion to Lanai rooms on the LP deck, the upgrade of staterooms, etc. etc. is only taking place on the five ships mentioned: All of the 'S' class vessels; Statendam, Maasdam, Ryndam and Veendam and one out of the four 'R' class vessels; Rotterdam. It does, as of today, not involve the other three 'R' class vessels; Zaandam, Volendam & Amsterdam, nor Prinsendam (in a class all by herself), nor the four Vista's; Zuiderdam, Oosterdam, Westerdam and Noordam.

In April, Oosterdam will receive her 'regular' drydock period just like any ship in the fleet. Two years ago, she received a new Azipod that is different (a little smaller) than the 'sick' one which was replaced at the time up in Esquimalt, BC. I heard a while back that the original 'sick' one, since repaired will be put back in place. Not 100% sure of this but I believe she'll be receiving the same 'butt job' that Westerdam received in 2007 plus some of the renovations (Ocean Bar config - Exploration Cafe on starboard side of the Crow's Nest, etc. etc.) that Noordam came out with when she was newly delivered (different at the time than her three sisters).

There are a great many things the crew does just before and during a 'regularly scheduled' dry dock. These are the things they cannot do in normal operation without disturbing the passengers:

1. Clean and renovate all the sun loungers.

2. Deep-clean cabins and public areas.

3. Empty, clean, and re-stock all the minibars.

4. Shampoo all the carpets.

5. Replace worn carpets.

6. Touch up interior paint.

7. Re-paint exterior.

8. Repair the thousands of little things broken in normal operation.

9. Repaint / re-tile Galley floors.

10. Renovate / replace Galley equipment.

11. Install new cables and pipes for new equipment.

12. Clean up all the mess made by the contractors onboard.

13. Feed and care for the 100s or 1000s of contractors living onboard during the dry dock.

14. Wrap every interior area in plastic to avoid damage from contractors.

15. Repair, clean, upgrade crew areas.

16. Stand fire watch.

17. Carry garbage and debris off the ship every hour.

18. Clean and inventory all items in hundreds of storage lockers.

19. Clean, repaint, and repair swimming pools and jacuzzis.

20. Renovate teak decks.

21. Re-upholster, repair and/or replace worn furniture in public rooms and staterooms.

22. Replenish supplies of china, glassware, cutlery, bed linens and towels.

23. Update/replace shipboard computer systems.

24. Repair/upgrade/maintain all shipboard mechanical/propulsion systems.

25. Clean/maintain all ballast tanks.

26. Clean, strip and repaint the hull below the waterline

10-2 John. Thank you for the explanation, have been going crazy trying to find out if this was the same dry dock the "5" were getting.

Must throw in a can of W-D-40 incase they reuse that old azipod. I don't want this ship limping thru the Greek Islands. This is my first time with HAL and slightly nervous.:p

p.s love the pooch, is he still working or retired?
